the guy did so much for OW esports, there's even a tribute to him in... Kings Row I believe?
there is?
eichenwalde, makes sense
there's an I โค D H on the poster
initials for Dennis Hawelka his real name
I love everything about the Overwatch league implementation in game except the token prices. Would expect $1-$3 per skin, but $5?
Gonna be a common complaint I'm aware. But sitll really cool how well it is laid out and seperated!
i dont know , doesnt seem too bad
it's in like with other games I think
i found okey-ish, since is pure cosmetic
I mean, people were complaining about lootboxes all year, for one OW has skins you can buy
it's purely cosmetic and not all of them look great so you dont need to buy entire sets unless you're feeling generous
exactly
also, there will be ways to earn tokens without paying for them
your fav hero you play, your favorite OWL player, your fav team etc
just my most played heroes
or just ones that lok good
i would be angry if they go like Battlefront
Yeah I love the LA Glad skins because they look amazing so I might get one or two of those one day.
why would they do that when they havent been doin it!
but since is cosmetic and also no trading a ala CSGO/TF2
same
Same
tbh
i hate to say it but im following 11 teams
For me are Seoul, NYXL and Outlaws
i wanted to get the junkrat fuel skin
A bit of NYXL too
Criiinge https://clips.twitch.tv/SlipperyAmorphousFungusFUNgineer?tt_medium=clips_api&tt_content=url
I really enjoyed watching outlaws play during the preseason vs fuel
a bit of Uprising for me
Uprising for the underdog story
but in memory of internethulk i'll get the winston fuel skin
everyone should get the winston fuel skin
damn those OWL skins are even more expensive to buy than i thought
@idle beacon people will think you support their current winston though, who is... a very different character from Hulk
people will get the fuel winston skin for xqc LUL
ah damn it
^
i like the razer โข outlaws
mayhem and shanghai similarities def doesnt do them any favors when considering they're one of the less popular teams
that underperformed in preseason too
also, i was kinda expecting the away colours tho
like, if you buy McCree Outlaws you get the aways one.
maybe some day in the future
away colors are pretty boring tho
so what skin should i get?
and i get it gets really cluttered if you get like 600 new skins
dynasty ana the only true choice
Gengu Outlaws
i aint into dynasty
@idle beacon reinhardt, big german dude
is overwatch still popular in China? Heard Pubg is smashing OW
or just get Winston if that's what you want
and reports of dwindling playtimes, not looking good for china
thinkin about junkrat or monkey, ye
i bet he's not half as good as i am .. as junkrat
he was the insane genji in the first online matches, right?
im gonna have mixed reactions facing a fuel junkrat player
or was he the insane widow?
i love seagull but i hate hate junkrat
seagull is famous for his Genji and Hanzo, yes
all projectile heroes
pharah, junkrat, a bit of zarya
seagull known for genji back in the day in pro level, then dropped off a bit. His hanzo is mainly for ladder. Current pro player we see him use pharah junk and zarya
who was that insane widow in seagull's team .. which picked off tons of enemies on hollywood?
funny guy tho
don't diss gods
nobody calls himself gods .. unless he's compensating something or is a plain bigmouth ๐
gods was disgusting widow tho
reaver disappeared?
ever since the widow nerf, he could never compete at the same level
wht
people say Widowmaker feels like a completely different heroe at lan
who disappeared
Who's Spitfire's biggest rival?
Reaver
Seoul
Ok
ah ok
that's why you see her in OWL way more than in ladder
I'll get McCree Seoul
@latent hull .. prolly because the ping difference?
O0
You hate spitfire ?
@silk linden
seoul skins all look ๐
๐ค
@abstract kernel nah .. is an awesome song by The Prodigy
I'm gna support spitfire cause birdring and rascal too goddamn cute
well, spitfire have fuckall to do with england
Also they are a top contender for the title so .
They're english
they can't even speak english
spitfire was an english plane back in ww2
I need to be as anti-english w/o being offensive
i'd support london cuz their players and color scheme are sick
wat
supporting Spitfire is being anti-english tbh
I'm gna support spitfire cause birdring and rascal too goddamn cute
london has a lot of unusually cute players
i am supporting fuel because the most players of fuel have been with the INTERNETHULK
no homo
Houston has the handsomest gamers
they're like babies that'll kick your ass in ow
referring to profit birdring and rascal
I'm doing either Seoul or Outlaw for McCrree
beemoo .. they'd shit bricks if i'd be at the lan .. and thus, lose
Maybe outlaw just for logo
fuckit i'll put fissure and whooyall in the qt section
they've already proven themselves on lan tho
Excelsior widow looks like the spider from spiderman
MODS .. pls remove @digital blade
that's a good reason to get it
lmao
lol
gonna report this lil bumblebee hater
bumblebees are cute
Or should I call her ... puts on sunglasses Spiderwoman?
Gladiators look like discount null sector
Dallas colours remind me of guardian equipment from Zelda BotW
I refer the spider that bites the guy

๐ค
lol ๐
Excelsior logo looks like Scotland flag
Yea, I'm gonna get Outlaw McCree for the logo and colours
nice and black
I want to rep Philly but I also want colors that don't suck. RIP
Mei looks so good in black and gold ;_;
i like the philly players, i dont mind the city of philly, but comcast... argh
i cant support comcast
is there a list of who supports what?
like the companies that invested?
perfect, thanks!
Dynasty discord!!!!! YUSSS
in terms of color palette, dynasty def got it more unique with the gold grey/black
you can still get em without buying, dont know how yet tho
" They stated multiple months in advance that those wouldn't be available to farm in game, only available via currency to fuel the league and the teams. "
oh, possibly something with Twitch. I'm just gonna stop worrying lol
gfy dude bought spider widow first
https://gfycat.com/DisastrousKnobbyFrenchbulldog
It costs...
$100 to get all the skins for a team
wh
what the fuck
I mean, I know that the entirety of the OWL is a cashgrab and not actually a competitive scene
but what the fuck

Yeah dynasty has a great color scheme
I was actually excited to get into esports for the first time ever, but not a single player has Mei as a signature hero, and both New York and Philly teams have 0 US natives (as far as I can see)
Yeah, Blizzard is treating the OW eSport scene like a monopoly akin to US Football. Which sucks for everybody overall
But I wouldn't imagine that they would seriously charge this much for skins out of all things
For people looking forward to it, great. I for one have no interest and hate that Blizzard has completely abandoned a huge percentage of their player base because OWL is all that matters to them. No updates, no communication, but they have plenty of time shoving OWL down our throats. Hopefully after the launch things will get better, but I will not be supporting OWL as it has hurt the game for most players. Edit: This post is not condemning people for watching it. I'm just posting my decision to not watch it and why I think we would be better off without it unless Blizzard decides to treat all player base the same.
what a joke
$5 per skin isn't terrible if you only want one or two
lol
$5 per skin is awful when CS:GO gives you more content for less... and they have more overhead cost compared to Overwatch
The in-game implementation is a fantastic start, but I can think of quite a few features they could add.
Are we going to be able to watch live in-game? Not spectator, but like the MLG stream?
Blizzard is just using it as a cashgrab
blaming OWL on lack of balance updates.... yeah like OWL doesnt depend on balance updates
lol
The fact that you have to buy in to get in to OWL kind of proves that it's not an actual competitive scene
But like $100 per team????
they're just skins dont worry bout it
I would not worry about it if Blizzard would actually release more basic color skins for each hero
all recolors, just buy like a few of them
And most characters don't even have orange colored skins
season 2 we might see more!
I'm getting Fusion skins purely because Blizzard doesn't have orange skins for the most part
imagine s2 another 12 teams
They are gonna release more base skins for regular lootboxes soon
that's another 312 skins
"Soon"
5 years later
smh
OWL is already a failure since it's a cashgrab and nothing more. But I'm just bugged out that they would charge this much per skin
lol symmetra
owl isn't a failure
ok
not yet!
Have some faith boyo
OWL is a failure in its entirety. Any eSport scene that has a couple of million of $ to buy in undermines the entire competitive scene
Sorry, but from a conceptual standpoint it's a cashgrab.
Not a competitive eSport scene.
oh its def some sort of money maker plan but it could be competitive
Could != is
Currently it is not competitive.
they're trying to emulate real sports
Fun fact: It's cheaper to buy 26 $4.99 100 token packages than buying 1 $99.99 2600 token
and real sports are just as if not more cash grab than this
Because it makes very little self sustainability Cappa
CS:GO can run for years making far larger profits with far lower overhead cost compared to OW
not one bit
It's failed to get interest from most people
Guys what is the best overwatch league team?
lol
OW isnt even in the top 3-4 esports rightnow
And yet they charge more than any other eSport to support teams
Seoul Dynasty
$1 for a sticker
OWL just lauched, first offical game hasn't even played yet. This is just setting the foundation for the sport. Things will change as time progresses.
but it was random (and tradeable)
So at most it's like $20-$30 to support a team with every single weapon
AND they actually do something else by giving you tokens/badges based on whether or not your team wins that you can display
AND you can get more $$$ per sticker since there's a community trading
It costs more to support an OW team with a single skin than it does to get the entire meta weapons in CS:GO with team stickers.
think of it as a jersey, you only show off the one you wear
Dude
so buying just your favorite hero is enough
to show support
heck i wont even spending a dime
but i'll watch OWL
I don't give a shit about the teams in OW. And I won't watch any of the matches because they're not enjoyable. I'm just pissed that the only good thing from OWL is a massive 'fuck you'
Why are you even here then
^
Go whine in overwatch discussion
Because the OWL skins are a matter of eSports
They wouldn't need to be so expensive if Blizzard didn't charge millions for each team to buy in to the scene
dude why are you even in this chat if all you want to do is bitch and whine
@gentle jetty for the same reason why Tigole Bitties Jeff Kaplan did in Everquest.
lul tigole my main man
Why are you interested in the skins if you don't care about the teams
Equip a legendary or something
Because I'm criticizing the system?
youre being a dick
Sure
Why do you care how good or bad the system is if you said you don't like OW esports
I do already though. A lot of the stuff I suggested for Bastion, Orisa, and Mercy seems to have gone through to some degree
there's a pretty big reddit thread on the high price of OWL skins right now
big reddit threads usually get blizz's attention
Pls don't get baited guys
always for sile
Blizzard is greedy and charges millions for a team to buy in
Teams have to get a lot of cash to make up for the buy in
Skins are sold at a huge rate to make up for Blizzard's greed
The average person can't afford to spend so much to suport teams and thus opts to not do so
Support for the teams is lower than they would be otherwise
its funny how people think its gonna fail even when it hasnt even started
the skins are very expensive
Depends on the definition of failing my dude. OWL will make loads of cash. But it won't make a good competitive scene. That's the difference
thats a problem
why are you just assuming the average dude wants to buy every skin?
I am not.
many of your points are flawed
now teams who had the money bought in with their rosters
It costs me more to get 6 hero skins for Overwatch than it does for me to get a sticker in CS:GO for every single weapon in the game.
Consider that
@silk linden
but soon the teams will start to bring in talent from contenders who really deserve a spot there
The average dude won't buy anything. The overwhelming majority may buy 10 skins in the OWL lifetime.
Just enjoy the show and quit worrying so much
Blizzard is greedy and charges millions for a team to buy in
nah, they charged the right amount
The average person can't afford to spend so much to suport teams and thus opts to not do so
this is what you think, I don't think it's gonna go that way, especially with how games and skins have worked in the past
lets just enjoy the game and stop shittttting on it
I sure as heck would hope that the average dude wouldn't spend $5 for a single skin in OWL.
Right, the buy-in was likely needed to get the league started, but in the future people can prove them selves through contenders and become pro without a buy-in
No other competitive game has ever had a buy in to get the scene started
cough LCS
And definitely not millions of dollars
Such as? I don't remember CS:GO or DOTA having millions for a buy in
people shtting on OWL before it even starts, as if there's only one way to do the esport business right, a scene which is still in its infancy
Gladly
theyre trying to make it like an actual sport, and sports teams are expensive as shit so millions isnt much
why cant people just allow something to grow
Give me a $20 million buy in and I'll give you an entire competitive scene ;)
Who the hell are you? I ain't giving you anything. You'd have to prove your worth sile
youre just saying random stuff now
its way more than just giving you money
lmao
it is far more complicated than you think
dude nobodys taking you seriously, theres no point in arguing
thats why i like Rocket League esports its more niche no haters just people who love the game
@solar trout won't say I'm anyone right now. I'm just a guy with massive interest into game design and development going to college for game design and development who aspires to work for Blizzard as a lead designer on a game that would fulfill the niche that Blizzard attempted with Titan for a First Person Shooter MMO.
A lofty goal, but a goal
what
But regardless, $5 for a skin is absurd
where in the fuck did that come from
theyll change that eventually
is that a copy pasta
Blizzard is a company that learns from their mistakes
I would argue the opposite
if you seem to hate blizzard so much for being greedy, then why do you want to work for them? or is it just that you arent getting anything from the owl and your dream job and you want to find something to whine about?
they really dont give up
I've wanted to work for Blizzard since I was a child playing WarCraft 2 on a Playstation back in Brasil. For what I aspire to create, they are the only company that would fullfil the things I want to do aside from Kojima's production.
Please go talk about your not-esport related dreams elsewhere
Are you saying that what OWL runs on to support itself is not eSport related?
you guys dont see they point of investing
like friking robert kraft bought into the league
the kroenoke family did 2
I thought $5 per 100 is pretty decent
Overwatch League kicks off tomorrow in the Blizzard Arena in Burbank, CA with a trio of matches starting at 7 pm Eastern. Blizzard will broadcast the leagueโs games via both Twitch and Major League Gaming. Preseason matches only broadcasted on MLG, which had the dubious benefit of no available viewership statistics. Now that the debut season will be on Twitch as well, weโll get a sense of whoโs actually watching. In-person tickets for the first day of the season sold out last Sunday, but the entire rest of the season still has seats available.
as people continue to support the fact that skins have no imapct on the game
please just go there to whine, i came here to ask about what skins everyone was going to get and you decided to whine about a company that doesnt care about what one dude says, if the majority doesnt say it, nobody at blizzard is going to listen
@fluid sail actually thanks for that
@hollow egret South Korea does have a team - they might expand matches there eventually as well. Also there are a number of good Korean players on other OWL teams...should be interesting to watch! The above article has a good rundown of each team and the league.
@fluid sail ik that
@sullen berry No problem - saw some cool info in there I thought I'd share. ๐
ive read up on my facts lol
more seoul teams you might imagine
a busan team for OWL would be cool
Oh yeah, that'd be cool for next season!
also a chicago/millwaukee team is almost confirmed
the investor was interested in buying in OWL but they werent able too get a 14th team in so they dropped it
I'm intersted to see how the OWL expands in the years after this inaugural season...I'm hoping it goes well as I'd like to see some Canadian teams in there to root for (and not just Canadian players) lol
I'd be fine with that, just as long as it's not Toronto or Montreal, haha...although even then I'd have to support em
West is Best!
lol
:p lol
if theres another california team imma flip
I'm not using the free coin just yet
I'm waiting to decide which team I want to root for before I pick a skin
I'm still mad that nobody has a signature Mei
I should be in OWL just to be s ignature Mei, gnome sane?
if only to encourage and buy an international team I can closely relate to
international marketing for the league hasn't sans asia in Korea/China and UK in the EU
because that would definitely be an exciting roundup of new teams
There'll be a signature Mei when Mei is worthwhile enough to have a signature player.
Seuoul Dynasty is gonna be the team to beat this season methinks
This is weird though...."The Spitfire epitomizes the ridiculousness of Overwatch Leagueโs location-based branding, with owners based in California, a team name that claims to be from London, and a roster comprised entirely of South Korean players."
yeah and Philly literally has no players from Philly
fuel best na
arent many western teams with actual players that come from the same state let alone cccity
arent many western teams with actual players that come from the same state let alone cccity
Gotta get that cashgrab american audience amirite
Blizzard fucked over their goddamn Teams
No one is gonna be crazy enough to spend that much money for each skin
Gotta make up for that multimillion buy in somehow :))))))
people will complains if the skin is like 2.5 dollar nevertheless.
the objective of the update is to support your favourite team
and they're making us spend 5 dollars for each separate one
i really think the conclusion is that Blizz is just retarded
It's a cashgrab, all there is to it.
eh............
5 dollars for a Team's set of skins
HECK YEAH
BUY IT
5 dollars foe
EACH SKINS
fuck you blizzard
5 dollars for a team's set of skin is fucking robbery
it's the best price availiable
those skins didn't just fucking materializing from thin air, mate
thinking that 5 dollars per skin is fine is just dumb
Blizzard knows that the scene is not sustainable, they're trying to make as much as possible while the gullible people with no knowledge about eSports are still dumb enough to fall for it
๐
fuck blizz
question: you know the cost of making the skin?
Yeah
Should be absolutely no more than 1 hour for the base, and then 2 minutes for each of the team recolors
Unless they don't know about RGB levels
which would be sad
you pay 5 dollars to get 3 months worth of content in dota 2 and still support the teams
in overwatch you pay 5 dollars for a skin
you're getting me?
Valve is actually smart
blizz isn't
................i don't think the comparison actually sticks
why not
but I doubt anything I say will disassuade you otherwise so I'll bow out.
explain it to us clever rich boy
yeah but hear this:
dota sucks
OW is good
It would take me, someone with only basic knowledge of texturing/mapping, no more than 5 days to make all of these Overwatch skins
At least 90% of dota 2 heroes are viable in Tournaments
Right Overwatch balancing team
LUL
:LUL:
It's just a cashgrab, which is a shame. It's already hard enough to make any Arena Shooter interesting to watch. For them to pull this kind of bull is just really sad
Blizz did a great job at the skins
I respect the way they made competitve play much clearer for the viewers
but this is just retarded
Exactly
I swear
If Blizz made each Team's set of skins the 100 tokens price right now
the teams would be getting a shitton of money
but guess not
I would've gladly spent $20 for all of the skins for a team. But I will NOT spend $20 for just 4 skins. Blizzard is getting no money from me right now.
Continue not throwing money at Blizz until they wake the fuck up
you're doing god's work
Woot
Fixwed
woot woot
And even in games like CS and DOTA you can generally get something back from the skins that would make even more money. You can't even do that with OW
So the $5 per skin is even more absurd than that already is
True as fuck
You support the Devs
Make money back
support the teams
make money back
everyone wins
@silk linden ๐๐ป SPORTS!
Yeah, but the technology for a market system in a Blizzard game just isn't there yet
You think you know that you want a fair and balanced eSport economy, but you don't want a fair and balanced eSport economy
I'll tell you what, if esports want to emulate sports, they got the know-it-all bs spewing "fans" part down
Yeah, you even have the people who are willing to support a blatant cashgrab monopoly
;)
Are you going to buy your team branded cheesehat too?
i'm gonna buy my branded orisa cheesehat
FOR FREE
and then wait for blizzard world
see you in 2 months LUL
Yeah!
i heard cheesehats?
I was originally hopping to get like 7 or so skins from SFS since there's not really that many orange skins in Overwatch, but I guess I'll just have to settle for one this season. Oh well
i mean one skin is fine
You don't even get a discount for buying the larger package. Even IRL sports give that option
It's actually cheaper to buy more of the $4.99 deals than one of the $99.99
at least there not technically forcing you to buy them
Orange skins give you a low-visibility advantage on Route 66
i mean their just skins anyway
It's my guess that an Overwatch League skin will cost somewhere between $3-$5. Meaning if you want to kit out every hero in your favorite team's skin it'll cost about $75-$130 to do so - excluding promotions.
Anything less probably wont be financially beneficial to the League.
To be fair, there is no world where people are happy with the price of these skins without Blizzard basically giving them away.
Blizzard has always been great at pricing things at the higher side of "fair." Which is what a competent business should look to do. https://t.co/LtwxUCByBo
Blizzard already made 24 million from the buy ins from each team. So I'm really interested on whether or not this hurts Blizzard more or the teams more
The new skins look amazing!
it probably doesn't hurt anybody
I'd think any proceeds from skins would be considered "icing on the cake"
but what do I know?
so what?
the proceeds from each skin got to a shared pool
I'd hope any team looking to get a signifigant amount of money out of that would think otherwise
Sile you need to chill dawg
makin this way big of a deal than it should be
@full grail ๐๐ป
referring to the $5 OWL skins
The tournament teams aren't gonna get any money from these skins and it is right to judge them
Hey soy, Sydney Sunburns when
2 bad OWL sucks
blizz is fucking over OWL
@sullen berry
would it be melbourne or sydney?
how did they actually select the players for each team?
Decided by the GM/Coaches
Teams had to buy in. Companies buy out players
So whoever was the one with an organization that was willing to pay cash to get both a team and a spot
General Manager
oooooooooooooh
say so
coaches? .. what coaches?
who decides who's gonna be a coach?
so many questions about ow's skill level
I think most teams started with a General Manager who had experience/an idea of the scene. They went off and contacted people they were interested in as players/coaches.
i mean yea ok .. i've been a coach myself .. 7yrs ago .. right before i've stopped with esports. but .. yea. who decides who is a coach for such a big organized league?
Some coaches have been coaches of successful teams before, came from other esports or are older players who are transitioning into a coaching role.
coaches of coaches of coaches
A lot of the teams have multiple coaches.
idk how they decided specifically, that's probably why I am not a General Manager for an OWL team ๐
if you wanna buy a pet, you go into a zoo store. if you want to buy a zoo store, you go into a zoo-store-store .. .and if you wanna buy a zoo-store-store .. you ain't brain healthy anymore (little britain)
Healthy body healthy
my last location
as coach
was speedlink
freakin women
holdin you off of precious esports time -.-
The name's patches o'houlihan, im your new coach

I'm the new coach. I'll take in whichever team can give me the biggest bonus. :)
what teams are u guys hyping
20 millions buy in aren't for shit, mate
why do people think that those buy ins are immediate profit is beyond me
it is work as capital for the league
Hope either outlaws or fuel win
@grizzled mulch there is literally nothing Blizzard is doing that could in any way cost $240 million dollars for OWL
you sure?
you have the data to back it up or it is just your immediate kneejerk reaction?
It doesn't cost Valve that much to run 2 majors a year
There is nothing Blizzard could be doing that costs that much for a single season
you missed the point.
the 20 millions buy ins are capital for the league in the long run
it is not the cost for this season
it is never was.
and never will be.
you missed the point
reasonable options for people to support the scene provide capital for both teams and developers
If you want to support corporate greed and bad customer practices go right ahead. I will give Blizzard no credit if they want to shaft over the viability of their competitive scene just so they can make 240 mil
the problem is that Valve's "reasonable options" are acting as an absent dad for whole year except 2 majors
and CSGO scene has quite a gripe with that
and you have to realized that 20 millions buy ins is again, not for profit
CS:GO's scene does't have a gripe with that at all. In fact that's generally supported as being the better option compared to DOTA 2
Take your bullshit lies to /r/overwatchciclejerk
(Chants) Dallas Fuel, Dallas Fuel!!
what do you mean? People shitting all over their current Eleague major with the way they ran the qualifier
and also their lack of change despite the 2 majors system being inadequate
Whatโs going on?
They are shitting on ELeague because they brought in more teams from areas with smaller competitive scenes
nothing to do with them being greedy
Please, stop lying
...
How so? You have yet to provide a single reason why they are not good with their scene
DOTA has a far worse competitive scene than CS:GO, so I have no clue why you're bringing in the best example of a competitive eSport scene as an argument at all
DOTA2 scene is good, sure
but the CSGO scene is kind of all over the place because Valve acting as an absentee dad
except for 2 majors
DOTA2 they got Valve's control because LoL eSports is a thing
The CS:GO scene is all over the place because player peformance varies a lot over the span of a year and many teams are currently going through a huge change of players
NOT
Valve's issues
Stop lying, please.
it is all over the place with the organizations.
or the lack of it
with third party tournaments doing their own things with barely any coordination
which had caused problem before with teams dropping out of events due to majors being announced late.
and for the most part Valve's involvement is minimal because they are getting money from third party TOs
That's a problem with the scene being extremely self sufficient more than anything else. You are arguing that a self-sustainable competitive scene is somehow a worse competitive scene.
it is not self sustainable when people are shitting on its prestigeous event
[Citation required]
I could say the same to your claims.
The only people who whine about the majors are morons who don't understand why DOTA's scene is awful.
but either way, you have to realize there's a significant difference between how Valve and Blizzard are running their own scene, and you can't just say "but Valve did it, then why can't Blizzard".
having a single-important-major-monopoly is damaging for the long term sustainability of a scene as it puts too much emphasis on a single event. This undermines the ability of upcoming and upstarting players and teams from being able to play at majors
Yeah, the major difference is that Valve runs events on competitive scenes, whereas Blizzard runs monopolies on cashgrabs
That's the difference
......
And yes, you can say "Valve did it, so why can't Blizzard". Just because you don't like what the answer is doesn't mean the question isn't valid.
Blizzard modelled their league on real life sports league, and running that requires a significantly different requirement
rather than Valve's majors mode
That's called shitty design and a cashgrab.
which again, answered your question.
"Blizzard running a cashgrab is fine because they chose to run a cashgrab" is your argument here dude.
that's only because your emotion is accusing it of being a cashgrab
Maybe it's because I'm not someone who bends ass over backwards for the system that real life sports run on.
Haven't watched real life sports in years, and I sure as fuck won't watch OWL if it runs off of the same anti-consumerist practices.
If Blizzard chooses to model their game after a monopoly in hopes of creating something other than a monopoly that's their choice. I won't support it.
your emotion is clouding your judgment on this.
My emotion here is the same emotion that I have over sports for years.
But by all means, I am still waiting for your argument that isn't "Blizzard running a cashgrab is fine because they chose to run a cashgrab"
What justification is there for Blizzard to run the system this way that isn't them just trying to use it to get as much money as quickly as possible with very little self-sustainability on its scene? Please, answer me this.
i mean, you are very headstrong in your opinion in what OWL is doing is a cash grab
so what exactly can I say now?
Hopefully an actual argument.
nah, an argument won't help because you will be just accusing everything as "defending the cashgrab"
the immediate one or two years of the league is irrelevant to the grand scope of things
which people like Immortals owner had gone on length about
the 20 millions buy ins again, aren't a cash grab. It is not for the immediate profit of the league. It is never is.
I will bet you $10000 in contract that Blizzard will pull a buy in for next OWL. Want to make a bet?
And also:
"What justification is there for Blizzard to run the system this way that isn't them just trying to use it to get as much money as quickly as possible with very little self-sustainability on its scene? Please, answer me this."
Now you're just being obtuse
Do they have to rename it for you to consider it a different event?
this is only the first season of their league, what do you mean "pull a buy in for next OWL"?
the league has said it will expand in future seasons
The next season of OWL then if you need me to spell out the basics
Dude, come on. Don't be so obtuse
i mean, you said you wanted to bet 10000 in contract that Blizzard will pull a "buy in" for the next OWL
and Blizzard has said they wanted to expand for the next season after this
so your bet fell kind of flat there.
and OWL is not an event, geezus
Okay, so your answer is that you aren't willing to put your money where your mouth is. Gotcha
Anyways
What justification is there for Blizzard to run the system this way that isn't them just trying to use it to get as much money as quickly as possible with very little self-sustainability on its scene? Please, answer me this.
uh......"little self sustainability"?
what?
Immortal owner literally spell out that they are more concerning about long term growth of the league
and so is every other owners of the team in the league
if they weren't aiming for "sustainbility", they wouldn't set up OW Contenders as a venue for up and coming talents
in 7 regions
they also spell out that the first season is a feeler season too
you need to look past the cash grab angle, dude
it is clouding your judgement
The owners are worried because Overwatch doesn't have a competitive scene to keep up and coming people around too well. Unless Blizzard is going to invest in creating minor events to allow for T2 and T3 teams to have a means of getting money to sustain themselves then it's not going to be a self-sustainable competitive scene.
overwatch will never be a good esport
But please, by all means pretend that T1 teams just exist out of the blue
trust me
^
"The owners are worried", what? Said who? And they already said they will allow third party events
for the off seasons
I think you need to take off the rosy googles dude. Every red flag looks normal when you're wearing those.
and Contenders itself is a system for those T2/T3 teams '
Does contenders pay out $?
"this is why i think OWL league will be succesful"
yes?
and it was the dumbest thing i have ever read
3 times per year with Academy Teams?
with salary?
as well as opportunity for orgs for buyouts and signing for OWL?
it is from Blizzard?
You don't even know... do you?
yes it did
@sacred surge TF2 does. Check the TF2 website itself.
The issue is that TF2 comp fucking sucks
so where's those money for Contenders then?
6s is a joke, and HL was killed off by TFTV on purpose.
if you don't think that it is not from Blizzard?
if overwatch never came out
i can gurantee you tf2 as an esport would be a success
dude chill
why are you getting so mad
wtf
wasn't a success for nearly a decade
still isn't a success
Nah. TF2 would have moved absolutely nowhere
Casual reminder that the top competitive TF2 team made only ~40K per year from tournaments
:)
oof
TF2 competitive format was hard as fuck to watch
Team Arena Shooters are pretty much the worst kind of games for eSports. Hard to watch, hard to get into, and hard for people to care for.
@sacred surge Let's cool it please.
oof
Overwatch could exit with literally no eSport scene and it would still make them money for years to come. That's the upside of making super casual games.
what happened
oh
The eSports stuff is just a tack on money grab for the casual gameplay. It's the same kind of deal as Hearthstone eSports... except worse.
r i p
The man came in mad, with a point to make, and made it. anal pile driver#1950 you will be remembered ;-;7
no
he was toxic
he was literally the definition of whats wrong with the gaming community
it was like overwatch was his religion
and tf2 was the devil
To be fair, he was right about TF2. It's competitive scene is as much of a joke as Overwatch's. But Overwatch has production value. That's pretty much it
but keep in mind
that tf2 had been alive
for soo long
and the longer it was out
the longer its playerbase was being killed
I am aware, I'm one of TF2's most outspoken critics.
seeing that valve was releasing games such as cs:go and dota 2
valve just took a realization of
"this is a casual game"
"its been out for to long"
competitive TF2 never really had the approval of Valve anyway, which is arguably its death knell
valve never even invested into tf2s competitive
exactly
and thats literally the reason why it was never as succesful
That's not really the thing about TF2 though. Even when it first came out players from TFC claimed it was to ocasual to be competitive.
if blizzard wasnt producing OWL
and willing to put this much into it
then OWL wouldnt be that succesful
Well yeah
That's why people are calling OWL a joke
It's just money being funneled into a cash grab.
ยฏ_(ใ)_/ยฏ
the thing is
it would be complicated to watch
just like tf2 would be
look at a game like rocket league
its so damn simple
rocket league has a huge future in esports
because its so damn simple
LoL and dota 2
are succesful
because games like that were extremely popular and addictive at the time
and still are
its like 5 years from now
LoL probably wont be bigger
and most likely be smaller
Things that make eSports good eSports:
- How easy it is to watch
- How easy it is to get people to watch it
- How easy it is for people to get into playing it
DOTA, LoL, and CS:GO have all of those three
Overwatch hs only one of it, and that seriously hurts it's ability to be an eSport
exactly
im a cs:go player
i think it has a very nice esports scene
i think it has the chance to be more popular than games like dota 2 and LoL
People just always assume that "people can play it in a competition" automatically makes it a good eSport (see: TF2)
yes
its like competitive pokemon
you dont make a lot
but its easy
and for everybody
Bingo
i mean
rocket league
its soccer with cars
doesnt that sound interesting
doesnt that sound pretty easy to watch and play lol
Pretty much all of the top eSports follow those three requirements
literally
although ive never gotten into LoL or Dota 2
arent they a bit more complicated
with all the heroes and everyhing
Yeah, but they were easier than StarCraft and WarCraft 3
oh yeah
They came along at just the right time
ye
another thing
is that
and this is just me
i dont think that in terms of
casual gameplay
overwatch isnt that balanced
but im also really bad at the game
ยฏ_(ใ)_/ยฏ
Blizzard already said that casual gameplay is unbalanced because people play what they want more than what they need at lower ranks/quickplay
Oh yeah it's not at all
Yeah, pretty much
sure it might get some good views
a few tournaments
but i tihnk in the future
its be like
"meh"
It's just a cash grab, that's all anyone who knows eSports is expecting to happen
ye
lkie
the dumbest thread
ive ever read on reddit
"this is why i think OWL is going to be succesful"
and it talked about how
i think his gf or something
asked him about it
then she looked it up
and started watching it
and thats just the dumbest thing ive read
my brother isnt into esports
how do we earn ovwewatch tokens?
the fuck
he investigated
okay what the FUCK Discord, that's not who I tagged at all
he watched a bit
money making bilzzard
literally
its a cash grab rofl
then people complain
"its to support the teams you like"
but i look at things like cs:go
can we give tokens
and to support the teams u like its a dollar
doesnt work
Has there bee any development with getting rewards (the new currency for esports skins) by watching?
Gotta make up for that 20 mil buy in somehow amirite
Oh I see it you have to buy them
Sounds reasonable but I prob won't get them then because all my extra money goes towards new League skins
what's a cleveland brown
NFL team that doesn't win anything
so this question boils down to "who wins in the Florida-Shangai match"
Shangai have room for improvement, as it is Florida are better
florida on the other hand have no room for improvement at all
not until they pick up players
what is your guy favorite owl team?
whoever wins in the first week matchup between Dallas and Seoul
Gladiators
my favorite is the spitfire
haha how did surefour attract your attention?
He was the first OW streamer I watched back in mid 2016
Phili Fusion because hometown bois
surefour is the only carry on gladiators
The tank and support duos are fantastic
And Asher's godly and Hydration's a great support to him and Surefour
says lily completely forgetting that jehong and miro are a thing
Hydration is on my fantasy team
I kind of messed up my pre-draft ranking and now I have six Phili Fusion players ๐
@forest raven
I didn't say they were the best
I said they were fantastic
Shaz/Biggoose are incredible
Nah don't post anything
fiiiiine
Gladiators are in the toughest division though soo good luck to them...
You can tell people that teams have servers @blazing parrot
Just don't post anything

jesus
Anyone else here playing fantasy OWL?
Overwatch would have to sell ninety six million skins before any of the organizations got a single dollar in profit due to the twenty million dollar buy in. Overwatch only has 40 million accounts as a whole.

I'm interested in 96 million skins
Found the guy who will single handedly buy 96 million skins
Hey I never said I could buy them. I would sure as hell try tho
I meant Lily
What does that even mean
as a non immense esports fan is Seoul Dynasty just objectively the best rn?
It's called a jest
Oh no, the jester was fully entertained. It simply lacked appeal to the fool.
I jest, again
Dynasty's core is the old Lunatic-Hai core and they're the most decorated team in OW history
Depending on team formation, Spitfire could beat them
Busan is a rookie squad, even though they royal roaded APEX season 4
And the KongDoo core dominated in all the games they played in the preseason
I'd say Dynasty is the safest bet for best team in the league
Whether that will remain true as the season goes on?
ยฏ_(ใ)_/ยฏ
the most decorated team in history + new all-star dps (fleta, munchkin)
seoul dynasty fighting

I hope Spitfire wins things because I bought some of their skins
Would be highly disappointed to have to buy someone else's

Every team fights each other 4 times
Every fifth week there's "title matches" where the top three most successful teams compete in an additional 2 matches to determine which team wins the first place prize ($100,000) and which team wins the second place prize ($25,000)
Then after five of those five-week cycles (putting us sometime in late June) there's going to be Playoffs & Grand Finals
I don't know anything about those yet
Huh so mamy games?!?
Many many games ... 260 matches total before Playoffs start
(including Preseason)
In other words, the OWL streams will last about ~6 hours a day, 4 days a week, 4/5 weeks until June
Almost enough for OWL to qualify for Obamacare ๐
BILZZARD MAKING MONEY
Blizzard is making a shitload of content
with an obscene schedule
to call this a "cash grab" would be so hilariously misguided
I'm pretty worried about viewership to be honest ... Preseason was a bit of a chore to watch
you don't have to watch every matches
If I could have 4 hours of OW twice a week? I'd totally watch it all
but I'll get burnt out
again, you don't have to watch every matches like other esports
just watch the one you want
All matches are the same except for 2 matches every five weeks that are title matches
and there's not a specific team I want to watch more than the others ...
... sure I'm rooting for London but it's not like London has better or more enjoyable matches than other teams
and if I'm not watching most of the matches that seems to feed into the viewership concern :x
The app is working fine for me on iOS
๐
Took forever to download though
Haha thank you
It takes an instant to download for me on android, but it just crashes
Any other android users that have a working or broken OWL app? @here
Somehow I just have a feeling that Seoul will just own everyone
