My advice is to use regular large storage. Holds 300 and you can stack them. They're smaller so you can actually hold more in less space the scrap storage takes up. You can also label them.

While I agree about the weight differences I feel like using the exact same storage units does look a little boring so it would be nice to some for the looks of things to have multiple storage styles

It gets insanely expensive to build without limits like that. My loot doesn't respawn and my utility cabinet is more expensive and triggers more often that usual. At the moment I am paying 97 iron scrap and 129 wood scrap per hour. While the cost is the same for scrap containers versus large crate, the scrap containers hold 500 instead of 300.
I literally have a room in my house with 7 scrap containers, none of which are named so I either need to remember or guess.
