Black and white, on a board oak and sepia
A battle of insight, eyes peer to likely future
An hourglass runs its sand down a narrow opening
As quick as you make your move, your opponent makes it sooner

A pawn to the game, a lost visage in wooden war
No blood shed but lives lost and taken
They go once, then wait for your move
Risks lie in desperation as wood shatters and rots

A knight, both valiant and strong
Jumps up to the task, with a steed and blade
Rampages across in ways take left
And right to the side, till bring death that doesn't bleed

A bishop not sees what perils lies ahead
A hand moves it left at angle, in red
A play black and white but not to be seen
Moves across corners to protect crowns of trees

A bastion, a tower, a rook that stands tall
With brick made with bark and shield made with fear
Plows straight and to the right, then left to crush more
No eternity, it stands ruined forever ancient

A battle of minds, of wits, of steadfast confidence
Tacticians oppose the mirror made in combat
Lives are lost, but no lives are taken
A game made for gods, of wood, shades of grey, no life, just like pieces on a board

Their carved selves in my bloody hands
Shatter borders, capitals, kingdoms, their promised lands
They wish to crack our crowns, we wish to steal their throne
Black and white, on a board oak and sepia
16 alone on each side, fighting for lost and futile empires

spare dawn
