The well doesn't seem to be able to fill items. Tried the plastic bucket, muck tub and a plastic tub.

Did you try hovering the camera over the well and then pressing TAB?
After that, right-click on your bucket (or other container) to refill it from the well.

ok so that way does work! it seems that just the well menu "extract into item" doesn't

yeah, i realized the same issue with fluid barrels (not the ones you can build)
