When I have the map but no compass, I use the map for find which direction I want to go, not which direction is "North". I don't understand how rotating it randomly would change this. Already I will check the map to see my direction of travel and realign myself to get to where I need to go. It seems weird that the character would hold the map differently each time.

So if you drew a map like the one we have while knowing where north is and knew where you were on the map, you're saying you wouldn't know where north is? I think I get what you're trying to accomplish, but with the way the mapping works (instantly while moving, drawing down distinct building features), there would be no reason not to know.
It could be made into an actual map, as in it doesn't have a pointer for where you are on it. You can easily figure which way is north in real life from looking at the sun over the day, the tricky bit is knowing where on the map you are if you can't see any landmarks.
Yeah that sounds frustrating enough 🙂 And when you get the compass, then the map works as normal.
