Without repeatable resource-sinks, players will be forced to invest in options irrelevant to their build, once they exhaust all relevant options. This might either lead to all players having the same build in the late-game or/and these resources becoming useless past a certain point in the game.

I'm not opposed to spend research or imperium for bennies but repeatables interact really poorly with campaign modes that aow has done in the past

Having a switch that converts research to mana or gold income would be sufficient I think

Like cities usually have a switch production to gold/mana

That seems like a decent option, though I myself prefer the way PF handles it.
