you know what would make it less redundant? if he used it
it's there because they couldn't give him regeneration in the game
^
why couldn't they?
Because gameplay and lore are two different things
mercy has regeneration
it may not even be canon that he uses it
Mercy has regeneration because her kit demands it
roadhog has a self-heal
because Soldier is DPS
so what?
Gameplay != Lore
they still gave this dps a heal
I dont give a shit.
they could give him a regeneration ona cooldown and it would be exactly the same
Its gameplay
Gameplay is gameplay
Lore is lore
There is no lore reason why Roadhog can survive taking 8 arrows into his fat gut
But he can in game
For gameplay balance
my point still stands
soldier being superhuman is redundant
Whats being discussed?
He was a rookie
was he? it's the first time I'm hearing this

which one mentions it?
Okay he wasn't. That was my mistake.
At eighteen, Morrison packed his bags and joined the military. He had planned to serve a brief stint in the armed forces and then return home to the family farm, but his work ethic and courage caught the eye of the military brass. Before long, he earned a coveted position in the government's controversial and still-classified (but widely acknowledged) "soldier enhancement program." Military scientists shaped Morrison and other inductees into the perfect soldiers, blessed with superhuman speed, strength, and agility.
well, i wish you were right then
He became a super soldier
Because he was an exceptional soldier
Which made him even better
I confused him and Steve Rogers mentally
because that would add depth to his character AND make his supersoldier backstory non-redundant
Morrison and his fellow augmented soldiers would soon put their abilities to use with the advent of the Omnic Crisis
Every country had their response to the crisis
Germany was crusaders
Korea was MEKA
America was Captain America squads
Jack and Reyes fall under the American section
If Jack wasn't a super soldier
That would be silly
Because it was established that America's response to the Crisis was to pump out super soldiers
And he was put in as the leader of an anti-crisis squad
And he is American
If he was Canadian or French, then sure. It would be meaningless
But he is American
hey how about this - what if there was an Super-Duper-Soldier program, that only exceptional supersoldiers could become a part of ? And he got in to overwatch because he was an exception Super-Duper-Soldier? And what is there was an Extra-Super-Duper-Soldier program, that only exceptional Super-Duper-Soldiers could become a part of? And he got in to overwatch because he was an exception Extra-Super-Duper-Soldier? ... now do you see my point?
but there didn't need to be
why not make up three steps to overwatch? or four? or five?
you're the ones arguing that it was absolutely necessary to make him a supersoldier, now tell me why super-duper oldier point would be more redundant
Why not send in the ghosts? Or the Marines? Maybe fly in with a Banshee or send in an fleet of Thors
they already did. they sent ana, a soldier from the egyptian army
and torbjorn, a mechanic
If you want to argue that the super soldier program is irreelvant.
The Crusader program is also irrelevant
As is the MEKA program
heh
But then at that point you should ask
What is relevant
What in this universe falls under your definition of relevant
the crusader program is not irrelevant, because it's the reason why brigitte is now Rein's squire. you generally aren't a squire to a soldier
what
Jesus christ
Yeah, this chat is just nonsense
Okay, so lets suppose
that's
such a stretch to defend your flawed point
Rein is just an exception chivalrous soldier. Same personality, same don quixote.
Still would invite Brig as his squire
The ones who think they are don quixote
rein ahrdt would have to specificallyt consider himself a knight
except in this scenario, he just named himself a knight. a literal don quixote
that makes him a little more silly, than having it be a part of his profession, don't you think?
He isnt a knight.
And even that aside
she doesn't have to be his squire
she could be his sidekick or protege
nothing about their relationship would change
Under your argument
Is redundant
Butch Cassidy wasn't a knight, he still had the Sundance Kid
Big Daddy wasn't a knight, still had Hit Girl
thing is... if brig wanted to become a soldier, then at her age, a logicla step would be to join the army, not hang out with some old man
I assume that she is his squire because that's how you become a crusader
She doesn't want to be a soldier. She doesn't want to be a crusader either.
She just wants to help Reinhardt
if she just wants to help rein hardt, then her being his "squire" is already redundant. I'm disappointed, I thought she was a crusader-in-training
she wants to put her skills to use
Your standards of what is and isnt redundant
Is absurd
You are establishing entire character traits and world features
As redundant
What isnt redundant
And I dont mean minor character traits or features
I mean like
Major points
Core ideas
if you come up with some weird and convoluted backstory and superpowers and then not use it in any way that couldn't have been done with all the other weird and convoluted superpowers you have available, then they are redundant
you know what was redundant? having him shoot these webs because he created a device for himself to do that. when he could've just gotten that power from the bite. which is why the original movie trilogy decided to scrap the tech part and make all of his powers come from the bite
It's also not remotely convoluted
because if he was shooting them out of his ass, it would've been uncomfortable
Thats also redundant.
Why not just be like Batman and have grapple hooks
No superpowers needed
In fact, why even have a spider theme
That is also redundant
The shooters being mechanical have relevance to the story
even aside from Jewvia's sarcasm
@iron plume I know.
Also, the original version of Soldier 76 pre-OW was a super soldier who lost his memory after an apocalypse
I know you do i'm talking to that guy
he is spiderman. he needs spiderpoowers. he got his powers from a spider's bite. of course, he could've also gotten his powers from tech, like batman, but that would make the spider's bite redundant. hence why I approved of the original movie trilogy changing his webshooting powers to fit the bite rather than having him have all of his powers from several different soucres
Peter Parker is supposed to be a real genius. The original trilogy makes him look like an idiot
Not to mention those two Andrew Garfield movies...
he is spiderman. he needs spiderpoowers
But that's redundant. He can just be grapple man. With grappling hooks and wall-stick gloves
then he wouldn't be spiderman
Exactly - that's why the Garfield and MCU Spider-men designed their own web shooters
And Reinhardt wouldn't be Reinhardt.
To show how smart he was
And he still needed to get bit by a spider because he would've been too timid without the powers
but soldier could still be hismelf without the supersoldier program. making it - ta da!- redundant!
It was just a writer's choice
and I wish they did something with it
And it helps explain what gave him the edge when joining OW
And they have done things with him being a super soldier - it's where his name comes from
what is u talking about
And he's been shown to have advanced physiology
Taigavia had a good idea, making him originally a rookie who got in only thanks to his superpowers. that would put an interesting spin on his character. maybe he would always feel like he needs to prove himself? maybe he'd be secretly feeling guilty?
Omnic Crisis: Starts
Every Country: Tried to do something to fight back
- Germany: Crusaders
- America: Super soldiers
- Korea: MEKA
Every Country: Fails
UN: Okay, lets just team up then
Overwatch: Is made
Soldier and Reyes: Are Americans -> Drafted into OW elite squad
Reinhardt: Is German -> Drafted into OW elite squade
Korea: MEKA drones are drones, no pilots yet -> No one joins OW because there is no one to join
alright, i can give you that
Ana is probably an elite sniper too
that explanation makes sense
I said that an hour ago
And Torbjörn was relevant since he helped design the Omnics
glad we finally came to it, after an hour of arguiment
But in less eli5 terms
you didn't mention that it's supposed to fit a patern of each country coming up with their own way of defeating the omnics, before joining up
he did
but sure, if you prefer to belittle me, go for it
guess I've missed it. the chat was going pretty fast
hm, guess I really did miss it
You then said "Why arent there super super soldiers, or super super super soldiers, or super super super super soldiers"
I was already writing that when you posted yours
plus you were rude to me throughout the whole conversation, that didn't exactly motivate me to read everything you write, with the chat moving so fast
I don't recall being rude to you, belittling you, implying you're stupid
It took incredible restraint to try and remain as nice as I was with such an absurd topic.
And you failed in that
you weren't nice at all
it took restraint from me to not reply in kind
Moving on to something worthwhile
I'm probably gonna make a quick !!tag for the stuff that is core for new people to the lore
good idea
I was thinking of putting in:
- Playlist of all the shorts - Lets be real, they're easy to consume and the most popular. And most are relevant
- Important Comics: Binary and Masquerade
- The Ana/Soldier long arc: Legacy -> Old Soldiers -> Bastet -> Valkyrie
- Bonus WYLB because it is tied to Recall.
Should I make a Junkrat list too, even though they're not important
Because there is a 3 piece progression
not in the basics
i hope they take it a step beyond "the story so far" what theyve done on the OW2 site (where they list the shorts), and actually find a better way to spread the existing lore so people can more easily get into OW2 and the story in general. honestly would be surprised if they didnt find a way to do something like that at launch
but that could just be as a reading guide
This is a guide for people who don't know where to begin with the lore of Overwatch. The first thing is probably to go watch the shorts. They're popular, easy to consume, and pack a lot of story and character.
Shorts Playlist: https://bit.ly/2UQyTeL
There are many comics, short stories, and blog posts as well. The most important ones are:
Binary: https://bit.ly/2IzNvJy
Masquerade: https://bit.ly/2IzNTI0
What You Left Behind: https://bit.ly/2Fh7MRz
There is also an important chain of events following Ana and Soldier 76 (and Mercy at the end):
Legacy: https://bit.ly/2DgM1jQ
Old Soldiers: https://bit.ly/2KLILTV
Bastet: https://bit.ly/2QuXHmM
Valkyrie: https://bit.ly/2CF5JVE
The rest of the stories are mostly optional. Special mention goes out to the Junkers, who have an entertaining string of stories:

Thoughts?
wouldn't sombra's parts be important too? it seems to be shaping up to an ongoing storyline
What did I miss?
Searching undid the cliff hanging from Infiltration
And set up little afterwards
hm.. I guess
but without these two + sombra's backstory, newcomers won't be aware that there is some global conspiracy going on, that may or may not be connected to the shambali and zen, who we know will reappear
Searching adds nothing to that
But I didnt include any backstories, that's a good point
I'll throw in
!!loreHeroes

ah, ok
They're from Warcraft
by Blizzard Entertaimend & Tracy W. Bush, Russell Brower, Derek Duke, Jason Hayes, Glenn Stafford and Matt Uelmen for composing the music.
am i imagining things or does the commando 76 skin for soldier look like frank woods from cod
He's got a point
he looks like any generic soldier
i mean i see it
Okay
Excuse me,in overwatch, isn't orisa's fusion driver an energy weapon?
Not all overwatch abilities in game are canon
Aah ok
The fusion driver absolutely is canon and an energy weapon, though.
We haven’t seen her use it in lore, but it’s a pretty visible part of her body
I’d put it more on the plausible side that it works similar to in-game
I still insist, Searching didn't undo the cliffhanger from Infiltration, it just recontextualized it
Why would Zarya have known exactly what was going on?
Searching is the most flawed comic, but mainly because of the plot
Katya told her that she was being blackmailed by a hacker named Sombra, she didn’t have to share the details
exactly (I imagine)
Honestly it’s likely more that Zarya is so nationalistic than her being good at tracking that got her the assignment
Smarter people would do it faster but wonder what could have initiated it
That’s my take on it at least
Katya thought it was better to wait on the one who wouldn’t come back empty handed and wouldn’t second guess her, despite the added time to wait for success
Plus just paying an omnic who actually knows some stuff
Tbh though, very few of the comics really matter to the lore, it’s just that searching was directly teased and linked from a cinematic, so that leads to higher expectations
What was Sombra using to blackmail Katya?
That Katya was working with omnics
And her as a russian leader with russia hard hard hard hating omnics
Would be the equivalent of a KKK member being friends with a black man
Essentially yeah
Would be the equivalent of a KKK member being friends with a black man
@worthy rose lmao thats a good analogy
I mean that actually happened
but it's more like the leader of the KKK working together with the Black Panthers
it'd be like Trump having a immigrant wife
Getting a little off topic, it’s not really the analogy that matters
She was making deals with the devil to the public’s eye, and she wanted it covered up
How about thinking of it like a pvp game being very well balanced
what?
Not my best analogy when I think about it
I've been thinking about the Deadlock Gang's logo (and how there are 2 different versions), and it made me think maybe McCree lost his arm because the Deadlock Rebels found him and chopped it off
the Deadlock Rebels being a one-percent biker gang founded in 1976 that were the original owners of the logo McCree stole
its probably no coincidence that the arm with the tattoo was the one that was lost
thats a lil dark
woah
I doubt they have something to do with it
If they had, he wouldn't have been so secretive about how he lost it in yhe Reunion short. And all those cryptic comments about the unfinished business
it wasn't exactly secretive, he just didn't have time to tell her
and the unfinished business is unrelated
I personally suspect he lost his arm trying to confront Reaper at some point
McCree hasn't faced Reaper yet
Do we know that?
Chu said McCree doesn't know who Reaper really is, but if they met he would recognize him
To clarify about the Reaper/Reyes thing, yes it is because they have not met in the "current day" of Overwatch. The interactions in the game are meant to be what ifs. I do think that McCree would known that Reaper was Reyes if he encountered him.
Great, thanks!
tbh there isn't much to support my idea
It's weird that Ashe acts like he's just turned up after a very long absence, if he and DG had an encounter not very long ago
he is turning up after a long absence
To be fair, aside from reaper and DG, he doesn't really have much link to anybody that could take his arm off
in my theory, Deadlock Gang and Deadlock Rebels are different groups
the logo says Deadlock Rebels, but Ashe's gang is only ever called "the Deadlock Gang"
which makes me think it was stolen from another gang
and there's 2 versions of the logo
the version with the date and the eyepatch is only ever seen on McCree - as his tattoo on both Blackwatch and Deadlock, and on the back of his jacket on Deadlock
the version without the date and the eyepatch is seen everywhere else the logo appears
on Ashe, in the clubhouse, on the merch
now obviously, Ashe and McCree didn't create the Deadlock Gang in 1976
But another gang might've been
they weren't born until around the 2030s-2040s
yes
at first I thought the version with the date was a mistake
And they... idk, destroyed it? And then some survivors went after Mccree as revenge, because he no longer had Overwatch to protect him
but then the Deadlock skin for McCree was released last year, and still had the date on it
which tells me it's intentional
Unrelated, but who told Zarya about Sombra's real name - Katya, or Lynx? Lynx didn't seem to even know she's a person, much less her real name
Oh
but to Alejandra, Sombra is a local who is sometimes good, sometimes bad, and Zarya said anyone who had information would be her hero
She would have gotten away, if it weren't for that meddling kid! 😂
Alejandra, who saw Soldier and still believes in heroes
but anyway, maybe somehow, someone from the original Deadlock Rebels tracked down McCree (Ashe was too dangerous to go after, and had already changed the logo) and ends up injuring him so badly that he needs a new arm
idk, I haven't really thought of the details
I could be wrong about what happened to his arm, but I'm pretty sure about the logo
It's possible that this might be connected to one of the new heroes in OW2,hence why they're keeping it a secret from us until they're introduced
could be that too
Plus, it's a game rated pg-12, and showing a character losing a limb onscreen wouldn't be very appropriate. I wonder how they're planning to handle it.
or maybe they haven't thought about it yet
Ouch... possible though
they do leave a lot of loose threads that they can pick up later
That's good. It opens up thd possibility for overwatch 3
I think they could show McCree losing his arm, much in the way they showed Reinhardt losing his eye - show the injury, but minimal blood, maybe hide it and only imply what happened
they probably couldn't do that with Genji's injuries though
You've gotta wonder what the hell did Hanzo do to him that resulted in such a massive damage
I don't think all the cyberization was to repair what Hanzo did - I think some of it was upgrades that Genji opted into
Why not just shoot him in the head or slit his throat and be done with it? It seems extraordinarily cruel of him
And he didn't even finish him off
like, Genji said he wanted to walk again, so his spine was probably damage, but replacing his legs was probably to improve his agility
He might've wanted to send a message?
Or he could've been looking away and made some blind hacks
maybe Hanzo was trying to do minimal injury to make Genji admit defeat, but he wouldn't, so Hanzo had to escalate
until he ends up going too far
Upon the death of his father, the clan elders instructed Hanzo to straighten out his wayward younger brother so that he, too, might help rule the Shimada empire. When his brother refused, Hanzo was forced to kill him.
he wasn't ordered to kill him
Hanzo was told to make Genji fall in line (probably by whatever means necessary)
I think Hanzo just kept escalating until it went too far
Maybe by "refused" it means "refused to help run the Shimada empire"
yeah
That definitely explains why they would fight the way they did
Genji would fight to defend himself
I wonder if Talon was involved with their father's death. Since he refused to join them
but maybe he didn't have the killer instinct Hanzo has, so he pulled his strikes
Talon indeed might have been involved but we have no idea
@placid fulcrum it is said that his death was untimely/unexpected
so there could be foul play
Oooh
So it is definitely possible yes
although I suspect the clan elders more than Talon
since Sojiro refused to work with Talon
maybe the elders didn't like that
Overwatch was surveying the Shimada clan at the time too though
I doubt it. They'd have to kill hanzo too then
Though that could've been Talon-related too
Or Hanzo might've been a little more open on joining Talon back then
or that
Hanzo does seem like he was "do as you're told" before leaving the clan
the elders told him to turn on his own brother, after all - and he did it
He might've genuinely somewhat resented Genji's actions though
could be
we don't know much about what happened
(let's hope Alyssa writes a short story about it)
This is why I'd like to know about the past, perhaps even more than about the present
I want to know if Hanzo rejected the clan immediately, or if it was a slow simmer of realizing what he did (resulting in his Scion look)
This act broke Hanzo's heart and drove him to reject his father's legacy, ultimately leading him to abandon the clan and all that he had worked so hard to attain.
the phrasing makes me think he didn't abandon the clan right away
maybe he stewed for a bit
So where does Revenant fit into the lore now that season 4 is here?
!!loreonly @rich flare

Snitch
You're a big one you are
wrong game
Did you see that? http://maassagency.com/overwatch-the-hero-of-numbani-by-nicky-drayden/
June is too far away T^T
Can't wait for that book
I'm glad more underrated heroes are getting the spotlight
It'll be cool to learn more about Efi too
All characters are black.
I can hear the forums complaining already
"forced diversity!"
nah that's the other part of the playbook
for stories that sensibly have non-white people their "argument" is "well why don't they put diversity in those ones"
What about that Orisa novel?
like people complaining there are only koreans in Parasite
is there any new infos about it?
this is the Orisa novel
that's what a novel is
then can you answer my question about new infos? when it will be avaiable?
There is some in that listing
in June
So about the info in that page about the novel
We're gonna meet a founder of overwatch apparently
maybe
she's the one giving out the award, but that night just be mentioned in passing
If Gabrielle Adawe is still alive - I really hope to meet her!
she put the team together
she's like the Amanda Waller of Overwatch
the Numbani airport is named after her
She's the UN person responsible for forming the team
"All characters are black" a chance for Lucio/Sojourn/Baptiste/Mauga to appear, then?
Lucio is supposed to make an appearance
Sojourn/Baptiste/Mauga have no reason to appear
What you guys think about this "leak" of an upcoming animated series about ow?
You think it will be a spin off? Maybe for the junkers?
I think it will cover the main plot, matching the missions we get in OW2
at least now we know where Efi was flying to when the airport got attacked
That's why I'm wondering if we will see Lucio.. it seems that she was planning a trip to see a concert in Rio no?
and we'll learn how long it took to build Orisa
Netflix anime confirmed. Cool.
It’ll be interesting to see how much of a role Orisa will have
What you guys think about this "leak" of an upcoming animated series about ow?
@teal meadow I think it will be epic, but lack plot. Although we have no idea yet
The source is the co president's linkedin
Of Activision Blizzard
The only more reliablr source is Jeff or Chu's LinkedIn
So if it's talking about anime
are we to assume it'll be similar to Voltron's animation style or are we assuming it's like the doomfist trailer?
Unclear
I'm just happy it's not live action
^
y
I just hope it's told the same way clone wars is; it's going to be so hard to do it otherwise with the wide cast we currently have
Also; Live action anything game related has a trend of being kinda terrible
can you elaborate on that cause i have no idea what that is
We have a cast of 30+ heroes. For each of them to get a snippit of being shown (Which I'd personally like cause I find roadhog and junkrat to be both comedic and tragic figures whom really don't tie into the main plot)
Clone Wars tells episodes in not really an episodic order but in short random perspectives. Sometimes it's an Anakin episode; other times it's a yoda episode; each episode more or less focuses on certain characters and their journeys throughout their own individual story that will eventually tie into the main conflict.
And with a wide cast; you can show a lot of fan favorites who wouldn't otherwise be involved with said conflict.
But if you do it in the traditional format it would just be the main team of winston, tracer, sojourn, genji, mercy, reinhardt and brig; and while they are great, they only make up a smaller more idealistic part of the cast given to us
Also cause trying to juggle 30+ characters in the span of the season would be really difficult otherwise
yeah, i think that would be the best way to go about it, although it does take away stuff like cliffhangers and long storylines to get hyped about. but they can still do like, however many episodes, with episodes 4-7 for example all being part of the same story that needs extra time
And with a wide cast; you can show a lot of fan favorites who wouldn't otherwise be involved with said conflict.
@worthy rose My fan favourite is Maximilien... He'll probably hang out behind the curtain 🤧
I'm not saying there won't be arcs
but I'm saying they could subtly weave their way around to tie into the conflict
Having a love death robots type vibe might not be so bad ether, with completely unrelated episodes just like the comics, possibly with mixed art styles
almost like the current shorts, theyre all different heroes but they all roughly connect the heroes to recall
I claim clone wars is epic because it would be very hard to see a character like reaper be willing to sit in the same room as junkrat
Epic way to handle the story telling*
Right
Or DVA and Doomfist even talking
Hence why smaller episodes focused; like episode 1: we learn of the main conflict
episode 2 we see McCree doing actions that help echo or whatever
episode 3 we learn of doomfist's plans
and over the course of the season we see individual characters slowly getting involved until basically Null Sector world wide invasion
only null sector
Overwatch’s heroes are meant to be the most exceptional individuals across the globe, not just in one group, so having a scattered story is almost required if having the full roster is important
how about omnics from Paris... or they'll join null-sector too? There can't be just one fraction
I'm not saying it has to be null sector; You could theoretically do a lot
for example
You could do it in the traditional story format and start literally at the beginning of the strike team days. This would make balancing the cast fairly simple. And you have action epics and season 2 being the introduction of the golden years. The Tracers and Genji's and McCrees being involved and joining
And then you go into individual episodes from then on
And season 3 would be where OW 2 would be starting plot wise if given this format
Cause there was a lot of stuff OW dealt with in the 20+ years they were acting that could make for standalone stories
We could see Operation White dome
the mission where torb lost his arm
I would enjoy that but I have a nagging feeling it’ll mostly take place in present time
Ana's struggle to deal with her relationship with Sam and Pharah's upbringing
Soldier's lack of ability to balance his personal life and his work life
Gabriel's descent into evil
etc... etc...
Cause there was a lot of stuff OW dealt with in the 20+ years they were acting that could make for standalone stories
yeah... but that will be a lot of episodes.... i'd like to see characters families. (Gabriel one ☺️ )
That's a lot of POTENTIAL
@worthy rose but leak wasn't confirmed so
For all we know it could just follow one character and flesh them out and those around them
Wasn't it confirmed by the co-president at blizzard?
See the one character thing could work
but I think that'd be an utter waste of the majority of the cast
anything could work
it wasnt meant to go public, but the dude put it on his linkedin profile so
I love Tracer but having her be the only main focus with a wide variety would be a let down
Lore junkies are so starved they’ll watch a Mei yule log ffs
we will but like
when we know there are efforts to bring in more lore
we desperately want that effort in the right place
I love Tracer but having her be the only main focus with a wide variety would be a let down
@worthy rose I don't like Tracer at all... But she's a mascot
are you saying its impossible to have bad lore
I’m saying bad lore is better than what we have now
@valid terrace agree, 2019 was poor for lore... But i really liked Baptiste
it is, im hyped and grateful for what theyre doing. but knowing that they are doing it, we want it to be as best as it can, so their efforts arent wasted to make something mediocre
he's not lore relevant, just Baptiste appreciation
granted im not picky and wont complain regardless of what we get
he's not lore relevant
he's shaping up to be kind of
if you havent read his short story
I truly wouldn’t mind a short series devoted to Reaper and everything that’s led him to now
there are def less relevant heroes than bap
if you havent read his short story
@lament prawn i read it, I just think we didn't need him, just like Ashe
but he's better than Ashe
I like the bright optimist characters. We have been in a sea of gritty crappy shooters with bleak worlds whose best features are the random technology they use to beat whatever alien, terrorist, robot or zomebie/zomebie like creature whose biggest thing is "We can beat this menace if we all work together as one militaristic unit"
The exception being fortnite
I think that’s mostly because rated M games get in a lot less trouble generally
I like Mirage, but I dislike Tracer... yep. Tracer is annoying to me, that is all
I like the bright optimist characters. We have been in a sea of gritty crappy shooters with bleak worlds whose best features are the random technology they use to beat whatever alien, terrorist, robot or zomebie/zomebie like creature whose biggest thing is "We can beat this menace if we all work together as one militaristic unit"
huge MOOD, ive pretty much isolated myself to disney films and the like because of this
I'm just bored; christ dude so many shooters involve basically military gameplay with gritty worlds that you essentially destroy with a grizzled attitude. Give me the bright happy character who is hopeful af.
Showing me that there is faith in the world
cause the world low key doo doo
I mean rn
same, i play/watch stuff for entertainment, not to immerse myself in a world even worse than ours
First Orisa novel, then hero 32 and a series, then OW2, I’m
hero 32 is unlikely to come soon
i dont want ow2
It seems like the series will either be with ow2 or before from what I’m reading
Hero 32 is guaranteed to be before so I’m assuming first but don’t know tbh
a series then ow2? you think the series is coming before?
I just know that new hero will be echo/sojourn... And I don't like them. I don't even dare to talk about balance issues
The points that make sense to me are that it is to ride out the lore drought or to hype up OW2 aka agents of shield style
Releasing a series with or shortly after OW2 is like dumping water in a lake
Sure it’s good, but less necessary
Tracer's bullets don't one clip him
I’m putting my chips on Echo
i honestly i see the series as more juicy and hype worthy than OW2 story-wise, but yeah the game will be their main source of income
Echo design is bland... Another kind omnic? Thank you.
I hope for her relevance to the story... But i probably will be dissapointed
If gameplay is like what we’ve seen of the characters, we’re either dealing with Bap with Apex slide, or Sym with wings
youve complained about how many characters in a row now? in the last like 5 minutes?
Nothing too game breaking fr
I’ve wanted some more substantial lore sources for a long time, and knowing we have in the works a book, a series, and a full campaign with possible side missions is such a great feeling that I don’t even mind the months lying between them
honestly same
like the amount of lore i know we'll be getting feels so surreal, being used to what we're used to
Like, just the series, one episode is at least the length of a cinematic
If at normal length they’re worth 2-4
btw, what do you think about moira's eyes condition? she wore glasses from childhood
And as soon as it airs, Doc will tell us all the tiny details that everyone missed
Seeing as the series was JUST "announced", I think it'll take place after OW 2
She has heterochromia
@valid terrace I usually don't miss details
@valid terrace aside from that, she wore visor, and then got an implant
Okay, but Doc is like t500 lore keeper, they find like single frame items that have lore implications
Wait, who wore visor and got implants?
Moira?
i know... i'm just good at overwatch lore. only thing I miss is interviews/tweets
Yes, Moira
I made a post about it, but my forums got dropped
Can you give me the source for those, I must’ve missed that
i said, my forum got dropped, you can enter story discussion
Rip
Echo isn't an omnic
Echo isn't an omnic
@pliant sparrow why? new model?
Jeff avoids calling her an omnic
he only calls her a robot
so she probably wasn't built in an omnium
i wonder where she was built in overwatch possibly?
I assume in the Watchpoint in Colorado(?) because she was in Arizona on a weapons transport which I assume falls under America’s jurisdiction
Could be
whats this about a series?
an Overwatch animated series is in development
It was "leaked" by the president or founder of whatever he is of Blizzard
President of the Activision-Blizzard Studio, which handles film and TV productions for all of Activision-Blizzard's IPs
3d or hand-drawn?
imagine studio orange handling a 3d overwatch animated series, or ufotable or madhouse handling a traditionally animated show
sounds expensive
ufo and madhouse are both very expensive, ye
hopefully this book helps refine the timeline of Orisa's creation/Doomfist's escape
...
Rule 7 bruh
I highly doubt that the tv series is going to cover the same things as the story in overwatch 2. most likely, the series will focus on characters that won't be in the story. I'd be overjoyed if it covered events in the past, too
About the upcoming ow anime, are we sure it's not some spin off of overwatch 2?
Like, we all know junkers will not be involved into the main plot of he overwatch vs talon/null sector...
I can see them making a comical series about junkrat and roadhog looking for treasures
It's not confirmed to be an anime. Diablo is anime yes - but Overwatch is "animated" - nothing precise yet
It might just be blizzard are gonna start making animated shorts more
That would be cool
I'm scared they're lowkey going to butcher the characters lmao
2d is hardly less expensive unless you completely phone it in
it's a lot less expensive
some of my friends are 2d animators. they barely have enough to eat
on the other hand, a lot of the costs of 3d animation is from creating and rigging the models, the environments. blizzard already has those. they'd only have to pay for the animation itself and set the episodes on the existing maps
that would significantly cut down the costs and time of production
But what if the series is just like this one? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_q0QGtk_AM0
Made with this engine i mean
I'd be down with it
I have a feeling Null Sector is going to try and destroy Junkertown
I mean, Null Sector wanted to create an Omnic State, right?
Meanwhile, the Australian outback had basically given the Omnics the outback, which was denied by the ALF and the Junkers that remain
I'm not sure if the aims of Null Sector will be the same in OW2, but given they operate outside of the UK now, I can't help but think they'd be highly interested in reclaiming the Omnium from a bunch of barely-organized humans
(I wonder if the 'treasure' Junkrat found in the Omnium would become important in that scenario?)
Can you imagine if the show was just red vs blue but on overwatch maps, I’d cry
I'd hate that
Yeah it would be terrible
Also they have basic designs for the maps but the actual maps being used part of the show without redrawing to fit the style of the animation would be ass
That’s basically how the cinematic are made anyhow
I do wonder what animation style they're going for
Cause the closest to anime style is the doomfist trailer
I'd like something like that
As long as it isn’t overly stylized like a Cartoon Network reboot then I’m good
it probably won't be
Probably
it will probably match Overwatch's art style
Jeff is a very enigmatic man, he might try something ‘fun’
would it be up to him?
I thought he got call on overwatch related things
I think it's more likely to be up to Arnold Tsang, the art director
As long as it's close to the anime style shown previously
or the same art style as like Voltron's
I'd be okay with that
why not?
The 3D cinematics would take too much time/money to animate if they were a full show I'd imagine
we don't know how much time/money they have available
a company like Blizzard could afford it
Yeah especially with it being part of a media plan
it could be 3d, but i doubt it'll be the work of the blizzard cinematics team unless they make some major changes (or have they done this type of thing before?)
It probably would have similar costs to the OW league
But I don't think they'll spend that much on a TV show
they could afford it but the question isn't that
it's whether they would make enough money on it to be "worth"
I found some sources (wiki, TGN's video) claiming that winston was close with Ana, but I couldn't find any direct lore source on this. Can someone help?
what do you mean by close?
I don't think Winston and Ana have much of a relationship, aside from both being part of Overwatch
TGN doesn't do very good fact-checking
the footnote cites Winston's quotes and Recall
Winston doesn't have any interactions with Ana or Reyes
and Recall doesn't mention either of them
hm, guess the wiki is wrong then
that's not exactly saying that Winston admired her
it's just pointing out how much everyone in Overwatch looked up to Captain Amari
also, that line does not exist in the files
do we know anything about how winston joined overwatch? there's that graduation photo, but do we know who recruited him? surely a talking gorilla raised some questions? and reyes obviously hated him
ok, thanks
also it's important to remember that the wiki is not an official source, and can be edited by anyone
so anything found there should be double-checked
do some fact-checking of your own
I do wish we knew more about heroes's opinions of each other
I want to see winston and sigma actually meet in ow2
That would be a very interesting conversation
that's why I'm asking about this here 😃 No one knows the lore better than you
Reyes doesn’t seem to hate Winston, he seems to consider him to be a minor threat. Notice how in all the cinematically where they fought reaper lost because he underestimated Winston?
I think Reaper just treats him like all the ex Overwatch agents
Which we still don’t know the reason for
My guess is he feels like Overwatch agents ignored his suggestions on how to make the organization recover from the damage dealt to its reputation?
We do know that he feels like OW agents gave up on him
And Ana
The dude is on an organization wide manhunt and is out for blood
I think it’s more than corporate decision making
reyes never cared about reputation. but looking at the winston quotes, I noticed the little exchange in storm rising, where they comment that Jack was under pressure to disband the strike team, and that reyes argued with him about it
with blackwatch gone, and the strike team gone, overwatch would become a much more beaurocratic and passive organization, rather than active fighters
that might've been what reyes disapproved of. he wanted overwatch to be engaged in active combat. I'm just not sure how would starting a rebellion against jack make it possible
could be
even if he managed to defeat him, why would anyone just... accept him as the new leader? this wasn't an underground criminal organization where everyone accepted the rule of the strongest. that's not how promotion works
there must be something more to this
hence why I wonder if he was going to become a double agent for talon and the rebellion was only supposed to give him credibility. but things got out of control, which resulted in the explosion
We don't know the full story behind the rebellion
In fact, we barely know anything about it
Anyone think overwatch 2 will be well written
Yup. Why wouldn't it be?
lmao idkkk
I’m like very confuse how the omnic crises is returning and we are getting a bunch of killer robot
can someone explain to me wtf happened
U just didn’t realize there was a bunch of robots being made and ur like...... eh that’s normal
the omnic crisis never stopped
Not all of the robots were bad
Some of the omniums were never located/destroyed
From the trailer, it wasn't an omnic crisis, it was null sector returning
It's a sort of psuedo omnic crisis
Are the omniums producing the omnics? Very likely no but the source of this new world conflict is the omnics
they are not producing the omnics?
Omniums are still producing omnics - the ones not destroyed :
OR-15s were built in "Nigeria's massive manufacturing omnium".
The Siberian Omnium was long-dormant but it attacked again (Zarya biography)
There is some "omnic monstruisity" that adapt and continue to attack Korea every once in a while - and it seems it produce the small ommnics in Shooting Stars
I do wonder if the gwishin itself is the omnium
That is interesting because of the OW2 rio missions - the omnicsare coming from giant aircraft producing them so.... it's a possibility?
See that's where I'm also like "Huh..."
Cause the Gwishin has been around for a long time; even before null sector
And I don't think OW would just let a giant destructive monstrosity like the gwishin keep doing what it's doing
unless they either couldn't stop it
or something made them unable to; like say the core of the omnium. We know that wen omniums are blown up; the result is radiation of some sort akin to junkers so overwatch couldn't just take it down like other omniums
I assumed they literally just couldn't attack it because it was somewhere deep in the ocean
See I'm against that mainly because this is the future and you have gone through a technological age where you can put monkeys on the moon; I highly doubt they didn't have advance submarine technology to find a giant robot that destroys cities on the east asia coast
The Gwishin itself sure seems like the Omnium
I mean
Finding it might be possible
But we've only been to the deepest part of the ocean once
Also, here's a sort of misconception I imagine many people might have with the lore: it is not said that the original Overwatch strike team destroyed all the Omniums (save the one the Russians destroyed)
Instead, it is said that Overwatch destroyed their command and control infrastructure
maybe Korea simply didn't want Overwatch to operate within their borders. They had the situation under control.
it's also possible that there is some shady reason for them to not search for the gwishin. similarly to how Katya Volskaya had a deal with the omnics in Russia.
perhaps keeping the gwishin away but not dead was in some way more profitable that destroying it for good
Maybe they profit from the war
i’m pretty sure my foot has more lore than ow
thas just mean
!!shitposting @worthy rose
@worthy rose Shitposting will result in a loss of access.
i’m sorry it’s just a fact the lore in this game is so fucking bad it’s been 4 years and we barley know anything about the characters, i love this game but you have to admit.
The Gwishin didn't emerge until after the Crisis
the only problem is that very little of that lore appears in the game
which OW2 will fix
Well, at least as a distinct problem
for a competitive team based shooter, we have a lot of lore that they didnt even have to make
And if the Gwishin mothership is the Omnium, it explains why it isn't just destroyed
The game was advertised as story driven, and yet for most characters all we know about them is that little paragraph on the blizzard site and maybe an animated short.
hopefully ow2 fixes this but it’s still bugging me we don’t have more lore after 4 years.
that little paragraph on the blizzard site and maybe an animated short
go look at the pins
?
the game wasn't really advertised as story driven
the devs made the choice to have the story exist outside the game and the game is non-canon
for most characters, we have quite a bit of backstory on them
We've had a reasonable amount of lore in the past 4 years, what are you on about?
Y’all hear about the Overwatch cartoon on Netflix
That's a common misconception that it will be on Netflix. I think it will be on YouTube
people just assume Netflix because Diablo was for Netflix
And Skylanders too
Yeah
Netflix is probably the best option
my foot hurts
common missconsepson
Lmao an aninated series would be bad
If its in a way
Netflix makes it look like a joke
why would it be bad?
people have been asking for this for years
Im just worried
and they've hired a few new writers recently
Mhm...
as long as it meets the standard of the existing lore, it will be fine
Would they have the same voice actors?
Well ig it would be a new way to introduce new heroes as well
possibly
I mean I'd like the same Voice actors
but getting voice actors, or the same voice actors for all the heroes would be kinda challengeing
most of them do work in animation already
Oh I know that
but to get all 30+ VA's back on the project
would be difficult if they haven't already discussed it prior
The one that I think about would be like potentially Moira's VA or Tracer's VA. Both are already actors aren't they for shows atm?
not every character needs speaking part right away in season 1. there could be some characters that will only have cameos.
the show will have to be for people whoi don't know Overwatch at all too - because that's the point of doing a show - the viewer has to love it
there are so many ways to do an Overwatch animated series - I hope they'll make the right choices
I doubt the story will be the same as the one in the game, so I hope to it will be set during the time when Overwatch was still in operation. I want to see the start of their conflict with Talon, to see Talon become a genuinely terrifying threat. I want to see more fleshed out character interactions.
What I'm absolutely terrified of is the possibility that the show might have an original cast and only be set in the world of Overwatch
setting it during that time period means some heroes won't make an appearance at all
I don't expect them all to make an appearance anyway
some people do
30+ characters in one season? No way
They'll probably focus on the main characters - Tracer, Soldier, Ana, etc
they could if the series had an episodic format, rather than a continuous plotline
if Tracer is involved, it won't be Golden Age Overwatch
Would people unfamiliar with the game want to watch an episodic tv show about characters they don't know or xare about though?
it would have to be either during the Fall or post-Recall
Hm... not ideal, but possible
or during the period without Overwatch, but that's less interesting
Yup
that's why I think the series would cover present day, not past stories
a lot of popular heroes can't get screentime if it's set in the past
Thing is, Tracer is their posterchild, so she would most likely be the main character
But if all the present-day story is in the tv show, what incentive do people have for buying the game?
The story is the main selling point of Overwatch 2. Spoiling it wouldn't be profitable
why does anyone buy the novelization/comic book for a game?
Because they're existing fams
Nobody buys a novelization for a game they haven't played
it depends who the audience for the series is then
I doubt the tv show is for the existing fans
It doesn't seem very profitable. And again- even most existing fans won't pay for the game if they already know the story from a cartoon
I'm nervous for it, I will admit
tbh I'm mostly worried that the characters will get butchered
For all we know, the show might be canceled before it airs, like the graphic novel
and that existing lore will be altered/forgotten
why would that happen?
I assume the same people who wrote the existing lore would be writing the series
To make it more appealing to a variety of audiences? Idk
and so far, they've done a good job keeping things consistent
I think i read somewhere that the rights have been sold to an external company though?
I haven't heard that
ah, lets hope it's not true xD
the news about the animated series comes from the LinkedIn page of the President of Activision-Blizzard Studios
it does use the term "sold", but in this context it means selling the show to a platform (like Netflix) so they can run it, not selling the rights
I don't mind if they don't, as long as the voices are close enough
it wouldn't be the same if they didn't have the original voices
but I believe most of the actors have worked in animation before
I mean the only one I'm worried about is Ana
Isn't she based in Cairo?
Andrea Toyias talked about it at a Blizzcon panel
Get a glimpse into the wide, wild world of creating memorable character voices. Team up with some of your favorite Overwatch cast members for a lively discussion of how they help breathe life into the game’s diverse roster of heroes.
Time: 2:30PM - 3:30PM PDT (4:30AM - 5:30AM...
also Aysha Selim has experience in animation - she does Arabic dubbing for Disney
(this panel also has my favourite bit with Sahr Ngaujah being absolutely chilling at 43:00)
do we know who is operating that giant helix vehicle in temple of anubis?
there's a picture of ana as shrike inside it
and you can see that same vehicle moving in the direction of the necropolis
was pharah there by any chance?
possibly
is there a place where I can find all of the in-game textures, sprays, etc?
pharah has the same hieroglyph spray as in the temple of anubis
hmm.. what requirements do i have to fit in roder to post pictures in this channel? would've been easier
ok
anywya, this is what the full picture int he temple loks like:
if the winged person represents Pharah, then the man and the woman would be Ana and Soldier
some people have suggested that the three figures on the right are Ana, Soldier and Reaper
interesting
doens't look much liek reaper, tbh
what's that thing on his head?
either way, ti's a reason to beleive that pharas is in the temple and she's tracking down ana
because someone from helix was. someone who has ana's picture on the table. and in the necropolis, you see that same helix vehicle moving towards the necropilis, judging by the tracks
she's also a wanted criminal
could be anyone in Helix looking for her, not just Pharah
I know, I'm jsut curious who it might be. this being pharah would've made it more interesting than some rando
and as far as we know, Pharah hasn't responed to Ana's letter
that doens't mean she doesn't have an interest in her
I love how in mercy’s short story, two dead people arrive in her apartment
And she’s just like ok
why would she own an arcade cabinet?
nothing particularly interesting or indicative of anything, then...
though there are statues in front of the vehicle which look identical to pharah's statue spray too
btw, I wonder about the relationship between ana and sam
since the devs stated that pharah chose to take her mother's last name. did they get a divorce or something?
She died
She came back as someone else in her eyes, someone who failed and needs to make amends
Ana doesn't wear her wedding ring anymore, but we don't know if that is because they're divorced or she just doesn't wear it
She didn’t want her family involved either through shame or stubbornness
But she sort of thinks of Sam the way Soldier thought of his boyfriend
Where she’s so deep that it just would be cruel to bring him in
So it’s not as much that she doesn’t love him, but she’s stopping herself from disrupting his life and her quest any further
Or she just hates him idrk
we don't know much about Ana's relationship with Sam
although I do hope they tell us at some point
she sent the letter to pharah but not to him. that's worrisome
I'd also like to know the family relationships of other heroes
how do Hana's parents feel about her being recruited into MEKA?
how did Mei's family react when they found out she was alive?
do any of the heroes have siblings we don't know about?
that fox lady planned for ow2 might be a relative of hanzo and genji
why, because her description sounds like a ninja? that's racist
tbh I would rather have more heroes from new countries
I just want to know about family for background/worldbuilding purposes
because kitsunes are mostly a japanese myth
everything about her character as far as we know it screams "japanese"
the description said it looked like a fennec fox
those are from the desert
"everything we know" is a fennec-like fox companion and a weapon with 4 blades
hm... is there any lore significance to the areas fennecs are common in?
I agree that another japanese character would be boring
from the Game Informer article describing some silhouettes shown off to the press
Ah
The hero that stood out the most, and I couldn't take my eyes off of, appeared to be a female with short hair. At her side and standing up to her knees was a fuzzy little critter with pointy ears and an equally pointy tail. It looked like a fennec fox, but with longer ears and a more aggressive stance. The hero of note wielded a giant four-sided weapon, which is somewhat similar to the shuriken used by Yuffie in Final Fantasy VII, but much thicker.
who is the woman on the statue in volskaya industries? is that supposed to be a younger katya, or someone else?
not Katya
probably a representation of Mother Russia
didn't someone ask this recently?
idk, not me
I can't help but feel like this deal katya has with the omnics is going to backfire hard on her. what reasons could omnics have for selling her the technology intended to destroy them? those giant robots are going to wake up and turn against them at some point, most likely
Omnics aren't a hivemind
maybe the omnics that sold her tech want the war to end too
maybe the peaceful ones want the old omniums over and done with
not all omnics side will Null Sector
on Sombra's web, the omnic Katya made a deal with was connected to Numbani
the Numbani omnics could think the Siberian omnics need to chill
probably not the first person to find it, but in the Oasis University map there's a bunch of papers lying around. most are either blurry or in arabic, but there is one where the text is readable and in english. It says "Repairing degenerative genetic structures - draft". Looks like Moira is still working on a cure for Reaper.
Also, this paper is lying close to that weird, pulsating black ball. now that I look at it, it resembles wraithing reaper a little bit. not much though
interesting! where can I find it?
also, on the other side of the map, in the same spot mirroring the black ball, there's something that looks like some ancient piece of wall with text on it. Dr. Faisal mentioned that Talon has repeatedly robbed the excavation sites. Could it be that both the ball and the wall piece are from those sites?
hmm... the title mentions genetics and regeneration. so mercy';s and moira's research is about the same area of biology
Mercy was looking at being able to regenerate limbs
(inspired by Torbjorn losing his arm)
Moira was looking at repairing genetic degredation (possibly caused by Reyes' SEP conditioning)
hmm
no wonder they're kind of rivals
if that stone tablet came from the archeologicla sites, then the ball thing could also have come from that museum of omnic art. there were a lot of similarly moving, odd-shaped statues there
why would they be studying it?
people study pieces of art all the time
not in a scientific capacity
that too, actually
trying to find what exact materials were used to make it, how old they were, where they came from
if it was from Leonora's show, they could just ask her
maybe it wasn't enough. or something she discovered that looked neat, but moira saw a potential application in another area that Leonora wasn't knowledgeable enough to think of
for example, a lot of scientific discoveries were made while working on movies
such as the image of the black hole generated for interstellar, or the dinosaur walk for jurrasic park
we don't really know
I thought Reaper was kinda like Deadpool, in that he's constantly dying but also healing so he's in like, constant pain
He probably didn't fully regenerate
I think he's stuck in a state where he should be dying from his injuries but his body isn't letting him
yess! I love ashe
my guess is either they're just focused on OW2, so they haven't had the VAs in for recording
OR
they have recorded new lines, they just haven't added them yet
When were the last interactions out? Besides the karaoke lines. We have unused Sigma voicelines but the last ones were with Jesse and Ashe I think?
the last complete interactions were added after Wrecking Ball, since he has some with Tracer and Sombra
I expect them to add interactions when ow 2 is released
Does anyone else think talon and null sector will team up in ow2 you know the enemy of my enemy and all that
well if the end scene from Storm Rising is any indication, this invasion is only possible because Null Sector and Talon are teaming up
I'm wondering if Reaper joined up with Talon because there was some bigger threat.
If Reyes thought Overwatch might have been infiltrated by whatever this thing might be, with the Strike Commander refusing to believe Reyes, that might be enough for him to betray Overwatch. But that alone has too many holes in it.
based on what we know, I think Reyes turned on Overwatch because he felt like they abandoned him
when Blackwatch got exposed, Overwatch (not just Jack and Ana, but the directors above them like Petras) didn't take his side and basically left him at the mercy of the public
they also didn't (or couldn't) help him with his genetic issues, leading him to turn to Moira for help and become Reaper
That explains his animosity towards the leadership, but it's mentioned that he's taking out a bunch of former comrades. Unless he managed to get personal beef with almost everyone, that's at least a little strange.
It makes sense
there has to be something else to explain why he joined Talon
I'm about 70% certain that there's something really important that we don't have
The OW members he's taking out likely didn't support him
but that at least explains his hatred of Overwatch
Definitely something important we don't know about
Talon may simply have had the right resources
But for what? He isn't just employed by Talon, he's on the council.
Talon recognizes his skill
And DF would probably kick him out if his own personal goals conflicted too hard with DF's plan.
even if they dont all know who he is
I could see that for someone like Mauga, but Reaper has authority.
Reaper's goal of destroying Overwatch/killing former OW members goes well with DF's goal of pushing humanity's advancement with a global war
since OW would get in his way
Would it? I'd argue that Null Sector has a very real chance of winning without OW around in some form. If Reaper had won the Recall fight, no Newverwatch to contest the Null Sector attacks, and NS seems to be powerful to strike at multiple targets at once with at least similar power to what we saw in Rio or Paris(or wherever the place in Zero Hour was).
And DF wants humanity to evolve, not die.
it was Paris
maybe DF doesn't think Null Sector will win, but backs them so humanity has something to fight against
There's still a fairly large amount we don't know about
he's probably playing both sides - supporting Null Sector AND selling arms and mercenaries to human nations through Talon
