We know that his shield blocks molotovs from that one bit of trailer footage. “We are honor” or whatever. So it’s some one way barrier we assume. Because soldiers were shooting from behind his shield and they weren’t accidentally splash damaging themselves when they hit the shield.
My assumption for lore shield is that they can be easily passed through from behind, where you assume your friendliest are, but not from the front, where the bad dudes are. Of course this means that in lore a friendly could damage a friendly shield because friendly fire is on and isn’t.
