Hello Ente Team,

I am an Ente user. I use both Ente Photos and the Ente Auth app.

Recently, I accidentally downloaded a malicious APK on my phone. Due to this issue, I was unable to remove the app and had to perform a factory reset on my device.

After resetting my phone, I tried to log in to my Ente account. I successfully entered my email and received the OTP via email. However, I am now being asked for a 2FA code, and unfortunately, I no longer have access to my 2FA codes or recovery keys.

This Ente account is linked to several important accounts, and I am currently unable to access it. I kindly request your assistance in recovering my account.

I already Mail Regarding this. Please help me. 🙏😭

If you have lost access to both your 2FA codes and your recovery key, Ente cannot recover your account or your data. This is due to Ente's end-to-end encrypted architecture; for your privacy and security, only you have the keys to your data, and Ente support cannot provide or regenerate your recovery key or bypass 2FA.

What you can do:
Since you have already emailed support, you have taken the correct step. While they cannot restore your access or recover your encrypted data, they can assist you with account ownership verification for the purpose of account deletion. This would allow you to eventually create a new account using the same email address.

For the future:
To prevent this from happening again, it is recommended to:

  • Save your recovery key: Store it in a safe place, such as writing it down on paper or saving it in a separate password manager.
  • Set up Passkeys: These serve as a modern alternative to traditional 2FA codes, allowing authentication using biometric data or hardware security keys (https://ente.io/help/photos/features/passkeys).
  • Enable Legacy (Emergency Contacts): This feature allows you to designate trusted contacts who can help recover your account (https://ente.io/help/photos/features/legacy).

For more details on why the recovery key is critical, you can visit Ente's help page: https://ente.io/help/auth/faq/enteception.
