Well if they did, Im sure they'll still keep them in the game
Jeff said they could, but they have no plans to
Ok
like if Reaper dies that doesnt mean we cant play him anymore in PvP.
VA could still voice him
Probably just contain him, if he doesn't die after getting his body incinerated the best you can do is contain him
1 - If someone dies, they'll still be playable
2 - It is incredibly unlikely anyone is gonna die
Even if Blizz said they "could" do it
I feel that if anyone dies
Itll be someone of no consequence that can come back
Like Bastion or Orisa
Orisa has already died too.
Bastion is supposed to play a big role in ow2
Torb needs to give him a voice
make him act just like what's his face? from Apex Legends
It doesn't need a voice.
Yea
Its not necessary.
because it makes him less fun
Bastion being incapable of speech makes it unique, and gives it an extra cutesy appearance.
Bastion is more interesting without a voice
He has a unique “thing”
I feel like bastion is gonna get killed kr almost killed
removing it will make him more generic
aight well you guys are the experts so u right
like i said just a funny idea
like a scene where Torb experiments on him with a voice but it keeps screwing up so Torbs like "eh nvm".
I just think that'd be funny.
adds humor
sure
I wonder if Bastion will really have a big part in OW2 or if Jeff was just messing with that interviewer
that interview seemed like kinda of a meme anyway
yeah
omg an agreement in this chat?
jk
just most interviews usually are when it comes to Jeff
we agree plenty
ive never seen it. but im not on here all the time so idk
oh - in case anyone isn't aware, the release date for The Hero of Numbani is now June 2
instead of May
aw
Hero of Numbani???
according to the Amazon listing
A comic? Novel?
it's the first OW novel
written by an award winning YA novelist known for writing afrofuturism, so it should be good
she also has a background in computer programming
that will be interesting
not my favourite characters, but the author sounds good
and it will still give us some detail about the world and history
it's a good idea to start with someone as relatively unimportant as Orisa
if the novel bombs, the main story remains untouched
if it's successful, then they can do more
doomfist is the main antagonist, so giving him some depth is critical
ooh that sounds cool, i'd like to see more talon stuff
though I don't suppose the novel will feature his POV very often
when's it supposed to release?
June 2
now I'm wondering how are they going to meet doomfist of all people
unless he noticed efi's talent and wants to recruit her
Doomfist has a connection to Numbani already
and Orisa was built specifically to counter Doomfist
i think trying to recruit efi would be sorta dumb, considering orisa was built anti-doom
not orisa? the original robots whose parts were used to build her
I was readin the description, involves Lucio too
that's good
Efi saw Doomfist destroy the airport, and was inspired to build a new defender for Numbani that could protect against him
oh, interesting
yeah
it's all in Orisa's origin trailer
plus talon probably already have a bunch of smart people, so far they've managed to recruit some pretty powerful people so a child probably wouldn't make the list
I'm new in fandom. I've seen like 20 shorts in a day, so I forget details
ah
you're good :> there's a lot of stuff to read and watch
yeah. especially since some lore is in hard to reach places. hence why it's so awesome that you guys have it all collected
like those news articles
we do what we can
i found a post of reddit that was extremely helpful a while ago, it was a big and updated timeline because last i checked the ow wiki wasn't updated
I've been working on my own timeline
sweet!
they will, with OW2
not weird when you're new
i mean there's nothing wrong with that, but they create cliffhangers for past events and then never move them forwards
i havent even been here since the very beginning but im already so hyped to go forward that it feels surreal that theyre finally moving on from when winston pushed that button
if you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend watching this panel
In this 2017 GDC session, Blizzard's Michael Chu explains how a team-based multiplayer shooter went from a simple idea: "a world worth fighting for," and ended up with the sprawling story of Overwatch.
GDC talks cover a range of developmental topics including game design, pr...
it's from 2017, but its Michael Chu talking about their design and worldbuilding
looks interesting, thanks!
yeah i joined the fandom in like, may, lol
I also keep a lot of lists, so if you ever need a source for something, I gotchu
awesome! 😚 what sorts of lists do you have?
Aside from their lists of developer comments or dates, you can find all the shorts, comics, and blog posts in pins.
I feel like I probably promote myself too much around here 😳
oh, i see
heh, from what little I've seen, you're very knowleadgeable about the lore, so don't feel bad for promoting yourself
you've mentioned the lsit of developer comments. I'm interested in that, since it's not something easy to find
also, aside form the hero of numbani, is there anything else planned for 2020?
a list of all of Michael Chu's lore-related tweets and forum comments
awesome, thansk!
the links for the old forums no longer work, unfortunately
would it be ok if I cross-post it to another server(with credit)? some of my friends are fans of overwatch and would enjoy this
sorry for that little fight I got into a few days ago
For more information about the game, please refer to the wiki: https://overwatch.gamepedia.com/
Gamepedia is generally better.
you're just passionate
passionate is good
you just need to read up on the lore more, and remember that sources are your friends
sure, will do!
and if you have any questions, the regulars here are pretty knowledgeable
I do have one question. I'm working on a theory about junkrat's treasure and I came across a video that talks about the junkertown map. there's apparently one secret spot that can only be opened by two players standing on two special places. inside this secret spot there's a small and not very impressive stack of valuables. the youtuber who made the video speculated that this is junkrat's hidden treasure, but the valuables inside the hiding spot aren't half as impressive as the payload filled with gold that junkrat and roadhog gathered in their world heist, so I don't see roadhog continuing to serve junkrat for 50% of what's in that hidden spot. and if he's never seen it, then why would junkrat create a hiding place that requires 2 people to open, when he was still all by himself? what are your thoughts on this?
that's probably just a stash they saved for themselves out of the treasure they stole for their boom trolley
it's in Roadhog's house, so its definitely not Junkrat's treasure
oh, good point
my theory is that his "treasure" is really information - in the bones of the omnium, he discovered why the omniums woke back up after being shut down all those years ago
torbjorn seemed surprised that bastion gained sentience
he knows people will pay for that sort of information, he just needs to find the right buyer
I wonder if the robot have ever been created sentient, or whether this is something that humans don't fully understand
Thanks for the Book of Chu Doc! ♥️
you're welcome
he hasn't said much lately, probably because the community keeps threatening him and being absolute trash
ouch, that sucks
Yeah, or on a more positive note - maybe he just can't tell because of OW2 :x
I think that over time they (Bastion, Zenyatta, Orisa, omnics in general) over time start to create their own personality from the world around them- we dont know What It Is but it does exist I hope that in OW2 maybe Zen can give us that Wise Robot Knowledge about the iris and how omnics have souls
Souls are probably not real
I like the theory that everyone misunderstands the Iris
I'd say it falls under the realm of spirituality and mysticism. The Shambali interpretation of Omnic Souls is probably not real.
As for the Iris
I like the theory that its a passive observer
And that both Sombra and the Shambali witnessed it and interpreted it differently.
If you go ask launch kit Reaper, everyone has souls
Those werent cannon
The fact that they were in the game at all at least implies some form of being, doesn’t it?
yes
How does Reaper like suck the life out of his victims?
So it’s not exactly life essence as she makes it seem, rather just a cell reconstructor
Life Steal isn’t canon yet, but his shotgun’s do have some sort of deteriorating effect on whoever they hit
That is interesting though, I remember there was that line in his bio that said that his victims looked like husks or something, and that definitely implies there is a concept similar to stealing someone's life "essence"
@worthy rose He doesn't "suck" the life out his victims
His shotguns have necrotic rounds.
That prevent recovery.
Which is what leaves the victims looking like husks
We’ve not seen him recover health in combat or slurp up life goop outside of the game
if you've ever seen necrotic flesh (dont google it), you'll know why that's bad
I must've missed that, thanks for the answer
I always wonder what that bio meant with that line about lifeless husks
what was developed by Moira?
Reapers supposedly necrotic rounds
Unless weapons already exist that cause necrosis?
no idea
it can be caused by infection, so maybe they're laced with a biological agent
True, could it be a weaponised virus/bacteria?
Surely those would exist in the overwatch universe
I wanna see a bike race between Ashe, Roadhog, and Tracer
Even tho it would never happen itd be cool
It’s my own head canon that Reaper’s shotguns are actually firing his own ghastly cells as ammunition, as he naturally replenishes them and can control his cells as gas it seems plausible to an extent
There is an undoubted connection between them though
Whether it’s correlated, or off of Reaper’s artistic mind, is unclear
It's a reasonable take
But I'd guess it's mostly regular bullet things, just "corrupted"
It could easily be Reaper thinking, “Well I degenerate and it causes me strife, so I want my weapons to do something similar” he seems like the poetic type
I think it’s just got a bacterial or viral agent that spreads into the target
It could be, but Reaper probably chose it deliberately to mirror his condition
He also has unlimited ammo during Death Blossom so they are definitely supernatural
Well actually unlimited ammo in general
Have we seen him reload? I’ll have to rewatch recall
You can see that in all the cinematics he appears in
He does the same thing in the Sombra one at the end
i still think its a stylistic choice that shouldnt be looked into
wouldnt want them to toss out ideas like that for the sake of realism
It’s also worth noting that his guns don’t disappear when he gets electrocuted, so they may be only tied to him consciously
As in he can wraith certain objects with him
So far I think it’s just been his clothes, weapons, and that hacky thing from Recall
Oh and comms
it's that scifi concept where things work because the story needs them to
best not to worry about it
I guess
in my head canon he throws them down and they fade back into the same material he's made of, so he can just reform them when he makes new ones but idk how true that'd be
did humans create the AI in omnics? Efi created orisa, but she used parts of the original robots built around the omnic crisis era. torbjorn designed bastions, but he was surprised when he met one of them with a mind of its own. Chu also clarified that the AI in hammond's ball is very simplistic compared to omnic ai. and the historical blurbs about the omnic corporation makes it sound like the robots were just regular machines, and they "woke up" so to speak seemingly on their own, years after the factories were shut down. so do we know of any omnic that was specifically designed to have sentience?
they were designed to be learning programs
eventually they just learned to think for themselves
hm. if junkrat's "treasure" is really information about how the omnic crisis came to be, it could be that it's specifically information of how omnics became self-aware.
because it's really suspcious that machines would all randomly gain sentience at the same time. and we've seen some robots like anubis, able to mass-control many omnics. it could be that there was originally one sentient machine, and the omnic crisis was a result of that one machine's control over other omnics. it's also possible that after the company was shut down, some of the scientists who used to work there continued to experiment in secret in the abandoned factories.
we dont know if it was all at once or one by one
I know that zenyatta was built 10 years after the omnic crisis. but do we know whether the parts used to build him were all new, or also dating mack to the omnic crisis?
I think we'll learn more about omnics and the omniums in OW2, through Null Sector
particularly if we end up getting a Null Sector hero
that'd be awesome
I hope so!
I really want to find out about the omnic crisis from the other side
Me too
were there omnic civilians? omnics who sided with the humans? humans who sided with the omnics?
I want too know about other omnic's pov's of the crisis
Do they support itz
it?*
or do they want peace?
Bob presumably was around back then
that's true
wonder if civilian omnics would have been treated simlar to american-japanese people in ww2
that's what I'm thinking
Have any new hero looks been released yet? I want to see more than just the ones we got in the trailers and Bastion and Torb
nope
Wait so is Olivia Colomar confirmed to be Sombra's name?
Because the career profile picture for Sombra's Talon skin is called "Colomar"
Late to the party but the idea of Reapers guns being tied to him somehow is actually kinda cool- i hope they elaborate in the future about his condition and the things he can do besides just reappear and disappear
Can we assume that at least 5% of omnecs aren’t sentient?
What about the waiter at the oasis restaurant?
he's an omnic
What about the bastion units, I don’t think they were sentient at the time
They were just following programming
I’m probably just being stupid
Sorry
Sentient, adjective: having the power of perception by the senses; conscious.
Okay
Bastions still have senses
Okay, thanks for clarification
What do you consider civilian omnics? The humanoid ones? Because they were not "civilians" in the strict way of speaking during the first Omnic Crisis - and the monks like Zenyatta had their awakening after the Crisis was over.... (philosophy this early in the morning abiut sentient robots )
civilians as in, non combatants
cashiers and waiters and nanny bots
did they exist during the crisis?
it's true Zen is olny 20 years old.... (that's why we need Zen lore or related worldbuiling around him!)
Basically slave work
"Built To Serve"
Oh good point yes
He definitely was. Ashe is 39 and we see a flashback of her as a little girl with Bob.
Wait no, she wasn't that little
She was little in the scene where it's her birthday and her parents aren't there. Neither is Bob.
The fact that he left with her suggests that he was her personal butler, not just her whole family's. So the fact that he's missing on her birthday would suggest that he wasn't around at the time.
Mccree was 17 or younger when they started their gang, so that was 20 years ago. She would've been 19 then. Her hair is longer in the scene at the police station vs the scene with Bob, so some time must've passed. Looks like she got him when she was in her teens, so this would be very shortly after the omnic crisis.
We saw Bob when she was a teenager
The crisis would have been ongoing at that point
Therefore, Bob was around since before the crisis
Didn't it end 30 years ago?
That's when it started
Its end is ~25 years ago, give or take a couple
It's also worth mentioning omnics did exist before the crisis
Omnics were made by omniums before they shut down
Weren't they declared a disappointment at that time? And omniums closed years before the crisis
Disappointment because of output numbers
Likewise, the war machines were created during the crisis. Things likr Titans or Bastions weren't Omnic designs, and were weaponized.

Bob would have to have been a second-hand purchase if he was produced by the original omnic corporation
I believe Overwatch is Back had the background on Omnica
I doubt a rich family would buy a second-hand robot. He must've been built either during or after the crisis, not before
Why not before? We see her before without Bob, and during with Bob
Meaning Bob was acquired between those two points in time
Unless he was simply offscreen in the first image, but let's roll with the assumption that he was not there.
This means he was either purchased during the war against his race, or before the war.
Not after
And given the context, during is incredibly unlikely
I would throw my hat into the theory that Bob was simply off screen
But whether or not that holds, Bob most likely was the Ashe family butler before the crisis, with the remaining unlikely chance being he was acquired during the crisis
I doubt bob would leave her alone on her birthday, unless he wasn't "hers" originally
Could be he was given to her when she got the official sucessorship
sucessorship?
Rich families in fiction sometimes have the children fight eachother to see who will become the successor
Exactly
if she had siblings maybe she wouldn't have been so lonely
Wouldnt be the first time a solo child had to prove themselves in fictional rich families (like trials)
her parents didn't care that much
they left her to fend for herself in the care of their omnic butler
!!loreHeroes ashe
To learn more, please visit https://playoverwatch.com/en-us/heroes/ashe#story
mostly leaving her in the care of the family’s omnic butler, Bob
Two key words there
Mostly
And family's
I'm sure her parents came home once or twice a year between their business meetings and may have made eye contact with their daughter occasionally as they passed in the halls of their unnecessarily large home
hm, looks like Bob really was there from the start
also "But a chance meeting with a local ruffian, named Jesse McCree, and an impromptu string of crimes committed together opened her eyes to her true calling."
but the dev said they used to be childhood friends?
unless the "string of crimes" was a gradual thing, before they founded a gang
also, I wonder what happened to the other two co-founders
"Her principles: keep your word, don’t work with the law, respect each other’s territory, and always punish betrayal." I like how mccree broke all 4 of these 😂
she was 19, that's adulthood everywhere in the world
They met as teens
she was 19 when McCree got busted by Overwatch
He was arrested when she was 19
they met years before that
I just foundout that echo used to be called "iris" early in development
does that hint at her connection to the shambali?
we'll have much more info when she's actually in the game and they give us an origin story
and a bio
would be nice if they put out origin story videos for the heroes that didnt have them at launch, when OW2 drops
doubt it though
yeah
origin trailers for the rest of the launch heroes has been on the top of my wishlist
DIdn't they told us they wrote origin stories for all heroes? I'm sure I heard it somewhere....
And the Tracer origin story isn’t on the official website/YouTube 😦
It’s a shame
huh? hoe did it find its way to the internet then?
it was shown at Blizzcon 2015? I think
someone recorded it
Both are great !
unrelated, but in some of the videos I saw screenshots of the cancelled graphic novel. where can i find them all?
I think there's only 2-3 pages out there
the most notable thing about the comic that would have caused problems if it had been published was Reinhardt
First Strike is set during the omnic crisis, which is ~30 years ago
yet in the comic he looked like he does now
rather than how he looks in Honor and Glory
Makes it seem like he’s 90
xD
I do like the design for Gabrielle Adawe
she's like the Amanda Waller of Overwatch
also, in the finished art Torbjorn has his claw arm
but he doesn't lose his arm until after the crisis
First Strike would have changed a lot
it's good that they cancelled it, but I wish they had replaced it with something else
apparently, there was a girl on the cover of the graphic novel, which may or may not be Liao
and someone pointed out that she looks like a scientist, not a soldier
if Liao died in the war against the omnics, and they were a scientist, then it would explain that line Soldier says to Mei, about war not being a place for scientists
That's a fair idea, but I would think he is just saying that line in general, not in reference to anything other than being suprised at a scientist fighting on the front lines
Isnt Liao male?
Every concept or idea of Liao (that I've seen) has been that one guy kneeling down on the picture of the original overwatch team
it was confirmed that that guy isn't Liao
at SDCC 2016
we don't know anything about Liao except their name - we don't know age, gender, ethnicity (we can guess Chinese based on the name, but they could be Taiwanese, or a Chinese expat)
personally, I will be disappointed if Liao isn't female, because that makes Ana the only woman among the Overwatch founders
Isnt Mercy in that photo? And kinda to her right is another woman who's name I dont know
Or am I looking at the wrong picture tf
Yes that one
these are not the founders of Overwatch
Mercy is visiting from university, Pharah is a child, and McCree was newly recruited
the man on the left is unknown and the woman on the right is Sojourn
I had a feeling that was Sojourn but I want sure because of the hair
the 6 founders are Ana Amari, Jack Morrison, Gabriel Reyes, Reinhardt Wilhelm, Torbjorn Lindholm and Liao
Oh ok.
Is it possible for Hammond to see Winston againz
possibly
Hammond would probably hear about Overwatch returning in the news, and Winston would be front and center in any story about Overwatch
And will Hammond have any part of overwatch 2?
maybe
I'm hoping we get to see every hero in the story mode, even if it's just for a single mission
same with me
Instead of just "Winston and co save the day"
at Blizzcon they said not every hero will be part of story missions

but they will all be playable in Hero missions
At least they're in hero missions then. Maybe we can see them in updates if they ever update the pve side of things
also, how is Lucio going to be such a vital part in ow 2 even though they didn't establish any "lore" before they announced ow 2 at blizzcon
just canon
what do you mean?
during the announcement, the devs didn't really mention lucio's reasoning with joining overwatch other then he wanted to defend his home town Rio
it's hard to explain
also, how will Vishkar respond to what happened in Rio?
Yep, and I imagine there isn't exactly a sign up process for joining up too. Seems like more of a group than an organisation now
That's a good question, it might depend on if Talon has any involvement with Null Sector at the time which I think they do? Not sure
I say that since there is still Sanjays involvement with Talon. I think that was his name at least
also, i want to know more about this "security" air force thing pharah's working with
Helix Security International is an international security firm that takes security contracts from governments
oh ok
they ran the security for Doomfist's prison and the former Overwatch watchpoints in America that Soldier raided
lol
Talon is not running Blizzardworld
explain then
Moira doesn't have any books in Blizzardworld, and Sombra isn't the only one on the scoreboard
Soldier and Junkrat are also on there
Symmetra, Genji, Torbjorn have World of Warcraft skins
Orisa has a StarCraft skin
or they just reused the books on a different map
instead of making a new texture
okay? what does that have to do with Blizzardworld?
the prison was not in Numbani
there is no evidence of Talon being involved with Blizzardworld
yes, like any theme park
the secret door on Blizzardworld is a reference to Club 33

not using disguises?
they were in costumes
Talon has no need for an amusement park
they have plenty of money
but why?
that seems pointless
that doesn't sound like Talon at all
Still sounds like Talon, right?
what audience?
Hollywood has no lore
Blizzardworld is just a fun map to celebrate Blizzard's games
it's not important
Wouldn't suprise me if Blizz world isn't even canon
It's the equivalent of Blazkowicz playing Wolfenstein
I doubt we'll see Blizz world have any story significance in OW2, but I can see them fitting in Hollywood maybe
VIP needs escorting or something
Do tell, i'm curious if there's anything past "Angry omnic berates cowboy named Jesse"
On the Overwatch 2 website theres a section that says "New Factions Arise", we know about about NS and Talon but what other threats could Overwatch face?
helix
Junkers perhaps too
whatever conspiracy sombra is trying to decode, but idk if we'll see that so soon
i think that'll be more of a gradual thing
with a big reveal at the end
I could see the los muertos being potential enemies too, suppose it depends on how much enemy diversity then can have
So what would a los muertos assassin equivalent be for example
Los Muertos aren't global enough
That's true, and I guess they wouldn't want to make them for just one map either
the amount of work it would take for so many different enemies and abilities and animations and movesets would greatly impact how much diversity they can have there. considering how early in development they seemed at blizzcon, and how soon the game appears to be coming, i wouldnt hype myself up for insane amounts of gameplay content - i'd look forward to the narrative more
Yeah, i'm of the same opinion when it comes to being excited for the story more. I do think Null sector needs some kind of Assassin/disabler unit though to shake gameplay up a bit
weren't there more units in the concept art than there were in the gameplay? they even said the mission shown isnt final
!!shitposting @upper arrow
@upper arrow Shitposting will result in a loss of access.
epic, bye
Well, that was un-neccassary
if you have any actual evidence for Talon running Blizzard World, I'm all ears
but you don't
because there isn't any
your "proof" was that there were books on Blizzard World that Moira also has, and that Sombra hacked the scoreboard
those books are found on several maps not related to Talon
and Sombra hacks a lot of things that have nothing to do with Talon
Where did you say the books were in Blizz world again?
I meant area wise sorry. Like, first point, gift shop, attacker spawn?
If you don't know the name that's fine, just want to look for myself is all.
it's in the last area
it's also found on Paris, which has nothing to do with Talon
Oh, is that the Moira book then? Didn't even think it had anything to do with her
a copy of it is found in the Genetics lab on Oasis
which I guess links it to Moira, but she's not the only one who uses that lab
Ah I see now, that's why we're apparently linking that book to Moira then. Yeah I doubt she would just go to a theme park and leave her book on display for all too see, more than likely just an asset re-used like you said
the book is also found elsewhere on the Oasis map, in the library-like area outside the lab
Alright, hope we can put that theory to rest then
Did yeeters just call you 13 even tho you're like 30 something (I think im pretty sure that's what you said once)
yeah, I'm used to it
People use insults when they run out of evidence
This, but replace "god" and "starship" with "Talon" and "theme park" https://s3.amazonaws.com/s3.mp-cdn.net/e2/24/2c27e57b3febf20f8ad9b1dc27a9-does-god-need-a-starship.jpg
I saw the gameplay of Overwatch 2 the other day and it feels like another Archives event but better graphics and longer campaign.
Though it would be Max running the joint
Not Doomfist
@worthy rose Its based on Archives
But meant to be enhanced and refined
@frosty shell If Talon were to run Blizzard World, it makes for a good front.
Fabricating guests is probably one of the easiest ways to launder.
Not to mention the countless restaurants and stalls that also make for good laundering within the park
Other than a Casino, its probably the optimal front
That being said
I dont think Talon owns Blizzardworld
Hopefully OW 2 is not just Lucio, Mei, Brig, Mercy, Rein, and Tracer. I want to play a mode where it shows the start of Talon, more Blackwatch lore, and how the Deadlock gang formed.
it probably won't be many historical missions
unless they do Archives in OW2
they said they want to progress the story forward
An Archives event in OW2 doesn’t sound bad, just hope they’ll add more to it than just killing Talon troops and Null Sector omnics. But yes if it’s more story wise, I guess the origins of each hero, comics, and maybe a movie will be used for historical lore.
Yeah I do get that Blizzard World could be used for money laundering
Or that Talon might have its fingers in so much that they just happen to be involved in Blizzard World
There is no such thing as a bad source of inspiration
Guillermo del Toro is currently making a movie based on a reddit post
never said anything else pretty much
Weak writing and weak prose
Is Blizzard world even canon in the lore? I thought its was just made for fun
Yeah, it’s canon
I think it’s unlikely we’ll ever see it in a piece of lore-media, but the devs said things about it that implies it’s canon
It’s as canon as Ray

What if they made a minceraft type thing where Winston says something different on the loading clip?
But no one would ever watch and know about it
that would be a lot of effort for something nobody would notice
I wouldn’t put it past Jeff to just meme the whole community like that
As he laughs in his edgy dad sweatshirt
Do you think there’s going to be a comic dump for OW2 or something?
that would be nice
I'll make a list in a bit
Of who I predict will ve playable when
Confirmed Playable:
Rio - Tracer, Mei, Rein, Lucio
Gothenburg - Brig, Rein, Torb, Bastion
India - Genji
All but confirmed:
India - Zenyatta
Somewhere - Mercy, Echo, Sojourn, Winston
Map Dependant or Late Joiners:
Busan - D.Va
Numbani - Orisa
Somewhere - Baptiste
Talon Story, Bosses, or something else:
- Doomfist, Reaper, Widow, Sombra, Moira
Helix Enemy or Deserter:
- Pharah
Not in the story:
Ana, Ashe, Junkrat, McCree, Roadhog, Sigma, Soldier, Hammond, Zarya
Then there is all your new heroes that can appear variably
I still think McCree will be featured in the story, based on what they said about finding out what his other business was
Ana and Soldier might have some missions, if any of the new heroes are people they team up with
ditto for Junkrat and Roadhog, although less likely
They did say not everyone will appear
So I am keeping the removals broad
I think Ana/Soldier will be localized entirely within external media
Until some post launch content
I just hope OW 2 won't be as weak as the plot of Burning Crusade and Warlords of Draenor. Which were both helmed by Michael Chu
Fair concern, but i wouldn't start blasting Michael just yet
As much as i'd love to see Sigma in the story, it'll probably be difficult to introduce him since he could probably take on the entirety of Winstons group by himself if he wanted I bet. Well, if Talon told him too at least
Actually thinking about it, I wonder if Sigma would recognise Winston since I think he said he worked with Harold Winston at some point, or at least knew him
Neither of them were helmed by Michael Chu. Chris Metzen helmed BC, and WoD was helmed by Alex Afrasiabi
@weak granite
Sorry, Alex Afrasiabi
Hes proven to be nothing but an uninspired writer. Anything good in Overwatch is a product of him drawing out from pop culture references or Alyssa Wang carrying him.
Poor and uninspired
Where did this come from all of a sudden?
Chu is responsible for the story post-Chris Metzen.
Which is pretty much everything post launch
Or at least everything post-ARG
Which was around when Metzen retired
this dvamain person is just there to spit on Michael Chu writting.... can anyone just thow them out already?
Michael Chu's writing credits are in Diablo 3
I don’t understand why everyone stomps on Chu, I actually like most of the newer cinematics and characters if he even has anything to do with them
The things that he has directly written are usually seen as poor.
It’s only the short story’s that could use some work, but they’re already improving and they are the least entertainment based anyways
As in, the comics and short stories with his name as the author
He's better as a story designer than a direct writer.
I don’t have any problems with any of the comics personally, and I would only read the short story’s for the lore anyway, it could just be an encyclopedia and I’d read it
i think there is like 2 parts where they stomp Chu: the alledgely "retcons" and his writing style, which can be simple
Fair
The retcons are minimal at best tho, and are more like rephrases than actual changes
the comics with his name on them are some of the better ones
it's his short stories that are weak
My favorite was Reflections
I really liked that. It gave us a view on the heroes outside of being just heroes
That was the christmas holiday one, wasn't it?
Retribution, Masquerade and Uprising are my favorites
Only one I dislike is Pharahs, bit bland compared to the rest. Still has some good plot details though
my least favourite is Searching
I’m not a fan of dragon slayer
And the main reason his short stories seem weaker is in comparison to Alyssa's
Searching's definitely the worst in terms of making sense
But structure-wise I don't think it's that bad
Wasted Land feels like the least necessary one IMO
Seeing Hog and Rat teaming up is big but not much happens
Wasted Land was to show us how Roadhog met Junkrat
Yeah
Which was a nice story to hear but most of the other comics felt slightly more interesting
Searching does accomplish quite a bit - it follows up on the stinger from Dorado (even if it does change the context of what Zarya says), shows Zarya bumping into Sombra, and shows her opinions on Omnics and Volskaya get tested
and introduce Junkertown
That too I guess
and it introduces Bruce, who might be important if my theory is true
Rude
we haven't even said any theories
we're discussing the lore
!!shitposting @upper arrow
@upper arrow Shitposting will result in a loss of access.
That shows you're a troll
you haven't even heard the theory
You didn't even check to see if there was a theory
You just saw the word and said "that theory makes no sense"
What's your theory? I don't recall it
I'm not saying it's not bad backstory
It just felt like the most forgettable comic
(Though the Bruce foreshadowing I agree was nice)
so my theory is that Bruce knows his identity and vouched for him to the queen
Yeah that could make him important
that's the only way I can think of that the Junkers, who are paranoid and hate omnics, would allow this unidentified mech driver to compete

Which of the comics are the most plot-important overall?
👍
the rest of the comics are either history, fluff pieces or character development

I would say the only ones that are essentials are
Old Soldiers, Binary, and Masquerade.
While Binary is just character development
Its an important enough difference to make it worth reading
forgot about that one
binary is important to read for overwatch 2 but i think torb might explain in game
maybe
The rest are just flavour
Those 3 are the important ones.
You can never read it and know what's going on
Hell, 5 of them are prequels/backstory
how about the shorts? I'd say Recall, Infiltration, Reunion and Zero Hour are the important ones

Reunion is like Binary - not really necessary, but it helps explain things that will come up in OW2
I guess overall
Must read/watch:
- Recall
- Zero Hour
- Masquerade
Explain Characters:
- Reunion
- Binary
- Old Soldiers
- Valkyrie
Potentially Important:
- Dragons
- What You Left Behind
- Infiltration (and to a lesser extent, Searching)
The rest is secondary.
Secondary not a note on quality. There are some great things like The Last Bastion or Going Legit in there.
But they're all either minor stories or backstory
right
The potential list could also include Destroyer if I thought Sven had a chance of being in launch OW2.
I'd like him to return
But he's incredibly unlikely
Infiltration/Searching rely on Russia making an appearance.
I don't think the missions in overwatch are 100% non-canon. There's the mission where you deliver a payload in Junkertown, and that payload is obviously the same one that Junkrat and Roadhog tried to deliver in canon. Sure, they never succeeded, but the attempt has canonically been made. You also have Ashe's payload in Route 99 mission. We were also told that in the Hollywood mission, we are escorting an Omnic, who became a target for extremists, which I also believe to be canon, even if it was done by other people in the canon.
to give you a comparison - in wow lore, every dungeon and raid was done by a different group of adventurers, but they have all been done by someone at some point canonically, even though the player characters and their adventures aren't canon to the lore.
why I think it matters - in king's row mission we are delivering a bomb to kill the omnics hiding underground. Now the Null Sector, which had previously been hiding underground in king's row, has launched a worldwide invasion. What if the bomb was the motive? the final straw?
to give you a comparison - in wow lore, every dungeon and raid was done by a different group of adventurers, but they have all been done by someone at some point canonically, even though the player characters and their adventures aren't canon to the lore.
like in elder scrolls games, someone did become the leader of the thieves guild or the mages collage but it wasnt the main character
yup
a lot of game use that to prevent confusion
Every map has some canon setting - but your’e obviously not playing the canon story.
That’s only in the Archives right now.
Though some Elder Scrolls stuff is shared by the main character
Im pretty sure the Hero of Kvatch who saves Cyrodil ends up becoming Sheogorath.
As for OW maps
The ideas behind the maps have canon root
But they don't progress past that too much
Or at least, the payload maps
We know that Junkertown and Route 66 don't make it past the first point
One can argue that Hanamura/Volskaya are Dragons/Infiltration
Dorado is supposed to be during the ARG
Or just immediately after we overload the powerplant
And we gotta deliever a new core
Numbani had progression
Doomfist took the gauntlet at the point before it was delievered to the museum
The new payload is probably not contested on its trip to the museum
To nane a few
I would think that the Kings Row mission would fail and Hollywood would succeed
But we don't know who was there for those
But a point with Numbani or Gibraltar is
The resistance can br non-canon too
I don't see there realistically being resistanxe to the Efi exhibit. We should find out fir sure in the book
And Winston had none with his delivery of the satellite to broadcast Recall
Though some Elder Scrolls stuff is shared by the main character
the main story and 2 dlcs are always canon
Michael Chu teasing us Liao on tweeter I'm dying - I want OW2 already 😭 https://twitter.com/westofhouse/status/1221136207469395968?s=20
Yes!
if we have ow do we get ow2 for free
no
can we have a british map that isnt london
probably not
Is overwatch 2 a separate game or an expansion
i hope we see talon and overwatch working together against the omnics
and a story mode
Talon is siding with Null Sector
b ru h
i dont care for any talon member tbf except sombra
does sombra even care about talon?
will that like
turret thing
with the 4 guns
be a new hero?
and will be get null sector heroes
that's already a skin for orisa
do you mean this?
Liao is one of the six founders of Overwatch
along with Ana, Soldier, Reaper, Torbjorn and Reinhardt
i know this is stupid but
idk if we will see ana or soldier or reaper
like i was thinking cause of progression of time and stuff
what if they died?
it's only a year between OW and OW2
Do you mean in general, or tied to OW2
tied to ow2
i wish there were new maps tbf
ik there are but like
i dont like route 76 being used again
paris is fine its fairly new
like fully new maps
For your first question, there isn't that much new info about Talon far as i'm aware
Toronto, Gottenburg, Monte Carlo
omg i am hyped for monte carlo
i want that map
the graphics look so good now
its a breath of fresh air
andddd
toronto
im going to be honest
it looks more proffesional now
and more
well
futuristic
toronto looks nice
gothenburg looks nice
but i wish they shook the maps up more
like same countries but instead of route 66 we could have maybes
New Orleans
or miami
or las vegas
i havent seen rio but ik it exists
it also looks less blank now
like some spaces in overwatch didnt have alot of detail
@peak escarp but hey
its only new
so we cant make judgements uet
right
I believe one of the potential new heroes was said to be a beastmaster, from those silhouettes the guy had looked at
possibly
did zenyetta have any new changes
Balance wise no, design wise we're still waiting to see.
he'll get a redesign, as will all the heroes
I quite like it myself
im fine with all the changes they made to her but i think her original hair is a bit too iconic to change
it'd be like changing tracer's hair
are we losing some heroes too?
not a big deal though, i like it overall, and we can still use the original skins
hopefully ana hasnt died of old age
oh
Reinhardt and Sigma are older
Story wise he's one of my favourites, even though he doesn't have that much to begin with
Athena?
also will brigitte and reinhardt be able to combine the shields like they did in the trialer
So do we know why Echo was in that train in the Reunion short?
she was in storage
my guess is that echo was created by someone, and that person abandoned her and she was just kinda tossed around
Echo’s design actually really reminds me of Vishkar and she has a lot of similarities with Sym color wise.
Don’t know if anyone else has brought that up tho
the similarity is coincidental
I mean two heroes that follow the same design pattern and use hard-light is a bit suspicious to me, but that’s just my 2c
the designers commented on it
they said it was coincidental, Echo has no connection to Vishkar
This isn't important but in Infiltration when Widowmaker tries to shoot Katya last minute she shoots her right earring and it breaks, later on in the short when Sombra is blackmailing Katya you can still see the broken earring, this isnt important just a good detail the artists hid in
it is a good detail
her broken earring also appears in the beginning of Searching, when she's talking to Zarya
At this rate, it'll end up being a weapon charm in 2
weapon charm?
Little dangly thing that hangs off your weapon, like in Rainbow six
I dont think Overwatch would add that
yeah it'd take redesigning most weapon models
more cosmetic customization would be nice, but i dont want it to go as far as the "when your custom player appears in a cutscene" meme
the charms aren't nearly to the same extent
yeah i know i just mean in general, customization would be nice but to an extent
as entertaining as seeing skins in cutscenes would be, I dont think they'll do that
they seem to be prerendered cutscenes
god no
not the story missions lol
i want that to be locked to whatever was canonically worn
Depends, Torbjorn might need his beachwear on for the invasion
Never know if it reaches the beach or not
he wouldnt wear beachwear on a mission
im pretty sure that was a joke
we don't do that here dot gif
mybad
nah it's fine lol
but yeah I doubt there will be custom ones
I wonder if they would add any new forms of cosmetics for OW2
announcer packs would be nice
when is overwatch 2 release date
i dont think its official yet
@lament prawn Nah Ima just make my tracer look like a drunken trapeze artist.
Maybe add a new weapon skin besides golden
Or a new way to spend competitive credits
Did they really confirm 5+ new heroes for OW 2? I saw it somewhere around here but can't find the actual source.
5+ heroes that we know will be heroes
new way to spend competitive credits
They've said that competitive credits were a mistake
You'll likely never see anything other than golden guns for them
That’s a shame, as it’s really the final frontier for me right now, besides just ranking up
Your motivation for comp should be the competitive environment
That being said
This is the lore channel
Comp is not lore.
Indeed
Do you think characters will have updated kits to go with their new outfits?
Like Torb upgrading Bastion and altering his weapons
No
Well, closest thing to what you're describing would be the pve skills, but that's about it I believe
@worthy rose they mentioned 4 silhouettes in the game informer article
plus Sojourn makes 5
I wonder if Liao indeed created Echo
Given that it could explain her possibly being voiced by actors of Asian descent twice
only one name among the credits is unaccounted for
Hojo Shin
the only unknown VAs in Zero Hour are Echo and the French officer
likewise, in the Reunion poster
the credits list Matt Mercer, Jennifer Hale and Lauren Tom
its possible that Echo was played by Lauren Tom in Reunion, then got recast for whatever reason and was voiced by Hojo Shin in Zero Hour
she did sound different in Zero Hour
This supernatural soap follows Charlotte Feldman, a young woman who must work from beyond to figure out how and why she died in order to avoid an eternity in purgatory. Based on the young adult novels by Suzy Cox.
See more of The Dead Girls Detective Agency, only on Snapchat...
This is Hojo Shin
At the time stamp
Character name: Kristen
At least
she sounds like she could be Echo
That's the one I found on IMDB
when the 2019 credits were posted on the forums people thought Erika Lindbeck was Echo
but Fio's VA is also unaccounted for in that list
Could be a different Hojo Shin than the one I posted
could be
but that's still 2 credits we dont have characters for (and are both most likely Echo)
Where did you find Zero Hour poster? It’s so cool!
That’s true- no one confirmed Echo VA
someone posted it on reddit, and the clean version was posted on another server
Ok thanks!
Lauren Tom has other work with Blizzard, and is an established TV VA
Hojo Shin (if its this Hojo Shin) is a newcomer
if they are both Echo, I wonder why she was recast
There is also the French cop, technically
Got a link to the new VAs in the credits forum post?
is that role big enough to get a name in the credits?
I don't believe Echo is Erica Lindbeck.
she could be Fio
Lindbeck is a few notable roles. Futaba, Celica, Cassie Cage
None sound like Echo
Maybe Fio though
But that's weird
Erica Lindbeck is a big name
Those are 3 main characters in major titles.
Persona 5, FE Echoes, and Mortal Kombat
Fio is a throwaway character
Travis Willingham is also big, but he's just a cameo as Hal-fred
Yeah but he's Matthew Mercer's buddy.
fair
So we have 3 mystery VAs, all of which can be Echo.
1 huge name
1 big name
1 mystery
watch it be none of them when Echo gets added to the game
Though she has only 1 line
"Hello Winston"
The French cop does talk more than her
casting Hojo Shin as a French cop would be a weird choice
it bugs me that we don't have an in-universe name for the events of Storm Rising
Retribution is "the Venice incident"
Uprising is "the King's Row uprising"
Storm Rising is . . . "Hurricane Ferdinand"?
The french cop and omnic sound french
Maybe the public never heard of Overwatch going to Havana? That's why we don't have a name code for it?
@worthy rose I recognise my own accent - so yes the VAs are probably french (we were brainstorming the unknown VAs in zero Hour) - are you there to shitpost?
I'd prefer a french revolutionnary omnic - but the policewoman is ok I guess
The quotes on the gamepedia are incomplete
Yesterday on route 66 mccree said that ashe did a good job growing the gang. I can't find that quote on the wiki
do you know what still bugs me
Does anyone have a version of that association guide, which would be more up to date?
https://www.reddit.com/r/Overwatch/comments/bol635/relationship_web_between_overwatch_characters/
Courtesy of @peak escarp
Sweet! Thanks
Hmm.. why do ana and widow both have "it's complicated" with Reaper? Pretty sure Ana is his enemy right now
Also, how do we know that three deadlock gang members are a family?
I think widow has it's complicated with reaper because he is partially the fault that she was turned into a killing machine and the reason she killed her husband
Ana was an OG overwatch member along side reaper and soldier 76 so now seeing him like this in a weird new form she is surprised and confused.
Going by this logic, almost all characters should have a "it's complicated"
Because very few of have straightforward relationships without any confusion and surprise
Ana also has a "it's complicated" with her own husband, while her relationship with her daughter is just "family", even though Pharah didn't reply to Ana's letter, which isn't a positive sign to their relationship
And Moira has a "it's complicated" with Reaper, even though he explicitly refers to her as his friend
Hammond hitched a ride on Winston's shuttle, but do we know if they were ever actually friends?
Sorry to nitpick, btw
