they can't go into too much detail or there will be people pointing out what they got wrong
I mean then you just technobabble it away.
Say it has reversed polarity or whatever.
I mean that’s the point. I like reading technobabble. Lists and names of equipment. Etc.
that's one of the advantages of writing fiction - you can make stuff up
Exactly.
like hard light, or chronal accelerator, or omnic energy
And worse case scenario you just say that physics works differently in your universe.
Omnic energy?
what powers Zen's orbs
Ahh
Shambali
Is there any lore for the fighter jets that show up in the Reinhardt short?
I know there’s tracer/slipstream lore but I gotta know more.
So when Tracer tester out that experimental plane and became out of sync with time did they ever try the project again or was it scrapped
Also I’m pretty sure the Rein short was made before the slipstream was even invented
yes
the flashbacks in Honor and Glory are set about 30 years ago
Tracer's accident was about 8 years ago
Very few fighter jets are scrapped after only a few flights but maybe the slipstream like the Avro Arrow of the OW universe.
I mean it did kinda make a human disappear and reappear from the fabric of time
It makes sense to scrap it for safety reasons
And there are boomers nostalgic for the age of Overwatch who say “bring back the Slipstream! They could make it work!”
lol
I mean there are still people in Canada saying that about the Arrow.
He’s like 62 right?
none that I've met
What is the Arrow
but they could be out there, sure
I assume some kind of experimental jet
Canadian fighter jet that was cancelled abruptly for political reasons. It basically took with it the entire Canadian aerospace industry.
So wait they scrapped it for political reasons?
Essentially yeah. And there are still some folks who propose bringing it back, almost 60 years later.
iirc it was cancelled because they would have to produce thousands of planes to make production worth it, and nobody wanted to buy them
Was there anything special about the jet
Oh
It was supposed to be an interceptor IIRC.
But more importantly it was supposed to revitalize the Canadian aerospace industry.
So was it like able to go immense altitudes?
Previously most of the aircraft built in Canada were license built, so an indigenous high-performance jet with export customers would be an economic boon.
You also have to remember that in 1959, Mach 2 (2x the speed of sound) was still extremely impressive.
the organization or the world
either
At one point I started writing headcannon for the satellite drone.
And isn’t Reyes/reaper the result of a supersoldier project?
do you guys know how they got sigmas weapon ideas 😉
Reyes and Morrison were both part of the soldier enhancement program
Widowmaker too but under Talon.
Reaper without the wraith powers would just be a Soldier reskin
Widowmaker isn't part of the soldier enhancement program
that was during the omnic crisis
Right but it’s still bio augmentation
genetic enhancement, yes
you guys know how they got sigmas weapon ideas
no
really awesome so did you know old old doomfist
Moira worked for blackwatch before she defected to Talon so it’s not much of a stretch for her to have world on both programs.
*worked
Sigma's accretion is based on a beta ability for Doomfist
I thought you meant his primary fire
well no i couldnt find the words but thank you
I don't think Moira worked on the SEP
that was ~30 years ago
Moira is 48
I doubt she was a geneticist at 18
well she was smart
Internship?
she isn't said to be a prodigy or genius like Mercy
I mean you don’t have to be.
at age 18?
There are interns with sec clearance.
during the omnic crisis
18 year olds are barely starting university
in America where the Super soldier program was in
an 18 year old irish lady geneticist who was the intern for a secret military experiment in the united states
becoming a geneticist requires a Ph.D, which is like 8 years of school
18 year olds these days only know how to hit a bong and slouch in ceno link
totally
So like was Junkrats grey skin like a genetic thing or is it from all the smoke and ash he’s around from explosives
She doesn’t have to have worked in any significant capacity on the SSP. Just being there would be more significant.
grey skin?
its not really grey
Oh true. Forgot about that part.
but why would she and why would they let a random irish 18 year old go to a secret american base where they experimented on soldiers which btw was assumingly during an event on the scale of a world war
lol good point
I’m not gonna argue whether or not it happened but it’s not totally unreasonable. I would argue that an event on the scale of a world war makes it more likely for weird things or happen.
I think that would make it less likely
Systems break down when people get desperate. Rules get broken.
people have also suspected that she was involved in the genetic conditioning of the apes on Horizon
just because she's the only geneticist we know, doesn't mean she's involved in every instance of genetic manipulation
So on a side note what was the point of slowing Widows heart?
Steady aim
Oh
something about stopping her emotions so she would be a close to heartless killing machine
Alcohol is considered performance enhancing in rifle comp because it slows the heartbeat.
I don't think the science works out if I'm being honest
nor is making her blue stealthy
^
Is that actually how sniping works?
probably not
but hey game science doesn't need to make much sense
realistic sniper games will have sway on the scope, and some give you the option of holding your breath to reduce sway
I mean who knows
Maybe when we learn how to keep a human alive while slowing there heart we’ll find out
Well headcannonically she uses a gun/railgun hybrid so the primary issue she would run into is sway instead of bulletdrop/lead.
And the game uses hitscan.
Sniping games this is my specialty
Also do we ever find out what the other gun Roadhog has on his back is
Or ever uses it
Is it not his ult?
I was just wondering if he ever uses it in like the comics or something
we still talking about snipers?
Probably scrapped content that was already part of the character model.
If you want to talk about snipers sure.
I mean we also never see the gun soldier uses on his pantsleg
well anyhting you want to know about snipers
or see the grenade launcher thing that reaper used in the cinimatic launch
Ye I just thought he may have used the gun at one point in the comics or something
Again, this game has a LOT of cut content.
Does it?
I mean at least that’s the impression I get from Jeff.
It was originally a completely different game after all.
True
@zenith prawn anything you wanna know about snipers?
Do you want to tell me anything in particular about snipers?
Snipers as in people or rifles?
well if there is something that you wanna know i could help, i can confirm the slower breathing and heart rate does help with shooting a rifle
Favorite sniper game?
all those random mobile games
Lol
currently im playing through sniper elite 4
this is an Overwatch lore discussion channel
Okay okay
but either than that idm what game all though sniper elites have been a good realistic game to play
if you want to talk about other games, take it to General
Sorry
sorry
Anyway I wrote a bunch of technobabble to rectify the impossibility of Widowmaker’s rifle if anyone wants it.
dm me
It’s got muzzle flash, charge up, no drop time, etc.
Features that should be logically confined to one type of firearm without the others.
its stupid everything about widow is dumb
Yes but that’s not good enough.
she doesn't need to charge her shots in lore
I still think that she charges it up in lore
i guess so
so I don't know about snipers, but maybe the shot is so powerful we haven't seen her shoot long enough to see any drop
Nope
k
but she shoots bullets
I explain it away as a gaussgun because it shows a bullet.
is it an energy gun?
why do tracers pistols in lore make so little damage? xD
like in cinematics she shoots and shoots and does no damage xD
Also it consumes 3 units of ammo when it fires scoped in
well 1st off whats she shooting?
Tracer or Widowmaker?
i think tracer is just shooting plain old energy
Tracer’s gun is an energy weapon I think
They call it a “pulse pistol” and there are references to “pulse munitions”
well energy weapons arent really for damage but for energy like shields or anything electrical if that makes sense
her whole story has to do with "pulse"
"pulse munitions" is implied to be an energy-based weapon
than why is a pulse bomb so good?
I have to imagine that “pulse” is lasers but slower than light somehow.
look, we got a talking gorilla, and a man that turn to smoke, somehow is wierd
IRL the term “pulse” is often used to refer to a brief laser shot.
well ask the gorilla he made tracer weps lol
Right her teleporter thing sorry
Who even makes the weapons?
@peak escarp are you excited about OW 2 and the lore that it will come with it
oh yes
Who are Overwatch’s war profiteers besides the omic corporation?
OW 2!!!!!????
what character are you looking most forward to?
I always look forward to anything that will expand the OW universe
I want to learn more about Sojourn
and Casino
and Echo
I kinda want the original characters to return though.
why wouldn't they?
I’m really used to playing Widowmaker and the character is cool.
wait is there a OW 2?!
Sorta?
There are at least rumors about an OW 2
It's not really a sequal
there's a rumor that they're developing the next game in the Overwatch franchise
ohhhh okayy kewll
It’s like PVE supposedly.
which has been codenamed OW2 by the public
damn
probably won't replace Overwatch though
yeah
I think they compared it to the game left 4 dead or something
The whole thing is that the OW game engine doesn’t support PVE very well so they had to cut corners for the anniversary events.
rumors state that they should announce it at blizzcon this november
announce
not release
keep that in mind
yes
OW2 is supposed to have a game engine more built for PVE
if it gets announced this year, it won't be out until at least next year
awesome
This is lovely and all but...tracer hover bike gameplay when?!
I never really believed it but the cutscene still left me wanting.
you think they would ever do a fire emblem heroes approach to a spinoff?
i could see the bike there
What’s FEH like? I don’t play it so I have pretty much no idea why you’re suggesting.
Gacha
No, I cant imagine a gacha game
And if they did make one, I cant imagine it being popular
Genre has a target audience that Blizz would miss if they attempted it
I think it’ll have to retain the FPS format to keep the same player base.
The most likely result right now is something along the lines of Mann vs Machine or R6 Quarantine
Hopefully with more substantial story than the Archives event
I guess what I’m trying to say it that Storm Rising left a lot to be desired.
I really hope they have the same abilities and characters as normal overwatch but I also feel like that will get stale much quicker but I just cant imagine playing the current characters anyother way then I do now
Wait ow2? No IT cant be
it's not going to be a sequel
what happened to the other crusaders?
the ones we saw in the short either got killed or retreated
And germany only gave one crusader to overwatch so take that as you will
I was thinking about how Sigma created a black hole, and found a lead that has a possibility. Ever heard of a Kugelblitz? It’s a black hole made from energy instead of mass. The energy exceeds that of what was observed.
But even doing that would be mind-bending considering the radius of the black hole in the lore is approximately 12cm, approximately the size of a bowling ball. Any mathematicians want to help me piece together the Schwarzschild radius?
Zen origin story
if Sigma's black holes were scientifically accurate, they'd be much more destructive
so it's understandably toned down a bunch
So in that one black and white photo in Ana’s backstory the only character we don’t know is that one guy kneeling to the very left correct
is it possible that he is just a young version of gerard?
nah, unlikely
Pretty sure that if the black hole we saw in his origin was realistic it would have ripped apart the earth and probably proceed to consume all the planets near earth
His power also is just gravity manipulation so maybe it’s an artificial black hole
One he can manipulate
Hi, usually during Gamescom we get a new Overwatch cinematic, it's been consistent since the release of the game. Any chance you guys know if there was an official announcement or confirmation from the dev team why there's NO trailer this time around?
Blizzard did not attend Gamescom this year
I see
Something about money issues or so
As part of a renewed effort this year to maintain our focus on development, for our current games and our future projects, we won’t have a booth at gamescom 2019. The show is an important one for the European and global gaming community, and we’re going to miss meeting players in Cologne this year. You’ll still be able to find Blizzard gear in the gamescom 2019 shop area, and we’re looking forward to returning to the gamescom show floor in the future. We’re also looking forward to sharing more details about the projects we’re currently working on when the time is right.
Jeff said there was something cool/a cool announcement coming in the next month or so
Does Baptiste say: “ I fak you in the head” when killing someone? I keep hearing that
If they made a gatcha game they wouldn’t have the
Hundreds of characters feh has
Even if you divide them into tiers or whatever it isn’t many
Fire Emblem has 15(? I think it maybe more) games and then made variants like easter X masked lucina etc
Has there been any updates to Bastion's Lore ever since the bird loving omnic met up with Torbjorn?
nope
So just wondering how did the Australian nuclear explosion happen?
Wasn’t it something about omnium
The Australian Liberation Front (a group of anti-omnic extremists who felt threatened and/or disenfranchised by the granting of territory to the omnics in the Australian outback) ending up storming the omnium and blowing it up.
We don't know if they intended to blow it up, or if they did but just didn't realise what the scale of the consequences would be.
It's implied that most (if not all) of the ALF then went on to become the inhabitants of Junkertown.
I think Roadhog is the only confirmed former member, but there's at least one dude in a comic that is hinted to be a veteran too.
Wait what exactly is the omnium
an omnic factory
Oh
Where omnics were produced before and during the omnic crisis
The factory was powerful enough to destroy all of Australia?
And maybe after in some cases
Damb
It irradiated the outback
not all of Australia, just the Outback
Ah
the omniums were shut down at some point before the Omnic Crisis, due to technical issues and charges of fraud against the Omnica Corporation
then they woke themselves up and launched a military campaign against humanity
25
So the outback explosion would’ve had to happen in that time frame correct
So like the 2040-50’s
I love Torbjorn so much
All these kids out here with there hard light and there cronal accelerators
He just needs some metal molten lava and a hammer
He gets it done
just a guy who is good at shooting
Kinda like the Hawkeye of OW
pretty much
McCree's in a better position on this one tho
He's a good example of the Badass Normal trope: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BadassNormal
Him and Baptiste.
I mean yeah I guess Baptiste is a normal human
But the contrast is that McCree has only a gun and some flashbangs
Baptiste has biotic technology
Exo boots
Immortality devices
Matrix devices
That’s like comparing Hawkeye to Iron Man
Either way, I wouldn't rate either's chances in a fight with the Hulk/Winston.
There are lots of people that are just normal people.
Excluding mech suits/high tech armor
We have:
Ana, Ashe, Baptiste, Hanzo, Junkrat, McCree, Mei, Roadhog, Torbjorn, Zarya
Even if you want to make it just
Pure skill, no/minimal tech
Its still
Ana, Ashe, Hanzo, Junkrat, McCree, Roadhog
Aside from the Junkers
Those 4 are all good shots
And the Junkers are just running around with Mad Max garbage
Hanzo's got specialized arrows and, you know, the dragons
Would his technological tattoos count as minimal tech
He only uses them for the dragons and to enchant his bow
On one hand, they are some complex tech
On the other hand
They're only his trump card
I'd say its just
Ana/Ashe/McCree - Pure Skill
Junkrat/Roadhog - Pure Chaos
Hanzo- Borderline
it's as I said though, there's a lot of advanced tech around, but McCree's still a bit less disadvantaged here than Hawkeye
given that Hawkeye's got... bow and arrow against cosmic threats and robot armies
Obviously he was
That's why he consumes Hogdrogen
To counteract the radiation poisoning
Yes
He seems to be able to lift people with a massive Hook with ease
And seemingly no tech
Oh I didn’t know that
Oh yeah that thingy
you can see it on the right
Ye I thought it was just a holster
Guess that may help a bit with control
Goddamn he’s 7’3
That’s taller than Doomfist
And Bob
We don't know Doomfist/Bob's heights
Only for heroes before D.Va
And for Hammond (not Wrecking Ball, just the Hamster)
Isn’t Doomfist 7’1
we dont have his official height
Oh
none of the post-release heroes have reference kits
and that's where we know most of the heights from
wish we could get them though - they're a great resource for art/cosplay
In some old Torb concept design he was supposed to have a device he could put on walls and would shoot a hook and chain out of it on enemies
It just seemed cool
Kind wish we still had it
the beta footage made it look very op
it's in the Archives of Overwatch panel from Blizzcon 2018
Ah
That’s why I can’t find it
In fact where do people find all this concept art and abilities from
Such as Omniblade
Which was the old concept for Sombra
Omniblade is Genji
For gameplay
And for the most part, most of her design
Overall, Omniblade and Sombra really have nothing to do with each other at all
From what I gather, they're as similar as Junkrat and Wrecking Ball
Yeah I mainly meant as how the character was supposed to look and be as an aspect
Both were supposed to be a high mobility stealth female
Also another question
In the cinematic short in the museum does reaper pull out another gun as his grenade launcher or do the grenades come out of his shotguns
This is not his shotgun
Woah that looks cool
this is the Sombra concept you're probably thinking of
I think the top design is what they called Omniblade
Which is like Junkrat to Wrecking Ball
A Junkrat concept became Wrecking Ball
Even though the two kits and designs had very little in common if anything
the one under looks like ana
@teal meadow Yes, that's why they changed Sombras design again
She looked too much like Ana
I don't like Sombra with white hair, I'm glad they changed her
i think the hood really fit her stealthy nature
but aside from that, it doesnt fit her sarcastic vibe and the hairstyle she has now fits that more so getting rid of it made sense
with her being anonymous and invisible, i wonder what it would've been like if it was her face too (not just her name) that we never saw except for one plot-related reveal (like her name in searching)
but i dont know whether a joking and sarcastic person behind a mask would be cool or just plain bad..
perhaps if her mask had the ability to emote like akali in that pop stars music video
I personally don't really like it but I think it would be an interesting skin
I just wish blizzard would release character sheet PDFs for all the new heroes like they have for the release ones.
yeah
Is there any lore on the Queen of Junkertown
she's a former mech battle champion in the Junkertown Scrapyard and she used her popularity to take over and become Queen
Damb
So wait theoretically if Hammond could oppose her with his mech could beat the Queen could he take over
he could
he won't
because she actually likes him but doesn't know he's a hampster assumingly
Well if she didn’t know he was a hamster then she would probably assume he’s an omnic and the junkers hate those
Well if she didn’t know he was a hamster then she would probably assume he’s an omnic and the junkers hate those
No one knows Hammond is a Hamster
Or at least a significant majority don't
Bruce might if anyone
they just trust that he's not an omnic
because they wouldn't let an omnic compete in the scrapyard
Bruce might've vouched for him
So is Pharah part of a special ops or do all Helix Security officers look like her
So are there rankings based on there colors
Most at Brown and Pharah and the one dude on the right seem to be blue
In a Vee formation the point man is usually the team leader IIRC.
the guy in blue with the moustache is the Captain
Pharah is just a lieutenant in this comic
ok. batiste confuses me in more ways than i even knew were possible
Captain Khalil is killed on page 6
Apparently infantry do formation differently than airplanes.
I looked it up and pointman is not usually team lead. (EDIT: nevermind that's not true)
Leader is upfront in a team wedge formation and acts as pointman.
All the diagrams I'm looking at show TL as pointman
If I had to guess the TL is pointman because they need to lead from the front and give commands accordingly.
Pharah's team must do it differently
or the artist didn't think about it and wanted her front and center because she's the main character of the comic
Well they do fly so maybe they're doing a finger four.
But that would still make Pharah the flight leader
Oh boy do I like overthinking things.
So @inner vault what confuses you about Baptiste
Also another thing
Why does Pharah have different gear than the rest?
Is she like the explosive specialist
Grenadier/AT?
I’d say that’s likely
There's clearly a DM in the back.
you guys in on making jetpack cat a character?
Uhh
Uhh
It's slightly more reasonable than Wrecking Ball.
how would he not know talon was evil. or at the very least have some kind of fkn inkling as to what was happening. i honestly think he just used talon for the revenue and when tuhey asked him to do dirtier jobs he dipped. that makes infinitely more sense to me
Jetpack Cat will never be a character
nooooo!
nu stop it
ik
JpC is cannon.
yea
yes we know
This is good.
that's as close as you're ever going to get to Jetpack Cat
-_-
Ok so here’s the thing Sage
Baptiste joined Talon at a very early stage in it notoriety
It wasn’t known as the “world wide terror group” it is in modern era
Back then they were known as a mercenary group
Which would be great for Baptiste and his carribean friends
Desperate people do desperate things.
Baptiste was just looking for work
he was okay with a little bit of shady stuff, but once they started killing civilians, he was out
The raid scene in the short story is pretty much exactly the opening scene in Star Wars 7
pretty much
there's strong parallels between Baptiste and Finn
does that make Mauga = Captain Phasma?
“Conflicted soldier abandons terrorist organization”
Wait who’s Mauga
No that would be Capt. Cuvea or however it’s spelled.
baptiste's friend i think
Baptiste's friend from the short story
Is that photo in the short
yes
Damn guess I never noticed
Capt. Phasma is Capt. Cuerva
some were made before the came out
the first 6 - Train Hopper, Dragon Slayer, Going Legit, A Better World, Mission Statement and Destroyer were all written and released before the game went live
How many comics are there
Ana's two comics (Legacy and Old Soldiers) may have been written before the game went live (or at least started)
the comics section of the media page has 18 comics
1 is the Yeti Hunt mini comic (non-canon)
1 is the sequel to Junkenstein which is also a mini comic
so 16
the last comic was Retribution, released in March of 2018
Hmmm
Damn I thought there’d be more
So how do you guys think an immortality device would work
Not like it does in game
I'd imagine it just supresses incoming impacts
Rather than preventing death
Like, if you take a bullet to the head in an immortality field
The bullet is still in your head
So then when the field dissipates what would happen
Rip then
Doesn’t seem too useful in this case
That just makes it really difficult to kill people inside it
For example, in the comic
The pier was blown away
But what was in Baptiste's field was simply knocked over
Impact supression.
Is my speculation
Same goes for bullets
Immortality field = Bullet in the head = Delayed death
Impact supression field = Bullet bounces off head = You don't die but still feel pain
But that's just my speculation on how it functions
Or which comic it is
Not bullets
But the pier explosions
Is at the end of his short story
The resulting explosion shattered the air. The middle of the pier was blown into the air, chunks of concrete
raining into the bay. Some crashed into the decks of nearby boats, capsizing them. Seagulls scattered
overhead, shrieking.
When the smoke cleared, Mauga was gone. Baptiste lay on one end of the pier, battered but breathing. The
prototype device hummed in the air, emitting a protective field of energy around him. It was the only thing that
had kept him alive.
“Good to know that works,” he wheezed, pressing a button on top. The device powered down, and the ring
of energy dissipated. He collected the disc and hobbled toward one of the remaining vessels, a luxury yacht
docked at the far end of the pier. It had The Sainclair painted across its stern in bold, flowing script.```
So was he floating midair on a chunk of the field or was he just on the side or something
I just thought the field may have been holding him in place for something
Wouldn't the disk be obliterated from that explosion? I just noticed that just now.
If its a field of impact suppression, maybe not
Perhaps.
What type of energy does Doomfist use to power his gauntlet
So what are everyone's predictions for Blizzcon?
Which hero is more likely to receive a short
I'm hoping for echo to get announced but don't know about the short
I’m hoping for some founding or early members
Echos probably most likely
But I’m hoping for Liao
I find it really weird that nobody talks about Liao in ow. Like if Liao is one of the founding members then the characters would probably talk about her or reference her in a voice line or something
The only person I could think could be Liao is that one guy kneeling on the left in the Ana photo
Besides that idk who else
Maybe one of the people in Winston’s recall
I had this theory that Echo was actually Liao but looking at it now it seems really unlikely
The Short could be anyone who’s hasn’t had one really
Or just any character at all
They’ve been putting in characters at random before
Such as Hammond
@dry portal that's confirmed not to be Liao
Do we know who it is
no name yet
@worthy rose Since weve gotten nothing about her yet
Something with Echo in it
Is my guess
why did bob rip of mccrees arm anyway?
He didnt
no one knows what happened to Jesses arm I guess
Or very unlikely he did due to McCree not seeing Ashe since he was taken in by blackwatch
but I'm sure it wasn't Bob
McCree lost his arm after overwatch shut down and before winston’s recall
yeah p much
We dont know where he’s been in that time frame but I doubt he’s seen Ashe or Bob again since he has been a good guy and knows that what ashe has been up to has likely been criminal activity which he kinda stops now
Esketit
So who exactly is Michael Chu
Is he like the head of the ow lore or something
Or a game dev
he's the head writer for Overwatch
Ooooooooo
basically the guy in charge of the lore
That makes sense
they do have other writers, but he gets final say
I always thought McCree took his arm of on his own
he's the one who writes most of the dialogue in the game, and is present during recording sessions
why would he do that?
I mean for one I thought from a voice line between him and torb
he was being sarcastic
Secondly maybe for being able to Phan the hammer or melee faster
Since he always uses his right arm
If only I could actually open that
Genji, how'd you ever get used to... you know. It was hard enough for me and it was just the one arm.
I dont think he would willingly remove his arm just to be able to fan the hammer faster
Genji lost most of his body
Chu confirms his lower torso and legs are still there
his torso, left arm and thighs are still intact
but his right arm and legs below the knees are prosthetics
and he may have some artificial organs, but it's hard to tell
Hanzo was told to get Genji to help him lead the family by the clan elders
we don't know exactly what they told him, but they may have said to kill Genji if he won't cooperate (it is a crime family, after all)
so Hanzo fought Genji with swords - Hanzo clearly won
they may have used their dragons - that would explain the extent of the damage and the burns you can see on his face
So like did he torture him first or something?
we don't really know
Damn
Seems kinda brutal for hanzo
Although I guess we have a more matured version of him
Hanzo is a trained assassin
So was he gonna be designed as the families assasin or was he just trained as such
It's also possible that Hanzo didn't cut Genji's limbs off, but they were removed as part of the cyberization process
there's a slash on the scroll on Hanamura that implied Hanzo slashed Genji across the back, possibly severing his spine
Genji says he agreed to being cyberized because he wanted to walk again
a powerful slash across the back like that would have left him crippled for life
Damn
That sounds rly brutal
I mean atleast he lives in an age where nanohealing and advanced cybernetics exist
Now he’s a cool cyborg ninja
So what I’ve also wondered about Genji is did he still have his superhuman abilities before becoming a cyborg
Ik obviously they enhanced them but did he have them before
I don't think being able to deflect bullets is related to the dragons
that's probably a cyborg thing
like double jumping
I thought it may have been since Hanzo uses the dragons to enchant his bow for storm arrow
Isn’t double jumping nearly impossible to do realistically?
yes
naturally anyway
Isn't a video game double jump (and triple jump) the closest thing as the Triple Jump in the Olympics, where you jump again as soon as you hit the ground?
Doesn't change the fact that it's a cool ability.
the triple jump is used for distance not height like double jumps in videogames are used
Double jumping is possible with current technology however the energy and machinery required makes it insanely impractical
yeah
Doing it to the same level as genji can is either impossible without killing the person or just impossible in general
Now dash on the other hand may be very possible
Anyone know the speed of dash?
The double jump you're talking about isnt a double jump
With technology
Jumping is the action of the force of the ground pushing you into the air thanks to Newton's Third Law
If you do that in the air, science or not
There is no force to act against you
So more like a boost
unless you compress the air molecules enough in theory
If you're talking about attatching jet engines to your feet
That's not the same either
Like a smaller scale of a jetpack?
Yeah thats not a double jump
there is currently no way to compress air enough so that it works like a floor or surface so as of right now there is no way to properly double jump unless you have another platform to jump on
Yeah, that's true. The time between initiation and back to ground is far to low than you need to recontract your legs and initiate another jump, because a regular person's jumping ability is pathetic (aside of using a stand).
yup
Is there any material you could use to create a platform for a split second that you can jump off of a second time?
Or is that still beyond anything we have
as of right now no
So are we better off just increasing jumping height with something like an exoskeleton?
Because energy, amount of machinery needed?
a mix of both because you have to increase force with the ammount of weight of the user and the machienery and doing that requires more and more energy
I know the exoskeletons being tested for military purposes soak up a hell of a lot of power
yeah
So I wonder if the force required might seriously injure the user in some cases
Depending on how high you’re jumping
maybe we have gotten really good at absorbing or redistributing forces just look at things like car shocks
Much Bigger jetpack in real life than in the game?
this is my best example of the most current technology that would work similar to her jump jet
yeah you essentially have 3 jet engines strapped on u
So basically if your earplugs malfunction you’re going deaf forever
Or earmuffs? I’m not sure what they call them
It’s interesting to see
yeah
At least we know pharah isn’t completely beyond our limits
Unlike some certain talking monkeys
yeah but the hand held six round rocket launcher is still a ways off
Well yeah
ok but like where is my boy zenyatta's lore?
Concussive blast is probably the most realistic part if her kit
zenyatta and lore? How dare you utter those words in the same sentence
im a zenyatta main
Same
but where the lore be
True
he's a floating omnic monk from nepal that is all about peace
He is monk, he is mentor to genji, he is one of the youngest character , he has ultimate balls
yeah but like hes an omnic so was he built a monk or did he do something before that that made him want to be peaceful
he wasn't built to be a monk
"BIOGRAPHY
Real Name: Tekhartha Zenyatta, Age: 20
Occupation: Wandering Guru, Adventurer
Base of Operations: Shambali Monastery, Nepal (formerly)
Affiliation: The Shambali (formerly)
"TRUE SELF IS WITHOUT FORM."
Zenyatta is an omnic monk who wanders the world in search of spiritual enlightenment. It is said that those who cross his path are never the same again.
Years ago, following the Omnic Crisis, a group of outcast omnic robots experienced what they described as a spiritual awakening. They abandoned their preprogrammed lives to establish a communal monastery deep in the Himalayas. After many years of meditation on the nature of existence, they came to the belief that they were more than artificial intelligences and that, like humans, they possessed the essence of a soul.
Recognizing the spiritual equality they held with humans, the monks, led by the enigmatic robot known as Tekhartha Mondatta, sought to heal the wounds caused by the Omnic Crisis a generation earlier and bring humans and robots back into societal harmony. Their message was embraced by millions around the world, and they became global celebrities.
But one monk, Zenyatta, disagreed with this new direction. He believed that the way to repair the problems between humans and omnics was not through dogmatic teaching but through interpersonal connection and engagement.
Ultimately, Zenyatta followed his own path. He chose to leave the monastery and wander the world, helping those he meets to overcome their personal struggles and find inner peace. But, when necessary, he will fight to protect the innocent, be they omnic or human."
that is from the offical overwatch site
i know
And that’s all folks
ughhh
why is it so important for Zen to get lore?
Because a lot of people want kore for him
yup
a lot of people want lore for every hero
Lore*
he's the only character without some kind of epic backstory like everyone else most characters have backstory and videos made about their backstory
only 2 of the launch heroes have videos about their backstories
Zenyatta has a pretty boring backstory compared to the rest of them
Nothing about zen really stands out against the other characters
solider, winston, dva, bastion, reinhardt
all of them have backstory videos
hanzo and genji as well
Soldiers isn’t really backstory
Reinhardt’s is backstory as well as an animated short
Tracers Origin Story I have no rights on this video. Its from Blizzard Entertainment at Gamescom were they announced it.
Find out the origins of the masked vigilante known as Soldier: 76. Learn more about Soldier 76: http://blizz.ly/Meet76 Sign Up for Beta: http://bit.ly/JoinOv...
only Tracer and Soldier have origin videos out of the launch heroes
winston has one to i could almost swear it
@peak escarp the Tracer one isn't even uploaded on the official channel
and has lots of audio malfunctions
it's the best we have
Recall is your Winston Origins
If you can argue that
The only non-post-release heroes to have Origin Shorts, or something similar to them
Are Tracer, Soldier 76
And the Junkers
A Moment in Crime - Junkers: http://bit.ly/2fMsVYB
Their spree of mayhem and chaos has caused untold millions in property damage around the world. But who are these two deranged Junkers, and what is behind th...
This was basically an origin short
Before they decided they liked the origin story format more
And used that for post launch
I'd like to get more info on Zen, but I'd like the story to move forward a whole lot more
Shooting Star has taught me a valuable lesson about the monkey paw
I actually thought about this now, but could it be possible that omniums can become mobile after a large amount of time? There is an omnic in the South China Sea acting as a sort of mobile carrier for smaller attack units.
It seems to produce its own units as well.
possibly
people will get mad over anything
especially the big bad gay
it was announced the same way ana was announced to have a husband
i have yet to see one complaint on how ana being straight is forced diversity
not really?
Ana was announced to have a husband (Pharah's father) outside the game first
exactly so
announced
in official lore
without any impact on the way the hero is played
no voicelines
ana got one spray
soldier was announced in official lore without any impact on the way he was played
no voicelines or sprays
you said Ana having a husband was announced the same way as Soldier being gay
through official lore from blizzard in written form
showing Ana missing her wedding ring isnt the same as Soldier whipping out 8x10 glossies
photographs
but...??
what is the difference
between the ana and soldier origin novella
and the cinematic for ana?
why is one more credible as a source of lore?
cinematic?
Ana hasn't been in any cinematics
she has
it was in the same short story
origin trailers are not the same as cinematics
ahh, my bad then
when people say cinematic, they mean animated shorts
but what's the difference between the origin story and the novella in terms of context?
yeah, my bad haha
Ana rubbing her finger and thinking of her failed marriage is something an actual person would do
and talking about your partner isn't?
iirc the context of the "big reveal soldier is gay" was that he mentioned that he had someone he had to leave behind, his boyfriend/husband
Soldier, a wanted man with few belonging, pulling out massive photographs of a boyfriend from 30 years ago is not something a normal person would do
first off, this is 60 years in the future
people dont even carry photographs today
a lot of people have treasured belongings
some people carry photographs
some carry rings
like ana
he would have it on a phone or some other digital device
i doubt a wanted man will put personal data on a phone
secondly, it's weird to still have pictures of an ex boyfriend from 30 years ago
i guess it is weird, but what makes the weirdness of it into an issue
i mean
we can't analyze human psychology and behaviour in an fps game set 60 years into the future where dragons possess the spirit of ninja swords and bows
i think it's just optimal to leave soldier having a strange obsession with someone who is over him at that
it's still based on real Earth, people should still act like people
and not look into it as some sort of either agenda pushing or story ruining new thing
people should act like people?
people do awful things
people do weird things
I dont care that he's gay, I like that decision
i don't care that he's gay either
I just don't think it was done very well
i just think you're overanalyzing the psychology of a fictional soldier
he's probably got various mental disorders from his time in the war
trust issues
insomnia
he handles it well, because he's tough
you can't just assume that
but it plagues us
you can't just assume that it's weird for him to carry photographs of his loved ones
I'm not saying it's weird for Soldier to do that
i have a video saved on my PC of a youtuber saying that he liked my name back in 2011
I'm saying it's weird for anyone
that's only 8 years
i feel somewhat compelled to keep it
only 8 years?
where's the line between memorabilia and weird?
is it the middle ground, at 19 years?
or 15?
or is it just a strange line you can't really cross but it is somehow assumed you are weird for being near or over
now who's trying to psychoanalyze
i'm psychoanalysing your false psychoanalysis
not a fictional character
i'm the defense lawyer for the novella
I'm not psycho analyzing anything
you are though
how
"it's weird to have a photo of a boyfriend from 30 years ago"
deciding it's weird is analysis
of soldier's thoughts
I'm not trying to get into his head and understand why he's doing it
I just think its weird
I'm stating an opinion
i'm stating an opinion too
then stop arguing
that's not how arguments work
I'm allowed to have an opinion
arguments are conflicts of opinion
so am i, and i would like to discuss why i believe mine is somewhat superior
other people here think Soldier's story was poorly written
you can exit the discussion if you want, man
i didn't like the writing of it either haha
but i think it was an effective way of showing soldier's character
he has people he cares for and feelings
of course he is
have you heard his voicelines?
"I'm a man on a mission - stay out of my way"
"Young punks. get off my lawn"
yes
but i think it also portrays him as human
which is a good juxtaposition to the small amount of character you see in his voicelines and animations
i think soldier is shown as rigorous, and fierce
it's nice to see he has feelings, and people he cares for
the story, in terms of sheer writing skill, was like a mediocre pulp novel
but i think it accurately portrayed his soft side
Chu doesn't have much experience writing short fiction
WYLB was much better in terms of writing
Woah this is the first time I’ve seen more than 30 new messages in this chat
the Baptiste story
WYLB = Baptiste
Nice
Bastet = Ana
ahh, okay
What You Left Behind
Wait who’s Bastet again
i personally like the comics more as a medium
I like both
it portrays character more
short stories give you more of their internal thoughts
if the game had a singleplayer with a story, we could see more of the character dialogue and personality
i feel you should build stories off your character and not build a character off your stories
which is why the comic medium works better with the more visual display of the Overwatch heroes' abilities and relation with each other
if we had a singleplayer similiar to, say, a call of duty game
then the short stories would work amazingly alongside the singleplayer plot lines
I've never played CoD
ahh
the principle is, missions with dialogue between characters, short cutscenes to progress between parts of a level, long cutscenes between levels
I'd prefer a multiplayer PvE campaign
i feel multiplayer pve's are hard to pull off
CoDs older titles have great campaigns
