Book: Deep Magic: Volume 1
Page #: Roll20 VTT, I am not sure of the page number.

4th-Level Illusion

Casting Time: 1 action

Range: 120 feet

Components: V, S, M (a crow’s eye)

Duration: Concentration, up to 1 minute

You amplify the fear that lurks in the heart of all creatures. Select a target point you can see within the spell’s range. Every creature within 20 feet of that point becomes frightened until the start of your next turn and must make a successful Wisdom saving throw or become paralyzed. A paralyzed creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. Creatures immune to being frightened are not affected by night terrors.

The Question: In comparison to Hold Monster a 5th level spell and Power Word Stun an 8th level spell, Night Terrors seems quite powerful. It is a 4th level spell that is an area of effect with a 20ft radius that automatically frightens a creature and is capable of paralyzing multiple creatures in that radius if they are frightened. It works on any monster or humanoid that can be frightened including undead creatures. Was this spell really supposed to be a 4th level spell? To me Night Terrors seems like a pretty solid 9th level spell.

Hi @pulsar whale !
It IS a powerful spell, but Deep Magic has a lot of powerful spells. Arguably, you could either increase the spell level to 5 or limit it to humanoids, but the spell fits the power level we were aiming for with Deep Magic. I wouldn’t say it packs the same punch as a 9th level spell, but we definitely design our spells and player options on a slightly elevated power level than the Player’s Handbook.
