The oscillating wail
of a passing siren.
The cigarette smell
burrows through your nostrils.
The small splatter with every step
atop the wet gray asphalt,
painted black by midnight.
The distant drips
from the leftover rain.
And the speckled streetlights that
formed a path like skipping stones.
A narrow
endless
road
to the
city
ahead,
far, far
away.
Towering figures laid in the distance, hugging the sky and clouds, molding the horizon.
A cacophony of yellow and neon emanating from that looming backdrop.
The sounds blended together to a constant hum, a grinding of gears and a distant shout. The moon squeezed itself in a nook between buildings.
The giant structures cast a shadow, engulfing the miles of homes that coiled up my hill. The break in their shadows let a rectangle of moonlight bleed to illuminate me and the street ahead, beckoning me.
But when I turned around,
another
endless
winding
path
stretched
far, far
away.
This time,
to a green plateau of
quiet and crickets and
wind-loving leaves,
and in place of neon were
an orchestra of stars
weaving pictures in the sky.
Mountains peppered the horizon, forming a
rocky cradle.
The air felt cool in my lungs,
and each breath came
without hesitation.
I let my cheeks fall
and shoulders slouch
in a contrasting expanse of endless beauty.
And the beckoning came again, this time
from someplace else.
Like estranged kin
lulling me back home.
My shedding skin
sailing the whistling wind
back to where man couldn’t reach.
I sat at that crossroads
between two worlds
until only one
remained.
