Loving the game too.

I agree with upkeep being rough. I have it set to not consume resources because I want to spend my time having fun and upkeep isn't fun 'for me'.

I appreciate the fact that they allow this to be turned off partially, however it would be nice to be able to disable the feature of upkeep entirely for those that don't want to interact with it. It currently stops you placing things within the UC range, even when upkeep is reduced to 0/hr. It would be good to get a prompt why it cant be placed inside.

To chime in on my view. I would like options for the UC to give a build radius for auto repair and stopping Zombie respawns, but to turn the material consumption off for a more relaxed playstyle. And potentially the option to upgrade the radius so only 1 UC is needed as the base gets more stations and grows.

Currently It will be even worse for a nomad player that is in the wilderness and all the walls/roof is constructed by the player so they have even more upkeep than people commandeering an existing dwelling.

It doesn't stop you building, it stops the material use in your UC (upkeep).

However I had issues when I didn't have enough materials in the UC (wooden scrap text was red) even with the upkeep time to 0 = disabled.
I couldn't place a planter box inside until I added enough wooden scrap to change the number to white and then it could be moved inside the UC radius.
I.e. even if a generator isn't hooked up, if you place it within a UC, there is an upkeep requirement.

I think if the intent is to be able to disable the need for upkeep, this restriction could be removed too?

There may be reasons why they need to still cap it for performance or something, or it might just be an unforeseen/unintended outcome.

As you mention there is a limit to what can be built within a UC by the maximum capacity of the storage of the UC. as when all the space is used, it will restrict you building within the UC range.

In my case the upkeep was set to 0.0 at the launch of the server (as I had no interest with that mechanic) so I'm a little confused with what you are saying

I think it may be related to when I bring something back rather than building.
As the health may not be perfect (jostled in back of truck), it imposes upkeep costs (or UC debt as you mentioned) when placed inside the primary UC range.

Therefore as I see it you should have a repair area with a UC filled of materials simply to repair anything that you bring back, and then when repaired you can move into your main UC radius with no issues.
Is that what you are eluding to?
