He was going to Gibraltar to get the Overwatch mainframe with presumably the conditions and locations of former overwatch agents
which I'm still questioning like why
It's like killing retired FBI or MI6 Agents who don't really do anything anymore so like why?
Can’t wait to get more lore in a year when they replace storms rising
we'll get more before then
we'll get 3 heroes, 3 maps and 2 animated shorts
plus new hero interactions, and comics are in production so it's likely they'll come out before the end of the year
I wonder if it was possible that reaper is working WITH talon, not FOR talon
I think that's a better description
Reaper is working with Talon to achieve his own goals
just like Sombra
Exactly!
Another thought came to my mind: I wonder if Overwatch had a mole in their organization.
I'm not so sure
that's implied by the soldier origin
but besides moira we've yet to see a character to truly outright betray them in the current timeline
i mean in the past
everyone seems for the most part good and not really an evil character who got into overwatch and sold them out tho i do think this is a character that needs to be explored further because story wise it'd make sense than us to just settle with talon goons who pretended to be overwatch members blowing up the swiss hq
so Talon works for him?
partly? Like does a CEO work for a company or does the company work for the CEO
He isnt a CEO
More like
Part of the board of directors
Does the company work for any given member of the board of directors
Or the board as a whole
Or what if the Swiss HQ explosion was set up for show?
I'm just saying what if that event was to create a villan a.k.a reaper as a way to get info about talon?
but
doomfist and moira and sombra and assumingly the black watch turned talon goons knows that he's gabriel reyes
@oak axle And bring down what was left of Overwatch? That barely makes sense, even if you ignore Reaper killing former Overwatch agents.
What does vigilante activity actually mean exactly? Is it kind of the same as criminal activity?
It’s when someone with no legal authority steps in to stop the bad dudes in ways that are usually illegal
For example a thief who steals things that other thieves stole
A man who kills murderers
yessir, murder under pretty much most pretenses is still murder
unless you're in texas
Robin Hood (all adaptations), Carmen Sandiego (Netflix adaptation), or John Marsden (Red Dead Redemption) are all good examples
Hopefully you get at least one of those.
Hey so do we have any dev confirmation of when doom and new guy met?
Also, this. Pharaohs used to wear fake beards to show their higher status
Not the type to bodyshame but, this dude has a big chin
still looks like tosh to me
gabriel tosh, wings of liberty
he has the head of a rlly handsome dood
@dapper shuttle umm, 6 years ago, duh
it's clearly implied to be happening at the same time as the Overwatch mission to capture Max
Isn't it kinda implied that they meet for the first time during the cutscene for Storm Rising?
Isn't that basically the dev's confirmation?
and if it was a time lapse, they definitely would have told us
Is Horizon Lunar Colony in current time occupied by the apes who killed all the scientists?
Yes.
Oh damn
I hope Overwatch will take the base back at some point
Also where is the Interstellar Journey Space Station?
All I can find about it is that it was constructed by Lucheng Interstellar and that it suffered emergency failure.
it's one of the hinted side stories they're likely to do when not dealing with the talon thing
Along with the mei atmospheric anomaly
and the sombra illuminati
So us players being able to play on the map is lore wise incorrect?
Since no human has been up there since the uprising of the apes?
But Horizon Lunar Colony was constructed to advance the exploration into space, so I think it would be safe to assume that they still have not gone further than the moon when it comes to occupying planets. Oh wait nevermind -_- Space stations can float in space, don't need to be built on a planet xD
damn it
kreepers, although I appreciate the video and image, please keep this lore related channel pls
I think it's weird how nobody did anything about the apes in more or less a decade
True, you'd think they would have sent a team up there to retake it
In the time that has passed at least
also... what's up with Mercy's comment about Winston's bones?
When?
Wow that quite ironic. Because I have a screenshot of playing Mercy where here body is glitched lmao xD
E girls join the chat
Mercy is pointing out that prolonged time in space can weaken a person's bones
Also my comment earlier was quite stupid since there is a difference between space station and space colonization
it's a way to namedrop Dr. Chao into the conversation
^
Dr. Chao?
Cause Dr. Chao is the one presumably in the wheel chair at the lichang interstellar map
There's a lot of lore that you have to dig super deep to find the connection Seffay
I think there's another line (the one about bone strength) that goes in there, but someone made this clip for my post
Dr. Chao from what we know given the voice lines and map hints was seemingly a scientist from the moon who after a long period of time on the moon had her bones weakened from being on the moon and when she came to earth she was assumingly stuck in a wheel chair and didn't choose cybernetic enhancements or prosthetics to let her walk again
sure, let's just chop off perfectly functional limbs and give her cybernetics
These are pretty much all of the interactions in Storm Rising. There's a couple of generic voice lines I didn't include as I felt they wouldn't add anything ...
but they're not functional, she's literally stuck in a wheel chair presumably and Ana has a cybernetic eye despite it probably being normal
not everyone who uses a wheelchair can't walk
@peak escarp doesn't Horizon have artificial gravity generators though?
So being out in space for too long can permanently disfunction your legs?
she's weakened by her time in space, so she probably can't stand for long
I think if you're using a wheel chair, good chance you can't walk
otherwise you'd be using a walking stick
a lot of elderly people use wheelchairs because they don't have the strength or endurance to walk long distances
they could make her use a wheelchair by default, but then swap it out for an exoskeleton once released as a hero
or, if they want to feel gimmicky, a weaponized hoverchair
I don't think she'll be a hero
gfg
there was an episode of The Orville that I watched that covered basically the same thing
a crew member from a planet with high gravity was losing bone strength from being away from her home planet for too long, and had to use a (hover) wheelchair when she went back
A better question is why she doesn't use an exo-suit or something like that
that sounds cumbersome
and not really practical for someone who's going to be sitting at a desk most of the day anyway
probably yes
it is strange how hard light became a thing so fast
my theory is that mercy uses light to fly
she releases photons from her wings for lift
soldier 76 gay lol
@little fulcrum S***posting will result in a loss of access
As stated in the rules, if you haven't noticed, or even checked the rules, please go and read them before you discuss things here.
on exo-suit kinda thing
there is currently a similar device, a simplified exostructure, tha allows people with weak legs to stand and walk a but better, sorta a smal lightweight exo for the legs and waist
so it is probable
but yes maybe the doc can walk, jsut not for too long
so not worth going full cyber for it
also there is a HUGE difference between prolonged stay on moon and space station.
i mean there is some gravity on the moon and that makes a huge difference
so fast
Might have existed for the past 30 years
Based on the technology in Reinhardt's suspiciously similar barrier shield
Man, i so wish they release some new lore
So the Talon archives skin shows Lacroix, Widow without the blue pigmented skin, does that mean she was always part of Talon and killed Gerard on her own or was she kidnapped, brainwashed, then killed Gerard on her own, then had her heart rate slowed down to become Widowmaker? I'm really confused about her background
she was brainwashed
founded by overwatch eventually
then in her sleep killed gerard and returned to talon as her programming and brainwashing commanded
thats when they continued her conditioning and brainwashing that turned her blue
like a sort of trap/sleeper agent type thing
!!wiki Storm_Rising/Quotes
For more information about the game, please refer to the wiki: https://overwatch.gamepedia.com/Storm_Rising/Quotes
I put together most of the interactions.
If someone else wants to clean it up.
Or make a page for the Don Rumbotico Distillery/Dr. Chao.
I'm a little disappointed that we didn't actually get a Talon event
When did Mei get out of the cryo? Was this before current Overwatch?
After Recall
As a Zenyatta main, I really hope they will expand on his lore a bit more. I think he is the hero we have the least lore of.
The only zen lore we have is that he helped genji deal with his new body
True
I wonder whose next up for a cinematic ^^
Nah, they probably won't but I can hope
I wonder who'll be hero 31
Because we know both echo and sojourn won't
I mean it does not need to be a full on cinematic, can just be like a comic or whatever
Hopefully we'll see him in an archive event ^^
And yes, anticipating next hero and speculating is always fun
Did they?
listen
don't listen to YourOverwatch or TGN
Both of them know basically as much as you do and spread a lot of misinformation when it comes to the game and everything else
and often YourOverwatch spreads some really ludicrous and dumb ideas
They just spread uneccessary hype?
no
they report basically what everyone already knows or will know
or will constantly push the idea of "Overwatch 2"
and overwatch isn't a game that get's a sequal atleast not anytime soon
Jeff talked about the pve event during someone's stream
Probs OhNickel
a lot of gaming-related reporting just rolls with absurd fan ideas
I don't think you mean PVE I think you mean jeff talking about the anniversary event because that's the area where we are guaranteed new content
we aren't getting another PVE event anytime soon
Idk man
unless they actually changed something for junkenstein
which personally I don't have a lot of faith in them of doing so
then we ain't gonna get another PVE event until next archives
Tbh the new archives wasn't as good as the older ones
Retribution is still the best for me
and yes I'm kinda mad because I want the stupid genji spray but can't win on legendary
But it seems like a filler episode tbh
I agree with you; a general consensus is that this event was mostly disappointing
I wonder whether they've got anything in store for next Junkenstein
what did we get the last time, anyway?
nothing
we got nothing
besides retribution
none of the events changed
still yeti hunt
junkenstein remained the same
still ctf
still lucio ball
we literally got nothing
Junkenstine is p meh tbh
oh, yeah – I think they expanded the range of heroes available in standard Junkenstein
and added Tracer
they added some voicelines
but we didn't actually get anything
Tracer was a wisp of sorts
but we never got that skin for her
and we also didn't get ronin genji despite it being in the comic
Oh btw any skin predictions
I'm saying genji will get a new legendary because god he hasn't had one in some time
not really
Tracer and... Brigitte, right?
the upcomming event was anniversary
and anniversary is actually weird and random
we don't know what skin we're getting
Yeah which makes it great
i mean then i can't guess cause it's random
I mean last time we got genji power ranger lucio jazz boy and a robot torb
there's not really a pattern to see and go "yea probs this"
Widow, Torb, Genji, and Zen were added the year before
Ashe just god a legendary so
yea but it's a mixed reaction
Blizzard adds legendaries with time in mind
half the people hate it
half love it
and i'm pretty sure only bob is the one thing ppl actually like
So since genji hasn't gotten a legendary in a long time, even though he has one for anniversary, he's probably getting another.
Same way mccree got a new skin even though he already had blackwatch
naw I think they're gonna chill with him
I'm not gonna bother guessing since they don't really do it with tally marks
"Yes so as you can see genji last legendary was this so we will give him one at x time"
I mean if we're talking statistics, he should have gotten one this archives so I'm not too sure
I mean it's jeff, you never know
I mean by that logic
brig should get a new skin then cause she hasn't gotten a skin since i think like the summer games one
mb lijang
lunar event
Did Overwatch start to fall because of people being paranoid and untrustworthy all of a sudden?
Yes and no
Overwatch fell because Retribution ousted the blackwatch team of Overwatch
which was the covert team meant to do things illegally and under the table
torture, kidnapping, assassinations, etc...
that shook the world's trust in OW
it's implied that overwatch fell from outside forces like talon and potentially some traitors inside of the organization that also led to it's downfall
And because of conflict between Gabriel Reyes and Jack Morrison?
who these traitors are? We don't necessarily know but the strongest case is Sombra
We never actually get much hint of that actually
besides Reyes and Morrison in storm rising talking about shutting down the strike team
we never get any interaction in the past that implied they were fighting or arguing or had strong ill will against one another
it's implied that reyes was jealous of morrison because he became leader of overwatch and he didn't which we later found out wasn't true and he was actually happy to not have to burden the responsibility of leader of Overwatch
Where and when did we find this out?
We only know that Trust was falling from overwatch probably from internal traitors, talon forces continuing their actions against overwatch, as well as probably government officials in talon's pocket like antonio and how the italian government was in his pocket
Chu said this and I believe it was in a newspaper article really early on. That implied that reaper and soldier was fighting but it turns out they were writing it from the perspective of an unreliable narrator
So does that mean that we are still not sure how HQ blew up?
nope
Besides the soldier origin story
where he talked about how overwatch was destroyed by forces inside and out
we have literally no idea how the Swiss HQ blew up and shortly after marking the end of OW
And so where are people getting the information from that there was a fight?
You said "writing it from the perspective of an unreliable narrator"? What do you mean with that?
So stories told from an unreliable narrator are interesting in that you have people saying things from their perspectives but it's not necessarily the objective truth
an example would be from Game of Thrones
@full basin
do you know the show?
Okay good so you know who Jon Snow's real father is right?
Yes I do
Okay then this works
Basically Raegar, Jon's real father is never really seen in the show in the current present but we get a vibe for what he's like based on the people who talk about him
Like if you ask Daenery's brother and King Robert
they'll say some stuff about how he was a terrible person who did terrible things but if you ask that other old knight guy who died from the people of the harpies he said
"Raegar never liked killing" and a lot of different characters who have met raegar or knew of him didn't see him in the same light that King Robert saw him
So all the characters are as we see, an unreliable narrator; King robert especially
And who was the unreliable narrator with this situation?
The news people who were talking about Gabriel and Jack like they had a tension and bitter rivalry where Gabriel wasn't a fan of Jack being leader of overwatch
and by news people
I mean blizzard actually made up a fake news paper CNN type thing where they report the news of the world
and from reading those you can get a glimpse on how the people of the world view events and that's a method of getting lore out to us
the last news thing we ever got was from the recent storm rising with the "Havana Sun"
\
there are various other news paper things from like Atlas News but we haven't gotten one from specifically Atlas news since I believe Retribution
it's one of the easiest and fastest ways to get lore out to the audience but they don't do it often and it makes me sad
am I making sense here?
Also there was an interview where it was either Jeff or Chu talking about how Gabriel and Jack's relationship wasn't what people initially thought but those interviews aren't posted on the site so you have to dig and find those yourself
just that specific one
most news papers are in english
the blizz team tries to keep faithful to the country of the story they're telling or hints
Havana is in cuba
hence the spanish
But there is a translated version, right?
yea
if you want to learn more about them you can either go to the playoverwatch site and scroll down but it's a lot and most of it is them announcing a new competitive season, world cup, event, etc... and not so much about the news
Ah thanks
Omg haha XD
I love how the people in the comments of those Atlas News posts are actually like roleplaying
I can't stop laughing, like I find it so funny and love it at the same time xD
Like I am not judging them
Honestly
you can learn a crap ton just by going through the gamepedia
they have all the sources at the bottom so u can find everything yourself
Very true and handy indeed ^^
any other questions or things you'd like cleared up?
Oh wow I just went to the lore page about Sojourn. And they even link sources like stuff that Jeff Kaplan briefly said in a livestream timestamped
Thats so handy
Overwatch lore is really intricate and has a lot of stuff and thought that goes into it that isn't so blatantly in your face so people think there's not much of a story
it's there
just you gotta really look for it
I gotta say, I am really enjoying this lore study? I guess I could say haha, but yeah just reading about the lore has made me love this game a lot more
Same with any game tbh. If you know a lot of lore about a video game and then you play the game it just enriches your playing experience
Oh damn, Jeff says that D.Va is getting an awesome skin with anniversary that will "Break the internet"
that wasn't a spoiler tho, that was hinted for like 3 years
3-4
how long until something no longer becomes spoiler
I know, I'm just teasing
What the R+L=J?
yeh
Hehehe xD
also Discord does have spoiler formatting
yea ik, i love it
Damn now I am excited for Anniversary
If I remember correctly, were skins not even gonna be a thing in Overwatch at first, but it was so highly requested that they did? Like it wasn't a priority to add skins into the game?
I know, since launch, but I remember Jeff or someone from the team revealing the Origin Skins, and were they not the first skins to be revealed?
I followed the game from the moment it was announced on Blizzcon, I remember the hype. Although I knew I wasnt gonna get it until I got it last year. I use to play on a Mac
Oh wait, I did first get it on console quite a bit earlier so thats a lie lol
The anniversary skins from what I remember were like original concept designs they thought were cool
hence the sym one that had her original design
and the sentai genji skin
I love Orisa's skin
So pretty
Although I am still not sure I enjoy her that much. Like, I like her character and all but gameplay wise not sure
Same for Brigitte
gameplay and lore are entirely different things
I'm in overwatch for the lore
the gameplay while i'd like to think i'm good i really am in it for the story
same
What did Efi actually change about the OR15 model? Did she just enhance the intelligence and ability? Cause aesthetically she did change, but like the model remained the same no?
if the game didn't have lore to dig into I would have dropped it ages ago
!!!lore wiki efi
she changed some visual parts
XD
gave it an African aesthetic

!!lorewiki efi
For more information about the game, please refer to the wiki: https://overwatch.gamepedia.com/efi
efi doesn't redirect
ah
but yeah she gave a fresh coat of paint, added better intelligence, and also gave her the abilities
and designed her personality module
"tobelstein reactor" is a reference to Zarya and is the thing that gives her the Halt
Damn, would it be fair to say that Efi has potential to become an even better engineer than Torbjorn?
damn prodigys
personally i'm wondering what the area of focus would be
like my money is on oasis
we haven't had much lore for oasis for a long while
Oasis is the main area of intrigue for me
I think the world's first and only Technocracy
i wanna see what that's like
@worthy rose the area of focus for what?
"personally i'm wondering what the area of focus would be"
what are you talking about here?
oooooh
I was asking what area of the world would we be revisiting cause hammond was a reintroduction into junkertown
Ashe was a reintroduction of Route 66 so I was wondering like
where would the next area we'd revisit and explore or elaborate more on
Baptiste was an introduction of Cuba and Talon
And with the Bastet comic we got reintroduced to Anubis/egypt
The only real area that aren't flushed out is Hollywood, Oasis, and like the Deathmatch maps
he'd be a character with direct connection to Oasis and Petra, and a looser connection to Illios and Ayutthaya
that'd fill a lot of places
he'd basically be that guy recovering tons of relics, and unwittingly working for Talon
maybe Max could be an anonymous sponsor or something
some of the statues from Illios ended up in Rialto and Chateau Guillard
wouldn't that be explained as Widow's family comes from money hence how she even is able to live in a chateau?
Idk, there was lots of speculation surrounding the statues
so I'm kinda basing it on that
@dapper shuttle can tell you more about it
I would say the unwitting Talon link could be tied through Oasis if anything. It is still fairly mysterious, and Moira is one of the... I forgot the word, gonna say one of the "chairmen"
Minister
How did Doomfist escape from prison just by punching through one wall?
It’s a maximum security lockup, surely there’s more than one wall separating him from the outside
Wasn't there a thing that said Reaper assisted his escape or am I mistaken?
reaper assisted in his getaway
and also doomfist's hand is not his biological hand
they replaced it with a real looking prosthetic of sorts that i'd imagine is stronger than his real hand
Actually that brings up an interesting question
Why would he leave jail now of all times when it seemingly looked as if he could have escaped at any time
“Sensed that the time had come for him to return”
He was getting information from the outside world
He just chose when he felt was the right time to leave, by the looks of it
but like
what incident or event could have been the inciting incident that he planned for?
Mondatta's death?
It's either that or how the Talon organization was being handled in his absence.
so whats with goddess spray for baptiste?
it's his tattoo
Sorry wrong chat
the tattoo itself is probably a voodoo goddess
people always want to know the stories behind the heroes' missing limbs
I want to know the story/meaning behind their tattoos
I’d love to know if they have like embarrassing tattoos they got when they were young
That’d be fun
or any tattoos we don't know about/haven't seen
For Genji and Torbjorn, we pretty much know how they got maimed.
For Doomfist, we know the when, but not the how.
For McCree, we also kind of have a timeframe, but again, we don't know how he lost his arm.
Junkrat we can assume through conjecture and (noncanon) HotS dialogue.
Symmetra's the biggest mystery, though.
Genji's not married
Doomfist literally punched the walls to go out of jail and literally planned reaper or someone from talon to pick him up
What?
i read that wrong
lol
could you imagine the outrage
also junkrat and hots don't have any canonicity with one another
the mercy genji shippers would riot
Depends who he was married to
but yeah
Symmetra's arm is the biggest mystery in terms of missing limbs
I wonder when/how Zarya got her scar
Weird how we haven't seen a single limb loss, but we've seen 2/3 missing eyes.
2/3?
We've seen how Ana and Reinhardt lost their eyes.
and doesn't the description from White Dome count?
But not Torb.
Eeeehn I guess? We still don't know who they were fighting and how it happened, but I suppose it works.
losing a limb is a lot more graphic than losing an eye
they can't show it with a T rating
They can get around it.
Have it out of frame while someone says, "B-But McCree, your arm!"
And he says "Don't y'all worry 'bout that none yeehaw"
. . .
maybe you should leave the writing to the professionals
but I get what you mean
I do think they'll show it eventually
maybe not anyone else's, but McCree's seems important enough
since 2 characters have commented on it
things mentioned in interactions seem like they'll be important
I get the sense Soujorn doesn't trust Winston
She has more than one line where she subtly implies Winston might kill the target
Makes sense to be distrustful of the recent hire talking berserker ape from the moon, I suppose...
yeah
so why hasnt blizz made the talon units skins for characters
Grunt-76/Enforcer-Reaper/Sniper-Widow/Assassin-Genji/Tank-Rienhart
If it's not lore relevant, it doesn't go here
!!loreonly
This channel is for serious discussion strictly related to the lore of Overwatch. Shitposting will result in a loss of access.
Enforcer-Reaper wtf
plus their character models aren't the same
Tank-Rein is just a no
sniper-widow might work, but it would just confuse people. Same with assassin genji.
There's already Talon Widowmaker anyway
That skin is interesting. If the skin is intended to be accurate, then I guess it must be her as a recent introduction? After returning to Talon but before the treatments kicked in?
Though by the time she shoots Ana, she's blue. So sometime within that window?
idk just was a thought
the only examples we have of heroes having skins for other people are Balderich, Null Sector Bastion, and Null Sector Orisa
and they only work because they share the same model
and have basically the same abilities and design
id mainly like to see 76 get a talon grunt skin
like how he has the venom and alpine skin
the Talon unit models don't look like any of the heroes
i just love skins that change the character
it only works with characters that are basically the OG character regardless
sure they dont exactly fit but some kind of rendition
also when can orisa get omnic war skin with sword melee
Not to mention the Talon enemy models are generally lower poly. It would be kinda jarring to see them recreated in bizarre hi-poly ways. The skins in Talon style are fine enough
talon skins are my favorite, Bap looks the best so far. the armor really sells it.
And yeah, I don't see why we don't have a crisis recolor for the OR14 yet. Sure, the Null Sector paint scheme is prettier, but still... seems fairly simple
they do have same skins with just diffrent paint jobs
I figured Baptiste was designed as a Talon homage, since he fires in burst just like the Troopers do
sure it can happen tho
(Although they fire in automatic whenever shooting at a reflecting genji)
but it's not really worth it
they only have Legendary skin recolours with the OG legendary skins.
ah yes
Yeah, it was mostly in the first year that legendary skins still got pallete swaps
But they stopped doing that eventually
don't play Mei much so it didn't come to mind
Also remember the first generation of summer skins. EVERY legendary came in pairs
I hope that in the future that they add some skin options. Like with Reaper's Blackwatch skin. It had him hoodless but in the comics he wears it with a hood. It would be cool to have a function to raise the hood.
it's probably never going to happen...sooooooooo
that'd be neat
Meh
sure it'd be cool to play as an OR-14 from the Honour and Glory short but it's not gonna be top priority
I mean if they do that, it'd take a while
Baptiste was a Talon grunt
and that's a lot of effort for so little
also where are those Bap interactions
they'll be added eventually
guess there still getting his figured out
when they can wrangle the VAs
Baptiste was a Talon Grunt/combat medic
trying to coordinate the schedules of 31 busy professionals must be a nightmare
plus the voice director, recording techs and Chu
ive liked how the interactions are longer with ashe
just more small pieces like that
Gaku Space (Genji) says he goes in to record once per event, but he lives in LA
yeah, I hope they do more longer interactions
yeah that'd be neat
or interactions between more than 2 heroes
that would be unpractical
but that would rely on those heroes all being picked in the same team
which is hard to predict
IT should be between only characters that have strong bonds
like Brig, Rein and Torb
yeah
they would be rare ones
I've been wanting interactions that are player-triggered
like voice lines, except certain heroes might have a response
Did any of you hear the Easter voicelines today?
there are Easter lines?
Yeah that’s the only one I heard
I didn’t know if there were a few more or if that was it lmao
ah
there's a few lines that play seasonally
like the Genji/Mercy Valentines lines, the New Years lines
ooooh so the dva one isn’t new?
ooooh cool
yes it is canon "D.Va is not the easter bunny" :3
I would not say Bept is a grunt, more like a smll time squad leader.
He would be at least something like the Enforcer I would say, being a specialized personel of a medic and having superio skills.
But yeah, it is far from being a hero or any decision maker.
But even then hsi pay is great.
Baptiste wasn't a squad leader
Wonder what the regular grunt pays.
he was a Lieutenant
a specialized mook
so a bit better than a grunt
well, Lieutenant is high enough of a rank to not be a grunt really
but his appearance was inspired by the Talon troopers
well supposedly even specialized elite units like assassain shares some similarity
and in terms of rank, Lieutenant is already an officer.
so middle management
in that case he is definitely above an enforcer
This channel is for serious discussion strictly related to the lore of Overwatch. Shitposting will result in a loss of access.
also spoilers
That
If someone posts spoilers, just report them.
@peak escarp on his rank, yes he started out as trooper from bottom
which means talon ahve good upward mobilitya s long as one is capable.
and also means his final rank is high, explaining his good pay and ability to buy and build a clinic.
So other than being a evil organization, talon is treating its own quite well really
on bapt being black... well... technically "black" would not be the correct term, since most people in the area is a bit of a mixed race biologically speaing. But he looks about right as in being common for the general area he is from. That, and when you get killer robots attacking humans, race would not be a worry anymore in ow's world.

Question
Is Tracer still a pilot?
Like, I don't question her ability
But is she still willing to fly, say, the dropships that Overwatch uses?
Or does she stay away from the cockpit?
no doubt. i mean that's months or years' worth of training; you wouldn't just drop a valuable skill
As I said, I don't doubt the ability. But does she still have the will? I can't think of anything for or against that at the moment.
she still fought after she had her accident
she doesn't need to fly planes anymore but i don't think she's not willing

You know who I would love to know more about? Liao :p Him being one of the six first Overwatch members makes him a pretty damn important character
Although strange that we don't have any voice lines, or any interactions without his name being named once? Correct me if I am wrong
Nothing.
I don't think we even know what he looks like. He could just be a name, like others after him
/her
True, it could be a male or female
Also what was Genji's last mission on Overwatch before he left on his journey of acceptance?
Was it the defeat of the Shimada Clan?
am i the only that thinks widow knows sombras betraying Talon
she seems suspicious at the end of the Infiltration cinematic
maybe her heat signature infra-sight could see her sparing Volskya

WTF I literally just watched the Infiltration cinematic and had the same thought before coming here lmao
And that's a good theory
Also, was Hanamura owned by the Shimada Clan?
so mercy only allow genji to drink her coffee
hmmmmmmmmmm
and they stay up at night alone togather
hmmmmmmm
Athena that is in Winston's Cinematic "Recall" is the same AI that came out of the crate in McCree's Cinematic "Reunion", correct?
The AI that came out of the crate in Reunion, is called Echo, a brand new character
No
Athena is an AI that announces the game and also is winston's personal AI
Echo is not Athena
In an early concept design, it was revealed that the bot we see in the original launch cinematic, the robot with the athena logo was in fact Echo however they haven't nailed down the design so the guy who made the design just put it on there
and jeff clarified that to us in an interview during one of the streams
Also no, Baptiste is not a teacher
He's more like a cuban robinhood
Is Moira still part of the Ministries in Oasis?
And is her affiliation with Talon known?
She is one of their leaders
and that is unknown
and by unknown i mean, we as an audience, don't know if the Oasis people know or don't know
the only thing we can do is infer based on what we know about the society there
Oasis is boasted to have the most intelligent society being a technocracy, as well as apparently a famous tourist area since it's restaurants have hours to years on their waiting list, and from us as viewers who get to walk through it, they're seemingly very economically successful. And they also tell us that it's the one of the, if not THE safest place on earth meaning that there is probably high levels of security and also are constructing a massive structure that has already surpassed the world's tallest skyscrapers that no one knows what it does. From how it's been described I'd say it's bordering a utopia/dystopia. A utopia in that people are very intelligent and that people are avidly working to make discoveries that maybe used to help the world as a whole. On the Dystopia side, it would seem that they have little regard for things like ethics since Moira before was disgraced as an unethical geneticist whose experiments couldn't have been replicated in a normal way but since she was seemingly on the seat of Oasis and is one of their heads, It would stand to reason that Moira doesn't have to really worry about ethics here and so potential dystopia of sort
However it's not a traditional dystopia in that people are seemingly free to leave their city whenever where as traditional dystopia is a shitty place where everyone is stuck and forced to live there which we don't really see or have yet to see
So Oasis is the mad scientist dream place. Where ethics are no limits to experimentation?
Not necessarily
It has heads in all fields of science
not much evil room for Archaeology you feel me?
Hahaha XD
Ok true
But Moira her unethical practise is known, and that didn't stop Oasis from taking her in and making her head of Genetics
So likely it's just their belief of "We want to advance humanity and push science without any borders or rules because Science has been stopped too many times before and we don't want that anymore"
I mean yea but I would equate it to something like stem cell research
Ah I see
Stem Cell research's end goal is to figure out how the body and cells develop into their designated function
like how does a cell you grow know to become a red blood cell instead of a bone cell or a skin cell or whatever
the easiest way to advance it, is through looking at humans at their earliest period of development aka fetuses
Oh god
It's a moral question there
Like if you do study stemcells
u could probably fix major ailments like blindness, paralysis, etc...
Damn
or taken to more extremes, you could probably grow body parts and help basically kids who need a heart transplant or whatever else they might need
but on the other hand this would be seen as a pro abortion argument which as you probably know, a good chunk of the population are very against due to their own personal and religious beliefs on the topic as a whole
I'd say Oasis dials this notch and basically says "We want to help people by any means necessary." so they push aside the religious people or people who don't have the stomach for it and push on and work to find cures to cancer, blindness, etc...
You get my drift? @full basin
I do.
But like I said this is for the areas of science that have actual moral and ethical repercussions
Like I said
not much room for evil uncovering old statues or dinosaur bones
Also I thought Symmetra was also part of Oasis, but I think I got confused with her skin xD
I hope we get a map in Utopaea
She would be a fine fit in Oasis though
she would but they don't really need her. Like you played on Oasis. You saw how good they're doing
they don't really need vishkar to do architecture for them
I still find the Hard-Light tech extremely OP xD
it is but there's nothing saying that oasis doesn't have that technology under their belt or can't recreate it on their own
Like, not that I think that Blizzard shouldn't have made it a thing. Like, just being able to build structures out of nothing basically
A company doesn't have sole ownership of a resource. Like imagine if you found a metal more precious than platinum
i always had issue understanding hard light. transforming energy to mass ?????
just because the company found it, doesn't mean they own that resource but granted if they're the only company that can make it then probably
Light is funny in that regard
it's actually not a transformation of energy to mass but actually both
It's how solar Sails work
The mass of photons and light push the sail further and further and in the vaccum of space, there's not really anything to stop it
hmm interesting!!
I mean, we might have some kind of realistic scientific explanation, but this is all set in the future so technology in Overwatch doesn't need to be realistic in todays age.
true
the only thing we know is they ain't magic
Magic doesn't exist in Overwatch from an interview with one of the dev
I was wondering the same thing about Hanzo and Genji's dragons. Same with Zen's orbs. But as Jeff said: In some cases we want things to exist for gameplay reasons that don't need to be supported by lore
I'm guessing some form of tech, maybe structured only to work from the shimada dna. Also in Dragons, they come from Hanzos tattoo, so maybe the tech is implanted in hin via the tat
zen's abilities seemingly don't have any real lore equivalent but we don't really have much on zen
But honestly, I am usually someone who really wants everything to be lore realistic and correct, but with some of the things in Overwatch as said before I don't really mind if it's a bit crazy and unexplainable and just say its futuristic science for the sake of it existing in gameplay and just the idea being cool
I wanna see more about Oasis
lmao xD
Same though, yesterday you said the same but only today I read about it and now im on the same boat
it's one of the least developed areas right alongside Hollywood, the Death matches, and I think that's about it
but I don't think we'll see much of anything in Hollywood since like there's nothing really important going on in hollywood
America seemingly has no issue with omnics and beside the American south with the deadlock gang
it seems pretty okay
The only way you'd put it in is by tying it with reaper since he is from LA
Are Omnics like Zen not able to be taken control over by a God AI as we saw happen in Pharah's comic. The omnic being Okoro
We actually have no idea
I mean he did literally say "Anubis... Taking control of my systems... Something terrible is about to happen." And then he shot himself, so I think its safe to say that we do know, no?
The Anubis AI, which is the only AI as far as we've seen and the devs claiming God AI was just a colloquial term and not a lore thing with dozens of them, seemed to only possess omnics in the nearby vicinity and trying to get to the internet and then spread around the world and take over the AI and we get omnic crisis number 2 world wide instead of it just being locked in russia
So we don't know
I still don't know how canon zen floating actually is
cause if he does float
then he's literally the only omnic with legs we see do that
other omnics just don't have legs and float or have legs and walk
Whats a colloquial term?
So the fact that there are AI being able to control all other AI is not confirmed?
This is where things get real muddy real fast
So there's a couple ways to look at this
Omnics who have free will and are living beings
Omnics are just advanced AI
and AI who just performs it's function
If a computer can be hijacked then they aren't really living people and instead are just that first thing, a computer.
Chu has stated that omnics are supposed to represent marginalized populations as seen from the kings row and paris treatment of omnics, strongly resembling post civil war era treatment of African americans.
This becomes muddled because nothing in recorded human history has ever actually been someone being possessed by another person or entity. At least scientifically proven anyway. So this is why the water gets very muddled. Chu wants us to treat omnics as people who are living and have feelings and souls and whatever but on the off hand they created something that is very much not a human thing, possession, happening in a logical sense but also taking a bit from their "omnichood"/humanity or omnicnity
like we see sombra hack an omnic which makes sense but we've never really had a hacked human before and if sombra can hack omnics it's possible that omnics can hack other omnics conceivably which I guess would be the equivalent of possession or carrying around a needle with a virus and injecting them with it
it's a weird thing that I'd prefer not to think about but to answer your question
Yes there are other AI that can hack other AI if you choose to view omnics in that light which is perfectly fine since they are an "Artificial Intelligence"
Anubis is the only entity we know of that has the ability to control omnics
other "god programs" may be able to do that as well
but for hackers, it's definitely not as easy as just "reprogramming" omnics on the fly
Humans can be hacked tho
Would u argue that it’s control or would it be like putting bastion’s kill humans thing
How can humans be hacked?
It's called brainwashing
Xd
Look at Widow
She didnt kill her husband by choice
The brain is a super advanced organic supercomputer
Sombra has only demonstrated the ability to incapacitate omnics (Searching comic) and to dig into their memories (Orisa interaction)
Even Sombra has a computer attached to her brain IIRC
We actually don’t know what that is
Also brb
maybe, given enough time, Sombra could condition an omnic the same way Talon conditioned Widow
Omnics can be sentient even if they're AI initially if the OW canon decides it is because this is a fantasy world where a gorilla can talk
Not all our rules apply
Talking. Gorilla.
lore-wise, I believe "hacking" is more like the following: 1) having enough information to blackmail or restrict another person's movement or actions or 2) rendering any computer-based gadgets or equipment they have unusable
I think if something has independent thought and movement (can think and act for itself) then it should be considered "alive"
yeah, omnics definitely possess sapience
I think therefore I am
omnics have 1's and 0s, we have ATCGs. They need power to fuel their energies, we have food. they can think independently based on experience and learning
by technical definition, robots are artificial intelligences
I think it would be cool if we had more info on the genesis of omnic sapience, more info on the Omnic Crisis, more info on what happened with the omniums, and more info on what happened at the Overwatch HQ
but generally when someone calls something an AI, they mean just the program without a body
it's all way too vague, and takes far too long to resolve
it's been three years, and we barely even have any hints at the major lore questions
Iirc most omnics wont say why the crisis happened
Maybe the omniums are sentient and flipped their shit
maybe they don't know either
like asking a random citizen why their country went to war
Fair
some will know, some won't
if it's an unjust war, they might know a public reason but not the true reason (like fighting a war for "freedom" when it's really just about oil)
Would omnics not just learn faster than humans?
Like matrix where ppl download knowledge
I would also consider hacking alongside like going directly into a person's brain and extracting any information they wanted or like stopping/controlling another's person's movements and motions if we were to apply this to a human and not a computer'
Also, Lucio's Sonic Technology he stole from Vishkar was actually his father's invention. How did it get into the hands of Vishkar, did his father work for them?
Yes
Interesting
legally it belongs to Vishkar, due to patents and employee contracts
but morally i'd say it belongs to lucio's dad/lucio
Lucio would agree with you
personally I think it'd be interesting for us to see how the vishkar hierarchy would work
which is why he stole it
cause it seems San and Sym are treated pretty well
@full basin Lucio's dad worked for Vishkar
he developed the technology for them
then he clashed with Vishkar on something, most likely
we don't know the details
wonder how much of vishkar is actually bad
we don't even know Lucio's father's take on the whole thing
he could be fine with Vishkar owning the patent, but Lucio is the one upset about them taking advantage of his father or not paying him for his invention (whatever the case is)
well, the corporation as a whole is ethically dubious
obsessed with order, showing little regard for personal liberties
it's only Sanjay and possibly the higher leadership that is knowingly working with Talon though
maybe a couple of other Symmetra-like operatives are in on it, too
but rank-and-file architechs are probably clueless about both the Talon association and the covert operations
only hearing some rumors about the latter
Is there any page I can read about Lucio's father or is the fact that he invented Sonic tech and worked for Vishkar the only things we know?
And is his father deceased or still alive?
So the fact that D.va played Starcraft is not canon?
Or was the fact that she was a professional not canon? Is Starcraft still even in a thing in Overwatch since it's such an old game?
the fact that she was a professional StarCraft player is not canon
she's still a professional gamer, and she still plays StarCraft for fun
it was changed because they wanted her top game to be something that translated into controlling a mech
So trippy, because Starcraft is a video game made by Blizzard, so that means that in that same universe World of Warcraft and Hearthstone must exist, and then also Overwatch xD
StarCraft is more about micromanaging
Overwatch the game does not exist in the Overwatch universe
Of course, I was just saying that it should, but of course it doesn't
I mean, unless Starcraft being made by Blizzard isn't cannon
Oh is it!?
Omg that makes it so damn cool, so Blizzard is a very appraised gaming company in Overwatch 😮
Basically
they should have made it so that in the OWU Blizzard made Project Titan instead 😛
I mean they made an entire theme park out of it, but in the future they might as well have the advanced tech to make any franchise a theme park
Wow that's so cool
I didn't know it was canon
I thought it was Overwatch's first fun but like not canon map
I mean any map is fun but yall know what I mean xD
at the end of the map trailer, you can see Winston, Tracer, Bastion and Torbjorn watching the commercial together
So cool
(this is what makes us think Torbjorn and Bastion have joined up with Winston, but this is the only evidence for it so far so it's still up for debate)
Ah yes because Torbjorn was travelling with Bastion last we saw in the comics
also this is the first appearance of Bastion in its "classic" look
So basically, Bastion woke up in Germany and then went back into the forest and travelled all the way up to Sweden under the ocean and now travelling with Torb?
yep
Awesome ;p
Someone suggested that Blizzard should make that skin where that octopus is attached to Bastion, would be cool but challenging
that would make a good epic skin
Although that would nerf him as his model would become larger
Also, the fact that D.Va can just explode her Mech and then "respawn" it is just a plain gameplay thing right? Like in the cinematic she exploded her Mech to defeat that final Gwishin but lorewise she would have to rebuild one right?
Apparently
She couldn't just call one in
Lots of things are just for gameplay. Heck, lots of abilities don't even exactly exist outside of the game
yes
Im pretty sure roadhog isnt bullet proof
Yes, that I knew. Was just wondering if D.Va's ult was one of them, although that should be quite obvious, I tend to ask quite obvious questions just for the sake of confirmation xD
And im very sure dva’s nuke would easily destroy maps
She can make it explode yea but not without great personal risk to her person
reminder that there's a list of canon abilities in the pins
by someone very knowledgeable and trustworthy and etc etc
the two important points you can take from there is that 1. i'm in denial about the new hero classification system and 2. zenyatta has literally no lore
Zenyatta is a name and that's it
As of yet, right?
there are disembodied voices or names with more lore than zenyatta
we do know a couple of things about Zenyatta
mostly relating to genji
which is the sad bit
conceptually he's one of the coolest and most popular characters which just makes it confusing
he was a Shambali monk but left because he disagreed with the methods Mondatta was using to reach people - Mondatta believed in preaching, while Zenyatta wanted to get more hands-on
Off topic, but I believe Ashe would've been considered a Defense hero if it weren't for the community being confused about everything
oh look, a whole sentence about Zen that doesn't mention Genji
i'm impressed doc
He did say "mostly"
but that's literally all we know about him
he left the Shambali, found Genji, ???, present day
at this point i'm genuinely expecting him to show up in a main story overwatch plot point
kinda just shoehorned in there so he has something to do
I mean, I will take it as a good thing as that leaves a lot more room for story telling for Zen in the hopefully near future
people complain that everything we know about Mercy is connected to Genji, and that just isn't true
he's a footnote in her story
Do they really?
yes
That's egregious
mostly when complaining about Mercy being in a relationship with Genji
What to people mean with connected?
community: i love gency
also community: why is all the mercy lore about genji???
they complain that we won't learn anything else about her because she's just "Genji's gf" now
we know more about her past than we do about Genji's
we don't know much about Genji from before he got chopped up
but we know about Mercy from when she was a child and a teen
i dont really ship them. but I also think there should be no reason Genji would just be standing there waiting for Mercy to grab him before he got hit by one of the SUVs he disabled in Havana. He's a cyborg ninja, he could get out of the way if he wanted to.
I mean, I actually think his childhood would be really interesting to explore
it was for dramatic effect
Dramatic
Genji is very extra
Makes a nice shot
true
sometimes i feel like Mercy's staff, lore-wise, is more of a navigation and control tool for her Valkyrie Response Suit
Mercy's bio doesn't even mention Genji
Zenyatta's doesn't either
I'd say Genji is an accessory to Zenyatta and Mercy, rather than the other way around 😛
But people think that Mercy and Genji are connected in what way?
Like in a romantic relationship or?
Mercy saved his life after he was cut down by Hanzo
Love at first sight!
and it's implied that they have a close personal relationship
Makes only a little more sense than pharmercy.
Pharmercy makes no sense
at least Genji and Mercy interact and have spent time together and Blizzard is giving plenty of evidence for them being close friends and/or in a relationship
as far as we know, Mercy and Pharah met once when they were kids
Genji and Mercy are in more like platonic love I guess
Genji and Mercy are friends
Friends for sure, but their lines do hint at flirting, but we don't know if they were in an established relationship or not yet
they may also be more than friends, but that has yet to be confirmed or denied
mercy just wants someone to talk to ;-;
she must not have many friends on the base
since she stays up late and mostly just talks about technical stuff
I wonder what specifically the late night thing refers to
(not in that sense)
i mean whether she's just a big night owl or the "sleep 4 hours a day and work the rest" kind of deal
I think chu said she was a workaholic, not sure if I just made that up tho
the more I think about it, the more I realize that Genji's lore just revolves around other heroes
he doesn't have much for himself
Indeed, Shimada Clan, Hanzo, Overwatch and Blackwatch and then Zen.
Well I might be stretching a bit but still
even Zenyatta, who has the barest of lore to begin with, has lore outside his time with Genji
Well, he's a lot more interesting during the retribution event since there's personal turmoil there and he still actively hates Hanzo and his new cyborg body. After he meets with Zenyatta and comes to terms with what happened and forgives Hanzo his story arc is already finished. The only Shimada with a character arc still to finish is Hanzo. Genji just needs to offer it to him and be there for him when he finally is ready to forgive himself.
we should get something about Genji's youth, what led up to him being sashimi'd by Hanzo
I too would love to see genji being the fuckboy that he was
and contrast that with how he is now
yeah, that too
Yeah, there are some hints that Sombra knows something we don't that Genji has come to terms with as well. Or maybe that's just referencing his old Playboy lifestyle.
She calls him Sparrow, not sure if that's just something his father called him or if there's greater meaning behind that name we don't know about
Genji is just Hanzo's brother/Mercy's bf patient/Zenyatta's student
Sparrow was his father's nickname for him
Yeah I wasn't sure about that. I think a look at his past is the only way to have any interesting story about him. The tale of a ninja at peace who takes everything in his stride and doesn't stress about the small stuff wouldn't make for a very interesting story as most of it would just be him meditating
being at peace doesn't mean it's unchallenged though
You got a former member of a high tier criminal organization that moved over to a supposedly unethical organization that was accused of torture, assassination, and kidnapping of foreign powers
What’s the deal with storm rising, what’s it add to the lore? (I live under a rock btw)
the backstory of doomfist capture
further evidence of the divide growing in Overwatch
scary big robot guy
gency bait
^
On the surface not much; storm rising’s lore is more hidden in the special dialogue like how sojorn is very much like genji physically
But really not much
We get a bit more insight to the characters
But nothing substantial lore wise
lots of little stuff, and an answer to a background mystery that people have been speculating about for a year or so
What background mystery?
ok so i dont know if im being crazy, but there were several doomfists according to lore right?
The black woman in the Ana Origins photo
and the one in the game is just one of them
@worthy rose 3
The Saviour, The Scourge, and the Successor
Akande is the third
The first two are dead
Were there three in total or is the doomfist a thing that gets passed on to the next person?
and in terms of continuity, the doomfist gauntlet that was in the museum in the original trailer (not entirely sure if that lines up with canon), would that gauntlet be between the second and third?
that gauntlet meaning like at that point in time
the one in museum is the third, but only part of it
ah ok so the one in the museum w-yeah lol, cheers
Its a generational name. The gauntlet is also either entirely new or improved upon with each generation. The Saviour only had knuckle dusters. The Scourge just had the gauntlet. Akande has his whole arm as the gauntlet.
also this is probably really old, but i remember in some comic some time ago (i wanna say a year ago) there was a girl that planted some bomb at ow hq
a blonde girl with a baseball cap i think
oh hey nice trusted puff
we don't really know much about it prior to the bombing itself
the comic is Retribution if you want a refresher
