Several people have suggested RPG modes and map mutators
This is supposed to be a very short expansion on that focused not on the details but on the main gameplay loop.
The RPG mode should ultimately reflect the fantasy’s RPG expirience but with a strategy game level of urgency and victory.
An entire RPG on skirmish mode.
Let’s summarize the typical fantasy RPG:
a fantasy world is in danger from a big threat (Sauron, a dragon, a Lich, the hordes of chaos, the demon lord)
the world features vying factions or desperate kingdoms that fall to the threat
a hero must rise from humble beginnings to defeat the evil
As such, the map should look much like a regular game of age of wonders with vying Godir.
In addition there should be one or more threats trying to wipe out civilization.
This could be a super powered Godir like we already have in challenge realms or something more scripted.
This is the Victory and loss condition.
As such the game is a. race
The player must gain expirience, units and equipment fast enaugh to defeat the threat while the threat attempts to either accomplish a scripted goal or to conquer the world
The regular Godir meanwhile also war amongst themselves.
They are however also how players gain quests using the bounty systems
Getting the player to clear infestations but also help in the war against rival Godir (you don’t always want to play LOTR, you sometimes wanna play Berserk)
So here my basic breakdown.
a game of AoW 4 between AI goes on in the background
there is an endgame threat which the player needs to deal with using his own strategy
AI Godir are the players source of quests, units and heroes
the victory condition is directly tied to the larger conflict
as the threat destroys neutral Godir and free cities, it depletes the players of options of income and recruitment -> indirect skirmish
As was pointed out below: kind of like Drox Operative or Star sector but fantasy
