When you drag say a stack of 18 steel scrap in there, it splits up in two stacks of 18 in the top, next the forge won't start smelting it into ingots, unless it is actually ignited, even if the temperature is well over the requirement. (Like with the simpler forge), if the temp hits it's max at 3950C and hit the Extinguish button, the countdown timer finishes, but doesn't poop anything out and then stops, it doesn't restart for the next round.
