My players have asked if the Shard of Creation can recreate magic items. My reading of the rule is that they can't. They're arguing that since it says "you can use an action to transform it into any type of nonmagical weapon or shield or into any object of Medium size or smaller", that it can become a magic item, as long as it meets the total cost and size rules. Your thoughts?
#Shard of Creation Magic Items

Pretty sure you're reading it right, though I can't blame them for trying 😛
Gotta respect the hustle
Oh, I do. The mechanist in question brought in one of our most "lawyer-esque" players to try and argue his point. All I can do at this point is laugh
I....may have a lawyering argument for you. I just need to double check something to make sure it's technically correct (the best kind of correct)
Bah. Nope.
Well, it was worth a shot. 🤣
I was going to make a "magic items aren't objects" argument in a similar vein to the "creatures are not objects and therefore cannot be containers" reasoning for why you can't cast Create Water in someone's mouth to choke them
I mean, I was leaning toward that argument myself at one point
Basing it on the fact that equipment and objects are separate bullets on the sidebar on page 57, and that activating a magic item is explicitly stated as NOT being the "Use An Object" action, which is also true of most actions for Equipment like weapons and armor
but then you get into the actual list of magic item descriptions and tons of them refer to the magic item as an object
the nonmagic is for all 3, weapons, shields and objects. so,
My sentiments exactly.
any type of nonmagical weapon or shield or into any object of Medium size or smaller
should be
any type of nonmagical weapon or shield or object that is Medium size or smaller.
its just worded differently, the RAI is the same
That's how I explained it, too. Good to know I'm not too much of a jerk with the ruling 🤣
nah nah, respect the hustle but rules are rules for a reason
Sounds like this has been resolved, but just as extra confirmation: no, they can't use the Transform function of the Shard of Creation to turn it into a magic item. I agree with No One that removing the second "into" in that sentence would likely help clear up that confusion as the term "nonmagical" is intended to apply to weapon, shield, and object.
It's a subtle difference, but likely worth an errata note to help ensure clarity.
If you'll allow it, this editor sends a hat tip and a point of Luck to your clever and creative players 🙂
Just double confirming that yall are right---
And piling on to say "magic items" are technically not "objects"
Those are distinct mechanical key words 👍
does a happy little dance
