#Improve clarity of the City Building UI

The current city building does not convey information in a quick or clear way:

  • There are 2 different screens to build and show already built structures
  • First screen is sorted alphabetically, second screen is sorted by acquisition time, and neither is helpful to search
  • There is no information regarding structure hierarchy / which building unlocks which
  • Some structures might be forgotteng because they do not show as available unless you already fulfilled the requirements (e.g. Shipyard)
  • When absorbing a free city, it's hard to check at first sight the kind and level of development the city already has for each resource line

I think something like the HoMM5 City Building screen is better, but it should be adapted because AoW city screens are smaller. So here's a couple of sketches I did using Paint and my abyssal editing skills (sorry about that) about a design that has been on my mind for a while:

  • Just one screen both to display and build new structures
  • No need to show the names of the structures, the icon is enough (full information is shown when hovering over)
  • Already built structures are displayed normally, available / unavailable structures have a shade of green / red
  • The first rows show always these 12 building lines in the same order: City TierResource_TML_FoodResource_TML_StructureProductionResource_TML_UnitProductionResource_TML_GoldResource_TML_ManaResource_TML_KnowledgeWater, LavaMorale_HighResource_TML_Influence & Fortifications
  • When a building line unlocks other structures (e.g. Walls), those will be nested below
  • After this main section, there are other sections for Culture & Tome Structures, and for SPIs.

Would you like this kind of QoL improvements for the city screen?

I would love this but I think the reason why it isn’t is for consoles.

I mean, when you open the city building screen, there would be a cursor pointing to the first structure icon, and from there you could hover and move to other buildings. It's not that different from the current design, it is simply more fixed and organized.

It might be a bit hectic with a joystick to navigate

Only issue that may arise

I agree wholly with this post. I was abundantly happy with the hero skill overhaul, and I hope they do the same thing with cities. It's ugly and inefficient when it's presented as a list, as it has been since 1999.
