Add an option for all Vehicles to be damaged. You'll start on foot and work your way up to repairing a vehicle eventually.
To repair some key parts you'll need a "car repair kit", which you can only make in "Advanced workbench table" - that is you need to progress in the game in order to finally get a car.
May be rarely (extremely rarely) you can find a car in Good condition, and a key is hidden in the house, or you can use a "hotwire kit" (which is craftable only in Advanced workbench - made of pliers, screwdriver, etc).

As it stands now, it's toooo easy to hotwire any car, and then kill all the zobmies around.

What about tying the removal or installation of parts to the corresponding skills or you risk damaging them or even destroying them. For instance trying to install the battery with low mechanical/electrical causes you to hook it up improperly and you do damage to the electrical system.
Incorrectly hotwiring a car should fry everything electrical in the car or at the very least heavily damage it. Yeah you might be able to succeed eventually but it'll take you destroying quite a few cars until your electrical skill gets high enough.

That’s a good option too ) another one could be all car batteries are dead, and you need to charge it , and for that to build a charging station (so you can’t immediately start driving).

a lot of vehicles do start with missing parts, which in my mind equates to damaged to the point where you can't fix. definitely feel like it would be a somewhat easy programming job to make a toggle that ensures every car has at least one part missing.

For now, I'm "roleplaying" my own "No car challenge"

Rules:

  • Very hard difficulty, less loot, no respawn , 2x zombies, water/electricity immediate shutoff, start "unprepared" no clothes, no tools
  • Can't use any car until build the last Advanced bench
  • You Can hotwire motorcycle / quadrocycle but only if charged the battery yourself (in battery bank you need to build)

It so fun, finally feels dangerous. starting without clothes (almost frozen), got lucky finding a weapon "cleaver" in the starter kitchen, killed first zombie, got his clothes not to freeze.
Outside a horde even started right away, near Saranac cemetery, I though I'm dead, but .. I can't believe it but survived , cornered myself in the "Shed with tools", and started swinging my "cleaver" frantically until it broke, then a kitchen knife. Somehow zombies got confused in the Shed, they surrounded it, but came one at a time, the first one was a firefighter got his clothes on while next zombie was hitting me, firefighters have good protection. Got deep wounds but killed the whole hoard, my heart rate was so high.
Then spend first few days scavenging only the local neighborhood, sneaking a lot now, it's totally different experience without vehicle safety. Settled in Saranac park (the one with solar panels and a pool for water). Most building a locked here, so I'm in the kitchen. But now, there is no food, not easy to kill a deer without car,. It a challenge on foot.
Currently hoping to make my way to a motor/quadrocycle if I find one nearby.

Perhaps someone will like my "no car challenge", cheers!

why freezing, did you also start in winter?
