Hmmmm, if it were me I'd probably go Nomad. There are some pretty bad slices, but enough left where picking after the turnaround point in the snake means only one is gone and there's something decent left. Speaker here probably means you're getting stuck with a bad slice or bad faction most likely

In that position, my thinking would be guided with how happy would I be to play Cabal. If I'm happy with Cabal, I pick slice 4 here and cross fingers that makes Cabal a less appealing pick for @gritty escarp. If I'm not happy to play Cabal, then yeah, I guess Nomad is not terrible here.

The equidistants are the hexes in the top left of each slice. They are two spaces away from 2 home systems. That means they are kind of up for grabs. Some players get testy about "their slice" but it's really shared.

The map we're buillding has (as of this count) 4 hazardous planets (considerd optimal for exploration), a blue tech skip, and a red tech skip in those equidistant hexes. The 4 slices that could be picked add another 2 hazardous planets, and Hope's End. That's a lot to fight over.

In general as a rule of thumb when I'm looking at slices are slices with good planets not in the top left better than slices with good planets in the top left?

Personal preference. If you have a fight-y faction or aren't afraid of sharp play, you can base your strategy on the equidistant. If you have fight-y factions lined up against you, maybe not.

Oh, the equidistant. Yeah. even without a fighty faction it’s okay, but I’d prefer to at least be a faction with movement.

I personally do more wheeling/dealing than punching 😇 but I don't yuck anyone's yum.

I will do more dealing in this game because there’s no reason for me to punch new players, but that’s not my normal play style.

One of the only things I feel is to maybe go out of my way not to hinder anyone in very bad points or resource position, unless they're doing great at the other. I've done so many death spirals over a physical table

Kind of depends who you are. Argent/cabal being 6th first round doesn’t make a big difference for them because of enjoying construction. The bigger issue in being so far down in an 8 player game is the speaker token getting all the way to you. Especially with it being a 10 point game

Doesn't it move kind of randomly? Whoever takes politics takes speaker? Why will speaker take much longer to get to 8th choice turn 1 instead of 5th choice turn 1?

Depends on the table. But politics is often taken early to control speaker positioning. It’s commonly sold backwards because of how strategy cards are picked. Politic holder sells it to the player right of them, usually with a non-binding agreement to retain first choice of cards the next round. Imperial/leadership strat card timing is often the most important thing near the end of the game to determine who scores first. Essentially, many tables politics never actually makes it all the way around the table throughout the game
