#RPG modes: a gameplay loop

Several people have suggested RPG modes and map mutators

This is supposed to be a very short expansion on that focused not on the details but on the main gameplay loop.

The RPG mode should ultimately reflect the fantasy’s RPG expirience but with a strategy game level of urgency and victory.
An entire RPG on skirmish mode.

Let’s summarize the typical fantasy RPG:

a fantasy world is in danger from a big threat (Sauron, a dragon, a Lich, the hordes of chaos, the demon lord)
the world features vying factions or desperate kingdoms that fall to the threat
a hero must rise from humble beginnings to defeat the evil

As such, the map should look much like a regular game of age of wonders with vying Godir.

In addition there should be one or more threats trying to wipe out civilization.
This could be a super powered Godir like we already have in challenge realms or something more scripted.

This is the Victory and loss condition.

As such the game is a. race
The player must gain expirience, units and equipment fast enaugh to defeat the threat while the threat attempts to either accomplish a scripted goal or to conquer the world

The regular Godir meanwhile also war amongst themselves.
They are however also how players gain quests using the bounty systems

Getting the player to clear infestations but also help in the war against rival Godir (you don’t always want to play LOTR, you sometimes wanna play Berserk)

So here my basic breakdown.

a game of AoW 4 between AI goes on in the background
there is an endgame threat which the player needs to deal with using his own strategy
AI Godir are the players source of quests, units and heroes
the victory condition is directly tied to the larger conflict
as the threat destroys neutral Godir and free cities, it depletes the players of options of income and recruitment -> indirect skirmish

As was pointed out below: kind of like Drox Operative or Star sector but fantasy
Or Five leagues from the borderlands

would also be fun in multiplayer, to be honest, having questing guys going around doing stuff seems like a cool thing

I vote yes, but I'd love to see a Dwarf Fortress-style adventure mode. I'm looking for a roguelike, free-exploration experience with one main character and a small party.

The key is a living world where villains and heroes evolve independently. Permadeath is a must, with victory achieved by defeating or allying with all rival characters.

There is a game called "Drox Operative (2)" which has some of the elements similar to what is proposed here.

The concept is the following. Every AI is an empire playing real-time 4x strategy, while you are playing RPG as a mercenary, getting quests from the empires, having ability to help them with wars, colonizing and overall affecting their 4x game.

It would be awesome to have something like this for AoW4, but I don't believe the engine is truly ready for such a game mode. It might look better as a separate game.

However, it's not forbidden to dream 🙂

That was basically the idea, starsector is not too dissimilar

There’s no real suck game in a fantasy setting

The closest beeing heavily modded Kenshi or Soulash 2,

As for wether or not the engine supports it.

I mean not if you want an action RPG, but other than that:

there already are warring AI factions and they can already give you dynamic quests (bounties)
You already can purchase items and units from factions (dwellings) , the RPG elements are there you a full leveling system and classes

Also an in-game scenario creator would be great, even if it would be hard to implement.

Setting scenario bosses would be really, really cool.

I can imagine conditions like "prevent enemy from taking X" or "destroy level 20 wizard king turtling at his tower before X turns."

As such the idea could either be a Freeform mode or one where there’s a presence trait you need to defeat to win

Naturally here it would become a race to become powerful enaugh to take on a 4x empire as an adventuring party

However more likely you’d do missions for other Godir to get them to all unite against the big threat with you delivering the killing blow

You could also have an ascended one trait.

This would disable the effects on every single transformation except on a single leader of your choosing. So it would feel a lot stronger than the others if it has a lot of transformation buffs.
