I wish they'd make the spectating system something that can be cascaded into a giant tree.
That way you could "live" spectate without hammering the server hosting the event.

Well, like right now, if you spectate a game, you occupy one of the 12 spectator slots on that server. But if each player themselves had 6-12 spectate slots, they could act as a proxy for the original server, minimally delaying the game and adding more slots without adding additional load to the server.
And, by allowing spectators to spectate from another spectator, you effectively have unlimited spectator slots
The only limit is the cumulative delay introduced by each proxy's ping.
But since that's constant, it's kind of a non-issue. You can't interact with the game anyway, so it'd feel like realtime.
Add in a commentator voice channel that cascades down the same way and you have a distributed spectating system.
...I should probably be filing for a patent on this idea.

I wouldn't at all be surprised if there's a game out there that uses what I've outlined.
Any programmer looking at that problem that knows what a tree is will go "oh, yeah, we could just apply this."
The only real challenges in such a system is making it reliable. What happens if you have n levels, but the host at level n-5 disconnects? Do you make all their spectators shift over to another host at level n-5? What if there's not enough slots for everyone?
Also, there's some minor privacy concerns there, too. It implies the spectators at level n-4 can see everyone who is spectating at level n-5.
The more general healing heuristics you apply from standard/established algorithms that deal with tree data, the more you open yourself up to similar privacy concerns.
