Better combat with features like "directional aiming for melee", weapons collision for PvP (and future bandits NPCs) and others similar features have been probably already suggested.
What I would suggest instead, that in my opinion would make a lot the difference (cause melee combat is important on a zombie game) is grappling mechanics and knockdown, both are priority in my opinion over other combat mehcanics:
- Grappling for slower zombies
- there should be a chance that instead that hit you, slower zombie grab you
- when this happen you cant move until you free your self
- free your self could be random with higher and faster chance if character is strong
- it could take in to account push a key like E
- Free from a zombie should be very easy, free form 2-3 zombies that grab you togheter should be very difficult instead
- after some times you are grappled and immobilized zombies could active another animation directly biting you
Why?
- This would make game much horror making so that slower zombies would become extreme dangerous
- one slower zombie wouldn't be a great treat, 2-3 instead could be mortal
- Knockdown for faster zombies
- If they run fast they should be able to knockdown you and they can fall too
- This need an animation to stay up
- stronger or fat character could resist better
- This could apply to your character too, charging could knockdown zombies.
Why?
- Make so different zombies have different mehcanics
- Dodge move
- Nothing to complex, simply a back dodge to avoid a grab (dodge key + back) or to avoid a runner (dodge key and lateral movement)
