Started working on KoTZ again, gonna port the Spectator mod to it, with improvement to the map ( Same squad green icon, Floating map), Show/hide UI,Zoom, MoveUp/down

Ayyyy Working In game, On a server !

I'm surprised it works without too much problem on first try,
i didnt work on KoTZ for a while, especially since the SDK update.
A few bug to fix ofc, but the core functionality works

No video lately, so here is maybe a screenshot, here's one and the last patchnotes.
Will prob create a video overview of all the interaction with the kit customization soon. It almost is fully functional for the PT

-Add weapon name at the top

-Arange the weapons in a way that looks more like an inventory

-Added 21 vanilla weapon (of a total of around 50 )
-Setup the XP unlock for all the guns
(So that's 91 min for the last gun unlock, Only with capture XP, prob around an hour with kills.

-Semi fix the WeaponList scrollbar (isn't showing, but mousewhell works)
-Temp fix: Disable map zooming, because widget doesnt resize when zoomed.

From mini-playtest (Version 0.11.4) Saturday:

1- Game Mode: I would certainly play on servers with this game, I think it would work especially well on smaller maps/lower player count servers
2- Game Mode: Needs some easy to interpret custom HUD elements to show state of game from player's perspective
3- Game Mode: Without friendly squad HUD indicators, need to make sure factions are easily identifiable (however, this goes for vanilla OHD too to be honest)
4- Kit Unlocking via XP: Seemed to work fine for me
5- Inventory Management: Some small bugs (may not be specifically MOD related), but generally worked as I would expect

I think the game mode itself would be fun enough to be split off and run with standard kits (maybe reduced selection depending on map used).

Very promising! Hopefully you can get a larger scale test with the OHD dev team at some point. πŸ™‚

here is the original, I plan on trying something different : the most important to me is (ofc the score) but at a glance , you should know who has more players in the zone, and is actually capturing, here it's signified by the squares and the highlight (here red has way more people)

I think i'm gonna display the player advantage (for example if there is 3 blue and 10 red in the zone, it'll show 7 red little icon representing a dude.)
Also highlighting the score to show who controls the zone

And ofc move it from the top because it hides the compass , and put it near the weapon status bottom right

  1. the situation was way worse because everyone had the same skin no matter the team they were in. Indeed it's a vanilla prob, Player name(name tag) is in the SDK i've seen it , was disabled because looking bad iirc and no other reason, so could be enabled ez if it doesnt take too much work.

  2. the goal is for the mod to be enjoyable on full servers 80-100 players.
    Ofc as it is the Capture zone size is designed on purpose to be very small, as well as spawn distance, as well as unlock xp value (and so the time it takes) to be very short for a small playtest.
    I have another layer of the same map on the Refinery area that is suited for 20 players i think (havent tested it yet, trying to organize a bigger playtest)
    Embassy is fun for 10-20 i think.

And indeed, for now with the fast unlock time it feels like a slightly slower than GunGame
Ultimately when i figure out how to resize the zone widget on the map when zooming. i could use the whole map, and have a seeding mode: it starts small, and increase the zone size / spawn distances based on player population

The features are :
Custom spawn points (and map widgets)
Control zone (and map widgets) that gives xp
XP on kills, saved even when you disconnect, that unlocks guns in increasing intervals (takes longer for the better guns)
3 teams (was harder than you think to make it work smoothly ^^)

Customize your kit before spawning. Using unlocked guns (20 out of the ~45ish guns that are in the game)
Add guns / remove / switch them.
Pick up kit of dead players
Make the InventorySelect ( slider on the right when changing weapons) work with it (also took some time)

What's planned for now :
Show the best gun on the kit left by dead players on the ground (so you know what's in there)
More layers and different POI (for around 20 players, maybe risala)

Seeding mode (increasing zone, if i fix the zoom)

Implementing the Floating map i made for the SpectatorCam mod

If there is a mapper interested (and actually committed, a few asked, but when provided with a complete tutorial, didnt actually do it or provided feedback)
A way to play KoTZ on any modded map, they would have to just add 4 actors (3 spawn points , and the central point of the capture zone) that i can find and replace with the necessary kotz actors
i can ofc mac gyver it, load into the map find a good spot, register the X Y Z location and detect myself when the mod is loaded onto a modded map and do it all myself, but thats a lot of finicky work, compared to what the mapper has to do to make it compatible

Ok i finally figured out the pretty bad crash i had been having, for now i seem to have fixed it, no i need to go in and go through a lot of the code to make sure it wont happen elsewhere / clean up

I think if there were matches of some kind, it would be great to switch up the map, locations and/or spawns, to switch things up every 20 minutes or so.

Weapon unlock order seemed a little odd, with glock, kar98 and smoke being so far down the list. Definitely some balance needed in the unlock list.

Really liked the kill feedback, a battle log in chat and hit markers would be even better (like in vehlaw's casual mod)

  • The current (small) KOTZ map would be a nice kinda "capture the flag" gmaemode in it self. Small map and lots of action.
    idk if thats in the scope of KoTZ /KotH. And could be a gamemode of its own i think BD mentionned CTF
  • The spawnpoints should also have the Team Flags on the map, like in the original game

And also it was only the sks ive unlocked right and cant use or didnt spawn in my loadout ..but if you log back in all the xp and unlocks accounted still after entering the server...meaning the unlocked and xp works if you play the game even when u only can spawn back with a pistol u still gain xp and unlock stuff you just cant see it but when enter back to server it accounts back to all you've unlock and now u can see and use the guns u have unlocked.

Change Bots Routes At Runtime
For King of the Zone (A3 king of the hill inspired)

Will be used when transitioning from seeding layer(<20 people) to intermediate(<40) to full

It'll allow the bots to attack the Capture Zone Properly since it's moved / was made bigger in the intermediate layer

Will also help me reduce the mod file size , only copying the map layer one time, so 50Mb per map variant (risala argone etc),
and then managing all the different seeding locations (warehouse / suburbs / etc) with BP code

Pretty proud of this one, took me quite a while and a lot of trial and error to figure out

And I think having just played the original, that a sound for XP gained would be nice to give a sense of accomplishment. Hi Kaiz, gutted couldn't stay on much longer with the playtest yesterday. Generally tho looks like it's coming on! I didn't notice anything buggy, although it did reinforce that discussion the other day about how to make the bottom-right "status" UI easy to understand/quick to understand. Tricky one that I'll admit!

Just one other thing, I kept bringing up the map to check if I was in the zone or not. Perhaps just something additional in the HUD to indicate this to the player .. as this is the main "play point" for the game-mode.

Hopefully get on the next test for longer! πŸ™‚

I don't want to suggest to add to an already large pile of work, but even a basic practice mode that resembles the progression of CTZ could help new players quite a bit.

I say this because even when playing a pretty obscure mod for Doom 2 (as in 1990's Doom) called Doom Infinite, even that has people playing it as their like first FPS, which good lord is that a hell of a choice, but it was probably just a matter of circumstance.

The point is, all games used to have at least some basic prep to them, and while a mod in development shouldn't be expected to have a full on tutorial, being able to play it whenever independent of other players, location, internet etc is kind of huge, I think at least.

What I'm saying is a way to potentially solve that chicken and egg scenario is to allow it to be as almost as playable as the core game is, even if every feature isn't there.

Also if there was, the two mods could not technically work at the same time.
It's a restriction from how plugins(mods) are implemented in UE4 right now.
Latter on with Mutators there will be more possibilities with mixing and matching mods

But i have a feeling it wont allow two big mods (as in that change a lot of thing in base blueprints like Gamemode / PlayerController or PlayerChar )
since you'll still be limited to have one Main gamemode BP from one mod, and the other ones (mutators) will be way more limited

Finally maybe temptative bug fixed one of the main reason i didnt released sooner and support hosting a CTZ server for everyone
SeamlessTravel bug seems to be handled, and now you can switch map from a CTZ gamemode to another CTZ gamemode without breaking.

Still other things i need to iron out, like :

  • custom logging to the server, so i'm not supporting everyone host it CTZ yet, but at least i can confidently let OFFICIAL CTZ server running without having to babysit it.
  • Sometimes people keep their weapons/unlocks when a new round is started, i thought i fixed this one, i'll need to see it again / reproduce it, but it looks like it's very rare now

im a bit discouraged , trying to organize events, and seeing so few people show up.
So until Mod auto download is out, i'm not motivated to push it (not even sure it'll be enough, maybe when the playerbase grow a bit more)

It's such a shame too, mods is what got me interested in OHD and CTZ mod was something I was following literally since it appeared on the workshop.
Funnily enough, seeing the mod drove me to play some more koth, which, surprisingly (or not) still has full servers at peak time

Was busy IRL with planting crops in garden.
Back to CTZ to polish the seeding phase with bots. Will do playtest in a few week.
Wont push for Events / commu hosting servers until Mod Auto Download is implemented, and playerbase increase (will prob happen with Vehicles thx yoshi :D)

@cold shuttle Didn't really notice anything too bad to do with CTZ itself (i.e. ignoring glitches due to current state of the main-line game code released).

The GM seems to work, the HUD worked, no issue with the weapon selection, progression and spawning.
Did notice a problem when I picked up a dropped kit, the HUD didn't seem to update with the new kit - went a bit weird until I died.
