#Hunting update needs balancing

The hunting update makes the game WAY, WAY too easy. Even on Insanity.

If you kill a deer, you have somewhere around 10~12 chances PER DEER to find food.
One "heart", "instestine" etc, when seared, feeds you by 75%! That's like, 2 days worth of scavenging. Not to mention the classic "Deer Meat", worth 45% when cooked.

I have 5 Survivalism on my current character. Less than a week in. And I have enough stored food to last over a month already. All it took me was running a couple deer+boar with my truck at random, while looking for tools...

Aplogies if I sound elitist, the language barrier betrays me. I don't know how to sugarcoat it ๐Ÿ™

I agree - but please recall it is still very much a WIP - the devs have even stated this.
Right now, for example, I can only use an Axe or a tomahawk for any operation even though I have Combat Knives & Cleavers in my inventory>
It's also not released yet, and is still only in experimental branch - give the guys a break!!

You're not supposed to eat the icky parts ๐Ÿ˜„

Do we have a slider for animal spawns yet? That would balance it quite a bit

Not thought of looking in the tools tab for something to use - tip appreciated, but since I found a Hydraulic Cutter I simplty don't carry hacksaws or crosssaws any more either.
I do, however, have my Trusted Tomahawk and Combat Knives - both of which should be usable, but especially for skinning the Knife should be far superior to a tomahawk (or any sort of saw) but it's not even an option!
I honestly agree that satiation balancing needs looking at (there are so many issues across the board with this including - but not limited to - the ridiculously overpowered pumpkin & the way fish seem to go from 105% when raw down to 8% when fried or baked), but first the tools you can use must be fixed IMO.

I mean, it is realistic. I am so tired of games where I kill a deer and I get enough meat for 1 decent meal and that is it.

I think a lot of it comes more from food decay being very generous. Can leave meat in my pack a week and be fine. By speeding up decay to more real timetables fridges would have much better reasons to exist, and it lets players decide if they want to handle it or not with a simple setting.

Adjusting via food decay would be a good balance indeed, but would probably break in winter starts. Temperature outside goes way below freezing and stays for days on end.
One could just toss the meat on the ground, let it freeze and cook it when in need of food, bypassing the decay entirely.

Maybe the easiest path turns out to be the best:

  • lower chances of finding stuff simply because Insanity
  • make "survivalism" give exponential returns on loot (low surv = you get nearly nothing; high surv = you make use of the deer entirely)
Maybe both at once. idk... I really don't.

What i do know is: Insanity+Winter start should NOT have food "solved" by day 1 just running over 2 deer and 1 boar. Takes a lot of the challenge away.

Then it comes to the question of finding weapons

Maybe there could be a craftable rabbit trap too

Also sure you can just toss food out in the ground and let it freeze. But, you're ignoring the animals are going to be improved over time and not just be food sources that you can just easily grab every time. Right now they don't even move out of the way of my path of walking

I mean right now literally every time animals spawn in I know a boar, a wolf, and one or two deer just spawned in. It's very simplistic. Deer aren't that fast, bores and wolves are Solo and suicidal. The fact is you shouldn't be kidding two to three deer each day just by driving your car around occasionally. Hunting should be something to work for with a large bonus in it.
