so blackwatch is also part of overwatch?
How he changed or turned bad I’d like more elaboration on but some ppl think it’s enough
and what turned him evil? and he did he get his shadow powers?
Blackwatch was a division of overwatch
Like how ecowatch is a branch of it which mei was
Or was it ecopoint
Ecopoint
@inner pilot
wasnt reaper good once?
He was. Retribution was the start of his downfall. As for where he "got" his shadow powers, there are 3 possible times.
1 - 30+ years ago in the Soldier Enhancement Program, which is where Soldier got his superpowers too
2 - 8/9 years ago with Moira. Even if she didn't give him the powers, she at least had a major involvement in its development.
3 - ~6 years ago when the Swiss HQ exploded. He was fighting Soldier 76 in there. People thought both were dead. In the present, his skin looks pale like an undead, most likely thanks to this
ik widow was tortured
Tortured is the wrong word. She was mentally conditioned and genetically altered to be the perfect loyal sniper. I don't know if torture was involved or not. Could have been genetics + positive reinforcement. Take away her ability to feel things, condition her by giving her surges of dopamine/pleasure when she kills something or obeys.
Moira was the scientist who gave shadow powers, the irish geneticist
!!loreHeroes moira
To learn more, please visit https://playoverwatch.com/en-us/heroes/moira#story
Moira was created because Chu wanted to create a “evil” healer to do the sorts and the game needed someone who could heal a crap ton
It’s actually very interesting to me how the writers made characters relevant to the story
whos chu?
Baptiste for example was a newer creation than Sojourn and didnt have an initial tie in which they now made to be the person who is probably going to rescue mercy
Chu is the lead writer for the story
i dont know any of those names
except for baptiste
is baptiste good?
ah
i see now
what are your predictions for the next hero after echo?
Don't know yet
Its hard to predict 2 heroes in the future
Maybe Sojourn
She is confirmed to be in development, and is a shorter term project than Mauga or Junkerqueen
Im in class with my phone sorry didnt save a pic of her
If you want to learn more darktoaster
You can watch the compilation of overwatch cinematics and character origin stories and go ask questions from there
Also read the short stories
i have the feeling everyone in the overwatch community is in school and really bored xD
Im in uni and nearly out the next hour
If you have questions just dm me and I’ll happily answer them
thank you. very kind of you ^^
this is Sojourn
she was the one giving you orders over comms during the Storm Rising mission
ah i see now
I wish we would get Liao
I wish we would just find out who Liao is
they should either be shown/mentioned already, or just retconned out
one or the other
at this point I don't even care about the outcome, I just want to know one way or another
liao is pretty much just a name, they can fit whatever character they want into that
i think an interesting resolution would be the original liao being confirmed dead and a hero being their child
!!loreonly
This channel is for serious discussion strictly related to the lore of Overwatch. Shitposting will result in a loss of access.
oh sorry, I thought i was in a another room XD
@worthy rose If you dont have an image saved, you can just link to the wiki page with !!wiki
Such as !!wiki Sojourn
Personally my money's on junker queen for next hero. But could be sojourn, or echo, or even mauga.
the devs said Junker Queen was a "long term" plan
Where did they say that? And someone said something about sojourn supposedly being a short term plan? Huh?
Jeff said it during ohnickel's Storm Rising stream
interesting
he also said that Sojourn is a hero they've had a design for for a long time, but haven't found the right time to add her to the game
same with Echo
Echo has existed since the first round of hero designs when they pitched the game, back in 2013
and Sojourn's earliest design was seen in Recall
yeah
can we talk about junkenstein's lore even if it's not canon?
what do you wanna know about it?
How those ravens found legitimate help at all lol
trained messenger ravens?
@worthy rose like, witch mercy wanted to help junkenstein but with something in return.....we never got to see what she really wanted from the doctor
I don't really know if this belongs here or not, but have you ever thought about how Sigma's backstory is kinda like the tell tale heart?
how so?
Well, think about it
Two men are doing something for a greater good but in the end become insane and hear a noise they can never stop hearing
And people think they're gone insane when in reality they think they're fine
But they are actually insane
Then in the end, they both suffer consequences of trying to figure out that noise
The man in the tell tale heart confesses about killing the man while going even more insane while Sigma becomes insane to the point of floating and being sent to a mental asylum before getting freed by Talon
The Tell-Tale Heart is about someone trying to prove they are sane by carefully describing the murder they carried out in precise detail.
Sigma doesn't question his sanity because in his mind, he has no reason to
While the other protagonist is so desperate to prove his sanity that he confesses his crime.
But there are still some similarities tho but you are absolutely correct my good friend
I'd say the part about hearing noises and thinking you are sane when you are not are common to most stories of insanity
Both were in Darkness, for example.
A number of games with sanity gauges also do this to the player directly, such as Amnesia or... I can't remember the name off the top of my head, but its a Lovecraftian Horror
For a Blizzard example, there are some members those corrupted by Yogg Saron that qualify. The other Old Gods too, to a lesser extent.
The big difference is the obsession over the beating/the melody.
But the obsession with sounds in the first-person games depend on your own perception as the player
How did McCree lose his arm?
It's not known, but some have speculated that he could've lost it during his "vacation" in London during the Null Sector Uprising.
https://youtu.be/RVeuUTEpBqQ?t=577
Does Baptiste say "I fak you in the head" ? Right after saying "Fully Healed"
that does sound like that, but he's speaking Haitian Creole, I believe
ooh

yeet?
so the Year of the Dog skins for Genii, Zarya, Pharah, and Mercy all have glowing circles with a creature symbol in it right? Tracer has a glowing circle on her chrono-accelerator right? Tracer = Golden Dragon!! BOOOOOMMM!!!!!
I do suspect McCree lost it in some incident while Symmetra was likely a voluntary augmentation. Considering she generates some of her constructs from that cybernetic hand it might even be a standard thing for people in her job at Vishkar.
Also are there ravens im junkerstein's lore?
I never knew he is called Lord of Adlersbrunn
that's nice
it's German and means Eagle's Well
it also comes from the name of Reinhardt's mentor, Balderich von Adler
probably next week
jojo kimian na boken
i hope we get the genji skin from that comic next week
for the halloween event
its been awhile tho
I don't think we will
they would have done it by now
plus it doesn't really match his silhouette
I do want a skin for Genji though
and I'm surprised they haven't done a mummy skin for Ana or Pharah yet
When/how did reaper get his abilities? Like how he teleports
Pls ping me with the answer
@fallen kraken see Moira's origin story
Ok
Apparently he turns into sentient gas that can fully and totally re-materialize into Reaper
Nanotechnology?
I'd say nanobots disintegrate Reaper, fly around carrying his cells effectively communicating to each other, and rematerialize him
Nano machines, son! Maybe his actual body is just a "brain in a jar."
I have no idea how his brain could still function while disintegrated using nanobots
@placid monolith Like, Reaper is actually a brainless body made out of flying nanobots remote-controlled from miles away? That would make more sense actually
Yeah
That means behind that mask is a robot of sorts
Hmm.. Ana did recognise him
I guess they tried to make it look like him
And it's still controlled by the same personality
So, the guns are materialised into by even more bots flying around Reaper
Actually that'd be a bit impractical. Maybe dense nanobot spheres in his cloak?
Everything about Reaper is just extra and impractical though.
Nah he's invincible and can get around as easily as air
Maybe when he was human he ripped such a fat vape cloud that he died and his souls inhabited it
🤔
Reaper still has feelings so he can't just be a robot
He went out of his ways to stalk what is most likely his family for example
Does someone there know the game the Lab in VR on Valve ?
Because there is a blue ball on a desk and it looks like the one in Antartica with the GREY inside...
Why would an unrelated game be related?
@placid monolith @spare flint As far as we know, there are no Nano machines in Overwatch. We also know Reaper's condition is genetic, not mechanical.
!!shitposting @spark compass
@spark compass Shitposting will result in a loss of access.
I thought the medicine stuff in OW were all nanite based rather than classic chemistry.
Based on what
Mercy's work is in the field of Nanobiotics. Not nanotechnology
She's not an engineer
Nor a computer scientist
Nanabiotics is still nanotechnology and should use similar tools for molecular construction.
Do you know what Microbiology is
Or rather, the nanobiotics that actually exist
Theyre not nanobots
I'm so tired of nanobots this and nanites that
I feel it’s safe to say the existence of supernatural abilities is more likely than nanobots. If doomfist can beat a bunch of OR-15’s like they stole something, without his gauntlet than it’s not outside of the realm of possibility (inside the lore) that reapers wraith and what not are a biological enhancement/mutation.
Doomfist has a cybernetic arm, and we've seen McCree's cybernetic arm crush a steel(?) train frame
so it's completely believeable that Doomfist could punch through solid concrete
Yeah but he fought these 3-4 OR-15’s one handed? His regular arm has to have some serious power as well imo
and he's a master martial artist
that too
Reaper is one of a kind so it’s hard to really make a comparison to other heroes in lore I’d say the closest thing to his wraith would be Hanzo dragons but that’s most likely hardlight tech but nanobots is a little far fetched as an explanation for wraith
These are valid facts I didn’t consider
Doomfist's right arm is prosthetic
nanobots doesn't work as an explanation because Moira is a geneticist, and her experiments were responsible for his powers
The closest to Reaper's powers is Moira
Who has the same powers more or less
Or the Talon Snipers
Who appear to have similar too
I’m aware of that but what about his left arm do we know if that’s prosthetic or not? Not that it’s outside the realm of possibility that a martial arts master beating a few robots one handed. Yeah the snipers do have similarities I forgot about them
It's probably not real either
He has a shotgun in his hand
And panels on his forearm
he doesn't have the shotgun knuckles in the comics
We've never seen him use the shotgun though
could just be a gameplay feature
I think they said it was an after thought because he needed some projectile to balance him in game iirc
Probably
that's the same reason Reinhardt got his firestrike (and the hammer throw they tried out in alpha)
Either way
He had the gauntlet when he destroyed the OR15s according to his trailer
Really now I thought he fought the OR-15’s in order to retrieve the gauntlet
the article that describes his attack on Numbani airport makes it seem that way
but some people think it's vague
I think it's vague. I'll rely on his visual trailer
It seemed that, in that context, it was meant to be canon to me
I think that it was shown that way just because it was a gameplay trailer, so they were restricted to using the in-game model which has the gauntlet
I disagree
After escaping from the facility, Helix lost track of Ogundimu until he resurfaced in Numbani, where he clashed with the newly introduced OR15 defense robots at the Adawe International Terminal, easily destroying them and reclaiming the Doomfist.
the description from the article describes the order in which he completed the tasks
but like I said, there is some debate about it
Yes. And I am on the side that disagrees
there's equal evidence for both, so it's inconclusive
I don't see this as actions in sequence, but actions in parallel
In English, both can be written in that way
maybe the novel next year will include a flashback to the fight, since Efi witnessed it
Yup
so then, she would remember being an OR15 and not having her current personality
that must be weird
Probably similar to remembering a dream
Knowing it’s real is a bit strange but same thing really
Isn’t she canonically still 2 months old?
the ages in the bio pages don't get updated
the Orisa that is in the game is 2 months old, even if the story progresses past that
I figured as much
I’m guessing she’s around 10ish months at this point?
Besides new characters really not much has been added to current Overwatch
I guess the book will tell for sure
the most recent thing to happen was Zarya fighting Sombra in Dorado
Oof really?
which was a few months after Orisa was created
I thought it was one of the cinematics
most of the cinematics happen shortly after Recall
within the same year, I think
Orisa was created over a year after Recall
i still think having the destroyed airport as part of the map and an OR15 skin for orisa was too good an opportunity for them to have that as part of the trailer (im not picking sides on whether he had the gauntlet or not, just saying i think they would have included that in the trailer regardless of whether he had it in canon)
I made a rough timeline to list when everything happens
I don't have WYLB on there, but it's set 3 days after the recall was sent out
so it happens about the same time that Mei is in Antarctica building her freeze gun
What’s the second Lúcio one on there?
that's just showing how long his world tour is
Ah gotcha
it started in late summer, and he had a new year's eve concert in London
it could have continued longer than that, but we have no other references to it
Pretty cool, I always just thought the cinematics were sequential par the Bastion one
the only things we have solid dates for are Infiltration (Sombra says during the ARG that after the attack on Dorado's power plant which happens Nov 1, she's heading to Russia), Mei's journal (which has dates from Oct 28 to Nov 2) and Masquerade (the fight in Venice happens during Carnivale, which happens in Feb/Mar, depending on the year)
the rest I figured out based on references to those things
and a little bit of guesswork
if we knew when Orisa's birthday is, I could figure out how much of my timeline is correct
I have her being built in late March
but if that's wrong, I'd need to shift around everything else
also if we knew the year, I could figure out the dates of anything that has a full moon (and there's quite a few)
enough that I think they're intentional
and not just there for aesthetics
you sure?
if anything, seeing the full moon so often
it makes me feel like the Overwatch team just really likes it
same tbh
behind the scenes video for shooting star said since the scene was almost entirely above water with very little to tell the audience how things are laid out, they relied a lot on the moon and the directional lighting that gave
doesnt really prove anything but
I think some of those could be just for aesthetics
but the one in Bastet (why specify a full moon in writing? just saying "the moon" would work well enough) is definitely intentional
and probably the one in Reflections that you can see through Torbjorn's window - the panel looks like it was drawn like that intentionally to show the full moon
yeah you have a point about those
i mean
full moon just sounds more mysterious
momon
shut
I get that for animated scenes, you want the full moon so the scene isn't so dark
those I can accept as a practical choice
also that crisp view of the horizon lunar colony
they're not a choice based in practice lmao
no one would've blinked an eye at the lighting in any of these if the moon wasn't there
it's not for the lighting, it's for the cool effect
and yes the horizon colony
they said it was for the lighting in shooting star
a full moon has long been given special meaning in literature
but even if they aren't intentional, they do mean that it happened at a specific time, since full moons can be predicted centuries in advance due to how regular the moon cycle is
well yes
would be weird to have harsh white moon lighting without a full moon
and that time comes around once every month
so deriving any kind of timeline is, well
tricky
combined with other factors to tell us what month it is, I can use the moon to find the day
but if I don't know the month and year, the moon is useless
i personally dont think they're taking that into consideration
other than the two you pointed out at least
whether it's intentional or not, they're stuck with it
they can't now say (for example) that Shooting Star happened on X date if X date isn't a full moon
they couldn't say that that scene in Bastet and the scene in Reflections are a week apart
also true, but im not sure how much that's gonna matter
Maybe they messed with moon so it’s always full?
tbh they probably don't have exact dates figured out for these events, just months/seasons
and the exact date doesn't make a difference
I just really like figuring out timelines
Definitely appreciate the effort too
same
Keeps everything nice and tidy
it's all because of Lord of the Rings
there's a day-by-day timeline in the appendix of the books that tells you when each events happen
ever since I read that, I've loved having things timelined out
oh man do not watch 24
Have you considered that maybe the moon is always full
Like, perpetually
As in, there is something that is artificially keeping the moon lit and full
might be the excuse they use if their dates end up not lining up because they never thought of it
Sounds like Time Cube
They could potentially slow the moons revolution speed to the same rate as Earth’s
No idea why or how but they added a hamster to the game
what does Hammond have to do with anything?
Moon is just one big hamster ball. But perhaps the events just happened to the schedule of the moons. At least I hope they'll take that into account if they make a proper timeline.
ok so my lore is that all the thicc female skins are pornstars
and mei is dating soldier 76
!!shitposting @worthy rose
@worthy rose Shitposting will result in a loss of access.
@peak escarp im really so sorry but i just dont care
then why say anything?
because i just dont care
stay in #general-discussion with everyone else who doesn't care
i dont play this game
then why are you even here?
try learning some grammar and maybe stop wasting your time
@ion#7659 Imagine trying to be funny by saying you don't give a fuck about the rules in 2019

I doubt even OW has the technology to slow the orbit of the moon, Also if its orbital speed matched the rotation of the Earth only one side of the Earth would ever see it and tides would get all messed up. locking it into geostationary would be bad. I suspect reliable full moons in some of their lore videos is mostly a way to excuse the lighting conditions. Or maybe someone did in fact build a huge reflector satellite so that the Earth never shadows the moon allowing Horizon to be in reliable daylight all the time for its solar panels or something.
I think the common appearance of the full moon is just a stylistic thing, with no lore implications
The full moon is seen at a much higher rate than normal so everyone’s wondering if it’s for show, coincidence, or alteration
im sure its just a coincidence
its nothing
just like the wheelchair on Lijang Tower was
That's different
The wheelchair was a map edition people wrongly assumed was to tease Hammond
Instead, it seems that it may belong to Dr. Chao
The moon has not only appeared full in every single appearance (shorts, comics, on game, literally whenever its night) but was also said to be full in text format in a short story too
So people are questioning why, is it style or is there a reason
It could go either way
the moon is not gonna be a playable hero
obviously
I wish
My point was that you were incorrect on the assumption being made
Moon - Frequent appearances lead to speculation that it is intentional. Other side is that it is just a stylistic choice
Wheelchair - Speculated to be related to Hammond or Dr. Winston. Instead it was related to Dr Chao
A better parralel would have been
Pharah's ring, or the Bruins game in the background of that same image
The ring was used to speculate that she was a Canadian Engineer. That was debunked
The hockey game was meant to say she in Canada. This was confirmed
I’d say it’s likely just a stylistic choice to give the sky some vibrancy
Where is the chat for hero concepts
I'm trying to make one for an omnic support
Then what is the right channel
That's what I'm asking
Asked it 2 hours ago
@limpid agate can you answer my question?
isnt Zenyatta enough heal bot for you?
i mean i get that noone cares about him both in meta and in lore but he still exists
NO
Should we really consider sombra a villain? She seems to be more of an anti hero
Eh.. She's a heel to Zarya's face. Might turn around.
an antihero is morally grey but still works for the “good”
we’re yet to see Sombra actually do that, although there’s been hints
i hope to see some more lore based missions like we saw with uprising
She is still an antagonist
She will never be a good guy
But there's potential she could work with the good guys just to further her own goals
between good and evil
self-interested
which depending on who can benifit her self-interest the most, that's who she will allign with
means to an end
Anarchy sees closer to doomfist, although he’s not a complete anarchist
Sombra is self motivated, she wants to be the one pulling the strings of the world and not being the one pulled. Wanting anarchy is having the entire world in shambles with no government which isnt what she wants because who wants to rule over a destroyed world?
Doomfist just wants humanity to evolve further. Humanity in his eyes benefitted from the omnic crisis and he wants that survival of the fittest to the world to come back
first she has to find out who has been pulling hte strings, Her intro video showed some big diagram linking back to a singular organization of some kind.
sombra doesnt want to rule over the world, she just wants to expose the truth
It sounds more like
She does want to rule the world
But from the shadows
She has an addiction to manipulation and the mantra that knowledge is power
She believes that there is an entity with knowledge above her that is pulling the strings
And she is trying to find it
What would she do when she finds it?
Naturally, she would exploit it. Manipulate it
And then she would be the one who holds all the cards
I think she’s just paranoid
have you considered the word "mania"?
more zen lore 👏
are people still going on about that?
people are blowing this zen lore meme out of proportions and are gonna be disappointed when its not as insane as they thought
finding out who Zen was before the Shambali won't make a lick of difference to the story
im hoping they end up tying him into the main conflict somehow but in terms of the immediate "soon™" lore we're meant to get, i'd be down for something super spiritual and emotional
@peak escarp you have no idea how calm that robot is, do you
it does make him a MEEEEEEEEEEEEME
oh no i dont do it for the meme
ik
i love that part of him
that's what makes him a good character
i just genuinely want just more lore
CANCER-CURER
people forget how young he is
idc if its good or not
curing cancer with every emote
20
yes
15 years younger than Genji
yet he's supposed to be a wise old sage robot who teaches everyone the ways of the world
I wonder how much Omnics know about the world already when they’re
Born?
Turned on for the first time?
they're probably programmed with basic knowledge
and some might have a personality module, like Orisa's custom one
plus training for whatever task they're made for
like being a store clerk or a factory worker
Zen is not important
If people get Zen lore
They're just gonna say "That was it?"
Just like Mei or D.Va
at best Zen lore would be more worldbuilding, telling us more about omnics or the Shambali
like how D.Va's lore expanded on MEKA
At best
You might get Zen joining Overwatch in the present with Genji
With most of the short not being in the present
If we get more zen lore
it should be about how he mentored Genji
but id alos like to see them explore that whole 'Iris' mumbojumbo
There isnt much Zen can tell us about the Iris we don't already know.
Of what he does know
Any mystery on the truth of what the Iris is, if its real
He wouldn't be able to answer
if they were to do an animated short they should do one for lucio :)
i don't see zenyatta joining overwatch, but i can see him joining their cause
What
Mercy and Reaper?
Heavy and Medic?
Heavy is Mauga and Medic is Mercy
psst the medic is baptiste
“Do I look like an angel of mercy to you?”
If you are talking about story parallels.
Medic has none in Overwatch
Heavy is... Somewhere between Reinhardt and Zarya in personality.
Medic is like a mix of Moira and Junkrat
As for their partner dynamic... There isn't one comparable storywise.
Maybe Reaper/Moira
Maybe Reaper/Moira
"Is THIS going to work?"
"Ahaha, I have no idea!"
Some of Mercy’s lines are references to the medic
Her staff is very similar mechanically
Moira will always remind me of the priest in WoW
her heal particle effects match that of holy spec and her attack matches shadow
This is the #lore-discussion channel and should be used only as such.
is there gonna be a new animated short?
me too
When is blizzcon?
November 1-2
so 3 weeks from now
I'm hoping it will be a short featuring Baptiste and Mercy, as a follow-up to the short story that came out in June
all the shorts so far have featured the characters that can be considered more relevant or "iconic" in terms of overwatch
comparing someone like tracer to someone like hammond
considering we've gone this far with no mercy short, i'd say she's up there regardless of whether or not there was a story that warranted a follow up
but who knows
she is also the last former Overwatch member that we haven't seen post-Recall
Last playable*
Sojourn's movements are still a mystery.
She has potential to become a main character in a short, comic, or story.
all the shorts so far have featured the characters that can be considered more relevant or "iconic" in terms of overwatch
Based on what? What defines an iconic character?
imjust judging by what ive personally seen online
How many of those only became "iconic" after their short
If you go by story importance.
some characters such as tracer, mei, d.va, winston, sombra, from what ive seen, appear to be more relevant in general than say, hammond or sigma (sigma is excused because he's new but he does have good short potential too)
not relevant plot-wise, i mean just publicly relevant
Publically?
No one gave a shit about Bastion before its short
Sombra was a 4 month arg
Mei was generally disliked
damn it i dont know how to explain this properly
its just something i noticed, dont know if it means anything
I would say Hammond is more popular than pre-short Bastion.
Giving Hammond a short
Would buff his popularity
Likewise, look at Baptiste
maybe its the heroes that came with launch or soon after that just appear that way to me
Baptiste comes out, no one gives a shit
Baptiste gets a short story
People like Baptiste now
im not ranking them by which ones i like, just the ones that seem the most popular online
im talking about just the shorts
Short Story is similar but weaker effect
Its a big thing that dives more into the character and makes them more popular
i wouldnt mind at all if they released a short featuring what i'd consider a less iconic character, i'd love a hammond short given he's one of my favorites
Maybe i am wording it poorly but
"Iconic Character"
You are saying that, it makes sense for a character who is popular to get a short
I am saying that, getting a short makes a hero feel "iconic" afterwards.
Bastion was not "iconic" before its short
But after?
most forgettable character for me right now would probably be . . . Symmetra? she's the one I always forget when making lists
Or Bob. Bob is probably the biggest character since Doomfist.
People love Bob
If Bob was just dropped on Ashe without the short
No one would care
But we got the short, we saw Bob, then we got him as an ult
And he became "iconic"
im the one that's wording it poorly, i suck at explaining my thoughts, but let me ask this: have you (exluding your personal opinions on the characters) noticed that the likes of tracer, d.va, mei, widowmaker, reaper, and mercy appear to be more popular online than hammond, zenyatta, zarya, or brigitte for example?
if not then i probably subconsciously made up those ideas
Zenyatta is very popular online, mostly for his lack of lore
You realize that, other than Reaper, those are all just traditionally attractive girls
That fan artists love drawing
Brigitte is infamous because of her controversy
As opposed to Zarya or Hamond or Zen
im not talking about attractiveness
appear to be more popular online
i'd put winston on my list of perceived iconic characters lol
Its because people think they look pretty
Reaper/Winston are the main antagonist/secondary protagonist
Even people who don't give a shit about overwatch like characters like Tracer or Mei or D.Va
And there are people who think characters liek Reaper, Genji, and McCree just look really cool
yeah exactly, those are the ones i noticed seem more "iconic"
The unpopular ones are generally the girls that get little fanart comparatively (Zarya, Orisa, Sym) or the males that are considered less cool as designs (Zenyatta, Hammond, Torbjorn)
a lot of them have insane public reach to players that dont even play the game
it's all about visual appeal
The shorts are about giving characters time to shine
While general popularity comes from physical design
Personality is also a big thing
maybe so, its just i felt like those are the ones that have been featured in shorts so far
them being in shorts did help with their popularity
I mean the list Jupit gave earlier
not all of them, there are only so many shorts as of now
do we really know Lucio's personality? he hasn't had much chance to show it
he shows it a lot in game
im not saying they'll forever only choose "iconic characters" for their shorts or if that perception is even a thing outside my brain
im really hoping we get a lot of cinematic content for the lesser loved characters come the "second generation of overwatch"
but for the next short, i think mercy is likely even disregarding the baptiste story, but i too hope its a follow up to that
yes
even before WYLB came out I was saying Mercy should be next
the internet wants a Lucio concert where Symmetra shows up to arrest him and D.Va is there working security for some reason
multi-heroes are great, when they make sense
was it made by the same person that wanted pharah to be d.va's mechanic in shooting star?
but there's no point in shoving in unrelated heroes just to have them there
oh I saw that "rewrite"
complete nonsense
i didnt, i just remember you mentioning it
no, the Lucio concert idea has been said by many people
if they're going to have Lucio and Symmetra clash, I'd rather they show him breaking into Vishkar to steal the sonic tech
Sigma needs a cinematic
i wish i was more interesting than i already am about that conflict but i just dont like those characters as much
His escape with talon
wasn't so much with Talon
more like they raided the asylum and stole him out
he probably wasn't very aware of what was happening
Owkey then they make a story were he and talon attack some boiis
just like you said, sym is the most forgettable to me too - i look at the giant hero gallery and i see so many heroes and think "wow, there are so many", then i look through them to see who im forgetting and they all make sense until i see sym and realize i forgot
I'd prefer something less action-heavy with Sigma - maybe a short story showing him working with Moira and how Talon manages to keep things secret from him
Nah they gotta show his awesome powers on a cinematic
if they go action-heavy, i wanna know the full potential of his abilities in-universe
Jupz cause controlling gravity sounds like a big deal
i wanna know how he receives orders and how he reacts to them, whether he snaps into reality while causing chaos
Or maybe like the first part of the cinematic will be him talking to Moira or someone and at the end there will be a short raid will you'll see his crazy side just destroying things
he has a few voice lines of desperately wanting to get the payload moving because he's scared of what might happen if he doesnt do it, perhaps punishment
I don't think they take him on many missions
Like something as the Darth Vader scene in Rogue One if you guys have seen that
they literally took him to be a living weapon
if they havent yet, they must have some at least slightly major plans for him
(talon, i mean)
According to Blizzard, Sigma is “unaware” he’s “being used as a living weapon.” Instead, he’s largely working off-site, in a lab Talon has granted to him.
How I understand that is that he's connected to some machine and if he controls gravity there it will effect some other machine outside that'll do the damage
I know it sounds like bullshit
we dont know the specifics of why, but in general to be a living weapon
Probibly because he was gud in science/universal crap
When Talon discovered De Kuiper's existence, they infiltrated the facility and broke him out, planning to use his brilliance and research to further their plans. In their custody, De Kuiper slowly gained control of his powers. Now, gravity moved according to his will, and he was closer than ever to achieving his life's goal. But the same experiment that had opened his mind had also fractured it, and he struggled to keep the pieces together.
makes sense he'd have a lab to further his research (which i wanna know more about) but what's the point of not using the dude that can control gravity on important missions
Probably because he's still unstable
they wanted him for his research, not his powers
Oke but living weapon doesn't sound like a researcher
!!shitposting @thorn flint
@thorn flint Shitposting will result in a loss of access.
Imagine
Where's my Zen lore at?
none of the official sources call him a living weapon
his research would definitely be beneficial to them, but what, are they trying to recreate his powers on others or are his powers just gonna go to waste?
Oke but tbf in his animated trailer he was looking pretty menacingly
he did
maybe that was a glimpse at his future
right now he's just used for his research, but when he masters his abilities, who knows?
i swear i thought the living weapon thing was official
that was pretty much the phrase i based his entire relevance on
oh the living weapon thing was in the tweet that revealed the origin story
Introducing Sigma - an eccentric astrophysicist who hopes to unlock the secrets of the universe, unaware that he is being used as a living weapon.
I see what you mean
everything else seems to have dropped that though
hmm
wouldn't be the first hero whose in-game abilities aren't canon
whats overwatch
@undone moss you mean, like, what Overwatch is in-universe?
._.
The best way I could describe Overwatch at least during omnic crisis is kind of like XCOM, An internationally funded group of specialists in science and combat formed to fight the omnics and eventually end the crisis.
during the Omnic Crisis, it was a strike team assembled in secret by the UN
afterwards, it became a global peacekeeping organisation
and then, 5 years before present day, it was disbanded amidst controversy surrounding its operations
I have always figured what they do now is possible due to funding from patents from their peaceful R&D years, Would not be hard to have held them in shell companies. Or Winston himself has a stash of patents to draw licensing fees off to fund operations. When they got disbanded the UN in theory would have shut down known OW accounts.
it had a black ops division called Blackwatch that was primarily tasked with taking care of criminal organizations and other sorts of things that Overwatch wasn't really allowed to do
yea Blackwatch did the jobs that were too dirty to have an OW name, And if I remember right it hit the fan when people found out about it after that operation went sideways.
yup
What happened to Genji that made him a cyborg?
his brother "killed" him
No, but he was definitely a step away from kockin' on heaven's door. If it weren't for an Overwatch unit (which included Mercy) that saved him, he probably would've died that night.
If his Blackwatch skin is any indication, the damage Hanzo inflicted on Genji during their violent confrontation was pretty vicious.
Oh dear.
I find it hard to believe that the fight was so bad that half of his body is cyber from the blackwatch skin.
Like I’ll probably understand a arm sliced off but a arm and legs? Idk man what did Hanzo do to him? Burn him?
Between the two, Hanzo was the better sword hand and is being brought up to be the next successor to the Shimada clan.
Genji, in contrast, only wanted to live a life of a playboy and had little interest in his family's illegal businesses. Yeah, he excelled and loved training as a ninja, but part of that could've been so he could use it to be a babe magnet.
Lol
Saw the edit with the babe magnet and immediately lost my mind
But yeah that's true
My point being, is Hanzo was being conditioned to continue leading the clan, in the chance anything happened to his father.
Genji became a liability.
But what happened to his father
I think he died.
Damn
He died of natural causes.
Mine just left
The clan elders quickly provoked a near-fatal confrontation between the two brothers that ultimately resulted in Hanzo deserting the clan and Genji destroying it.
So Genji's just doing his own thing and hanzos like chop chop
But how does Genji get his ninja stars from his arm? Does he have some in them?
Are you talking about his Young Genji skin?
Same way reaper has infinite amounts of shotguns I guess
No in the cyber skins but yeah how does that work for his young skins lol.
Tesseract?
?
If you know what that is
From marvel?
Not everything in-game equals to lore. But Genji would most likely have them loaded into his arm.
It's a small object with an infinite amount of space
Not from marvel
The actual thing
Well it's not real
Sorry never heard of it.
But now marvel
Just hope we get the swordsmen skin for Genji this Halloween.
*not
ANYWAY....
Side tracking aside, that's basically how Genji became giblets and Hanzo became the dictionary definition of a stereotype ronin.
What's weird
Is how the hell is he alive
Like I get the cyborg part
But my man was dog food
Plot armor.
That, and Dr. Angela Ziegler was a literal miracle worker.
Still tho
Well this is in the future with self ai robots so I won’t be surprised.
From a medical standpoint
There's realistically (meaning if Hanzo had full intent to kill and hit the right spots to) that he would be alive
No way he could be alive
So either he's dead or he was downloaded into a machine and is just a robot with a meat suit trying to pass as a cyborg
Also
We haven't learned the 1:1 retelling of exactly how Hanzo put his brother through a (metaphorical) wood chipper.
I don’t like the idea of his brain downloaded into a body.
Plus he’s still human as we see from the black watch skin.
(Meatsuit)
And in the Dragons animated short, Genji still has his organic parts when he taken off his mask.
Yeah.
True true I'm not saying that I'm right I just threw the ide about there to have fun
*idea
Understandable.
Why does hanzo only have feet armor?
That's fair.
Lmao I heard that joke somewhere.
So when he steps on Legos he’ll be ok and have the last laugh.
Like if you could chose between your vital organs and your toes which would you choose?
Are you talking about Sigma?
Moving aside from Genji and hanzo why did Reinhardt leave overwatch?
I think it says in the lore somewhere bout. Having sensitive ankles or some crap but still
I don't know why Talon couldn't give the fella proper footwear.
What bout him
In the Storm Rising event, Tracer and her superior officer (and Mercy) had chimed in on Reinhardt being barred from field work. We don't know why.
Why he leave overwatch I said?
Yeah that’s why I’m curious.
I feel like he’s the type of guy that’ll never leave overwatch.
REINHARDT AT YOUR SERVICE (Me trying to keep him alive as mercy) TIME TO DITCH MY TEAM AND CHARGE THAT RANDOM REAPER
"Having served into his late fifties, Reinhardt was faced with mandatory retirement from combat operations. Torbjörn, only four years younger than him, was particularly incensed that the organization simply "pushed Reinhardt out" after giving everything of himself in years of service."
That's what it says in Rein's wikipedia article.
Oof
But for real though if I see an enemy that just says charge all over ima charge.
Yeah, the little guy was so infuriated with this, he wouldn't forget the incident. When Brig came into the picture, Torb related the unfairness of it all to her when growing up.
Y'all ready for blizzcon?
Man I just want the Halloween event.
But yeah I am hope we get a animated short though.
Especially when we didn't get one at GamesCom this year.
I did love the short stories we got. Baptiste's in particular added so much flavour to his background.
Reminds me of Finn from Star Wars lol.
But anyways I am interested in the new overwatch novel coming out.
There's a new novel?
Kinda disappointed that it’s about Orisa instead of the more cooler characters but this could be a chance to make her more interesting.
Yeah it was leaked by amazon and it will have orisa and the girl who made her, lucio and doomfist.
Lol yeah but lucio makes it sound better.
kek
I hope it's not necessarily about orisa
but more so a collection of stories
cause as much as I think orisa is fine, I wouldn't necessarily think a security omnic who is the youngest in the cast would be the one to be put a significant amount of attention on
But Lucio?
Lucio has been to Numbani
Its a stop on his world tour
Efi is also a fan of his music
I think the story will be exclusively centered around the heroes of Numbani, and Lucio is more of an appearance for a few chapters rather than a leading role
Like Echo in Reunion.
Or Soldier in Hero.
imagine being mad at a military force for retiring an old dude
Like, bruh you got old. Live your life.
I hope we find out
As far as we know, only Reinhardt and Sombra know
And Reinhardt took it really hard.
I'd imagine Jack knows too.
Maybe he has a terminal illness or something
¯_(ツ)_/¯
Who knows
I'm sure it's something cool
Its not a terminal illness
He was retired 6 years ago
And its not for his fighting prowess
yeah 6 years is a bit long for a terminal illness
I think it might have been a bad judgment call he made while leading a mission
so he was forced to retire rather than face the fallout from that decision
also someone earlier said that Sojiro Shimada died of natural causes
this isn't confirmed
all we know is that his death was sudden and unexpected
@limpid agate Tracer and Mercy also know, they talk about it in Storm Rising
I don't think it was much of a secret within Overwatch
there was an incident of some sort that involved him
they don't go into much more detail
@Lorenerd ✨#5295 It sounds to me that they know he retired, which everyone does. I don't think they know why
He's taking retirement hard, and they know it was forced on him, but that's where it ends.
didn't they say stuff like "did you talk much with Reinhardt after what happened", and "he's taking it all very hard"?
sounds like they know about a bit more than just his retirement
did u know that sombra joined blackwatch before talom?
She did not join blackwatch before talon
she wasn’t
@dusty granite she didn't, and she wasn't
whatever you're thinking of, it must've been a fanmade thing
what is that canon is that both Talon and Blackwatch had an interest in Shimadas
Reyes contemplated recruiting Hanzo into Blackwatch, but doesn't seem to have ever gotten around to it
Talon has invited Hanzo and Genji's farther Sojiro to join them, which he refused
and Talon has an interest in recruiting Hanzo, which he would be likely to refuse
hanzo doesnt wanna join anyone.. he just wants to hate himself for hurting genji
guess ur right
but reyes shouldve killed winston
you thinks they'll add hanzo's dad as next dps?
😎
Hanzo's dad is dead
😨
Is Winston Sr.'s death confirmed to have happened in the moon gorilla uprising?
yes
Darn. I was hoping he might still be out there somehow.
he and the other scientists were tricked into an airlock and ejected onto the surface of the moon
What a shame
Harold being alive would leave big plot holes
What a shame. He was a good man. Lips smack what a rotten way to die
Now the other subjects could end up being heroes
In particular the other two that are numbered (unless they’ve already been named)
which subjects, the Horizon ones?
I think only Simon has a chance at being added as a hero, but not for a long time
Yeah the horizon ones
Simon was the ringleader of the Horizon uprising
Was specimen 8 up there before hammond was added?
yes
Specimen 8 Hammond was listed on the map since the beginning
people just assumed he was a chimp or something
I mean unless more of them found a way off I doubt any are still alive, I mean eventually Horizon would just start to break down
I figure the base did require semi regular rockets just with parts and such for the engineering systems.
there's plenty of food though, and I don't think the apes need much else
I am thinking more the air and power systems
Not all of that can be maintained with locally sourced material.
The apes are intelligent, more so than most humans, chances are that in the universe if overwatch they’ve found a stable source of food
Maybe even escaped horizon
@peak escarp I mean, there's the "Harold's alive but in coma" theory
how would that make any difference?
it would leave an opportunity for him to wake up
all signs point to him being dead
Unkilling a character works once before it becomes tedious
They did it with Genji
That's enough
And I dont mean in universe examples
I mean thise to us as players, like Genji
resurrecting a character who is confirmed dead sets a dangerous precedent and removes all danger from the story
just look at DC/Marvel comics - there's always some alien tech/time travel/Lazarus pit to bring people back to life, so any character death is meaningless
@peak escarp would it really
literally just show Harold lying down on a hospital bed
show flashbacks of him being rescued, possibly by Winston
but how would he get there? how would rescuers not get attacked by the apes?
having Winston rescue him would retcon his feeling of being without a family in Reflections
I think it would
but he's also still gone
though I suppose he would be spending the time at Harold's bed
people with family who are alive but not with them don't act like they have no family
so yeah, I guess that does put a hole in that idea
it would also been a retcon, since Harold was said to have been killed with the other scientists
and I'm against any retcon of previously established facts
I don't think there was a statement that specifically named Harold as being among those killed
that's the only reason I'm leaving any room for doubt
not specifically, no
but it did say the scientists were all killed
and Harold is one of the scientists
Harold is dead, would prefer to see an unnamed survivor e.g. a worker over him
Omnics don't grow up like humans right?
Like they'll look the same throughout their entire life
same height, size, etc.
They could upgrade but yeah they probably never change
Can’t an Omnium upgrade Omnics?
Omnics do change
but their change is like the way people change once they're adults and such
For example, Omnics of the UK are made as work labor robots and we see that Zen's designs looks strikingly similar to those type of omnics, and he found religion and moved past his initial labor programming of sorts
“Omnics...Omnics never change”
there is some art of omnic children, but that could just be art and not a representation of actual child-sized omnics
@devout sable I think Dr. Chao is supposed to fill the story thread you are talking about
A scientist from HLC that survived.
We don't know anything about her, other than she was not explicitly listed among the dead, she used to work there, and she is now on Earth
We don't know if she was there during the uprising or not
But she would explain the missing suit
I think she left before the uprising
otherwise I think she would be a bigger deal
the news bulletin says "Lucheng CEO is a former Horizon scientist" - if she was a survivor I think it would mention it there
I was kinda hoping that “What You Left Behind” would get made into a short.
But that’s unlikely.
They're definitely doing new material this time. If they just made WYLB into a short, I'd ragequit Overwatch for at least a week.
Why am I not going into eu server?
That's really annoying.
Did Blizzard prevent Koreans from entering the eu server?
want to play games with Europeans, too.
I think the Halloween event will be held in November.
that sucks
???? why would the halloween event be in november?
next likely date is oct 15th with the switch release
True
A blizzard employee also confirmed something is happening to overwatch on the 15th other than the switch release
Its most likely the 15th
I wonder if they will give a character a switch exclusive skin like link for tracer
call
!!loreOnly
This channel is for serious discussion strictly related to the lore of Overwatch. Shitposting will result in a loss of access.
omicc
@deft hollow Link for tracer what? As in Legend of Zelda link?
Oh NVM for some reason I thought you were saying there already was a link skin I was like huh?
Id like to think they do switch exclusive ones. I guess the closest to link would be that elf one she has lol
You mean like a skin that only switch users can get? That wouldn't really surprise me much, but it sure would piss me off
I'd be disappointed by Switch exclusive skins
I want to be able to get everything on my main account
I'm still disappointed by the non-recurring items
I want those cute D.va sprays dammit
or the OWL sprays
this is why I make sure to get everything while I can
even event skins, since one day they'll stop offering them I just know it
I got two of the OWL sprays
but I didn't have a stable internet connection at the time
so I couldn't keep the stream up for all of it
the only things I'm missing are Blizzcon 2016 Bastion, the Summer Games 2016 spray and icon, and Bundesadler Reinhardt from last year
I've been trying to max things out for about a year
spent far too much money on lootboxes, in hindsight
same
but as of late, I guess I kinda just stopped making the effort
with fewer items per event, I find less need to buy things
at least Halloween having a PvE event means I'll play more and earn more boxes
I hardly played at all during Summer
im at the point where i keep getting duplicates in loot boxes if theyre not epic or legendary
but i am missing a lot of stuff because i got into ow late
if you're getting dupes it means you've got all the sprays and common stuff
unfortunately that doesn't make rarer drops more likely
dont really care that much for sprays tbh
but then again i care more for highlight intros than skins lol
i like the emotes too but highlight intros pair the character shown in those with some cinematic flair
its a shame we only see the same few ones in real matches
I have mine all set on random, unless it's an event, in which case I set the event highlights
i always stick to my favorite unless i have two favorites then i randomly alternate
hammond’s “pop up” highlight has a bit cut out from the start where the ball comes out of a roll and lands on its legs that was only shown in the gameplay trailer, shame
sombra needs a new one too but no one’s gonna use it anyway lol
and im one of them
my actual favorite sombra highlight is “pulse” but i cant let go of the hacking one
I don't play Sombra enough to care about my highlights for her
i only just realized a few weeks ago that i didnt have any highlights unlocked for reaper or sym bc i never play them
i got one for reaper now but nothing for symmetra
best hammond one is dramatic
Hong Kong's independence would have ended in 2047
Overwatch takes place several decades after that
Hong Kong is not relevant to this channel
Do you think Mei would prefer the collapse of China or their perpetuated pollution?
It very likely doesn't exist in Overwatch
@valid terrace She is very much concerned with the environment.
That is quite literally her entire character and motivation
She is an environmentalist
But would it enable her to shut down entire industries?
I just mean if she could not that she can
She’s a little too nice tbh
Especially for someone who’s lost everyone that we know she cared for
Except Snowball I guess
honestly its unknown if the OW era China is anything like our current one. As a world power military wise the Omnics would have gone at them full court press.
A robot war probably shattered a lot governments as we know them
Horizon Lunar Colony was run by Luncheng Interstellar which comes off as kind of SpaceX type thing. So that is some hint of alterations given a private company is running the lunar colony rather than the government space agency.
Omg🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@limpid agate hm, did they get muted posting the free Hong Kong Mei here?
or did they get in trouble in other channels?
personally I do feel that Mei would've been sympathetic
did u know in castiilo there is a room for sombra and that in there it says she has connections w/t overwatch
aalso she got her translocator from winston
I mean
