My attempts at recreating Ken Sugimori's old art style. While there's a lot to improve on, I think I made some decent progress.

Very cool!
Yoooooooooooo
while the lineart isn't perfect, it's still fairly solid. you definitely nailed the watercolor technique holy moly
Thank you. I use a G-pen for Dratini and Pikachu and for the rest a regular pen. I'll stick to the former though, as I think it leaves a stronger impact.
Holy shit what r these. That watercolor remind me gameboy pokemon art they look so good
for a second I genuinely thought these were legit Sugimori pieces
good job dude, you've won
Well the line work could be improved, but it's good to see you like those pictures anyway.
holy shit this is ink and water-colour?
Yes, with all it's limits regarding corrections.
First time drawing Sprigatito.
A slightly off model Venusaur, but it should still be fine here.
It was part of a contest, where I even made the second place.
Don't worry, the office Kakuna is an inside joke.
dang this is pretty on point
My only critique is that looks very MS PGothic. You may want to look for an FOT/Fontworks font that suits your needs
this is just me splitting hairs, but when i see those default fonts it's super obvious it's like using Arial lol
Yea I was gonna suggest like UD Kakugo 80C or another type of gothic bold font
Dude wanna pop in to say these are super freaking accurate omg
Thank you very much. It took some practice to get the water colours right, but I have to work at the line art more.
What do you think of my complete Diglett? A cursed potato? I was just experimenting.
the incomprehensible horrors of diglett above ground
Truly the scariest Pokémon design to exist.
I also always liked to assume they were stubby little mole adjacent creatures
Originally I wanted to give it smaller claws similar to Sandshrew, but given how simple it's design already is I thought that larger claws might leave a stronger impact.
While a bit more red than intended, I think it still looks decent.
lookin fire as always, nice job dude
god, I wish I could replicate the style digitally
Thank you very much. While I personally prefer to paint with actual watercolours, there are multiple ways to replicate the wet on wet gradient digitally. Krita and Magma are free art programs with such possibilities.
If you want I can start a session in Magma right now and show you how I do it.
Oh I love Krita!
It's very good for free software.
I bought clip studio and it's served me well
Clip Studio is a powerful software. You can use the soft watercolour brush to achieve those gradients.
My first commission. While it was challenging to draw at such a small size, I still had a lot of fun.
I got a new quill and I think my line art improved a bit.
i remember seeing some people talking avout the sugimori style and they mentioned how he apparently used alcohol in his works for the colours
and how there's black spots from where the alcohol dripped
Alcohol? I heard about some alcohol markers, but that's new to me.
Alcohol and watercolours iirc
I could give it a shot, even if it feels a bit weird.
Slowpoke tails are considered to be a delicacy.
This is SO cool, depending on the price I would absolutely love to buy a commission
I legit thought these were real for a second tbh
Thank you very much Richy. I would be happy if you'd commission me. The price will depend on the complexity of the Pokémon design, the amount of characters and if you want a background. We can talk about the details via DM.
Awesome! Are you okay with me sending a DM then?
Absolutely. Shipping is available too, but it can take a while and there's always a risk it gets damaged on the way.
do you take paypal for commissions? this stuff is genuinely so cool and I'd kill to get art in this style
Thank you very much. Paypal is fine, we can handle the details via DM.
Noted, I'll contact you once I have a solid art idea
It's Cubone again, this time with a sprite.
A change of pace, I see.
Fun fact. Some of the gen 1 Pokémon were created in pixel art first before getting watercolour art.
I did it the other way around, but maybe I should try pixel art before watercolours as well.
I think an example of this is that one of the very early mangas drew diglett with a mouth because there was no official art available outside of the red/green sprites.
My entry for the Chikorita collaboration.
hell yeaaa
And a Mew for June.
A childhood favourite: Charizard painted with ink and watercolors. A loose recreation of Arita's iconic depiction with several Sugimori drawings as additional inspiration. As a little extra a sprite within the limitations of the original Pokémon games.
for a second I thought that was a legit gen 1 sprite
fooled again I have been
nice lizardon
haven't been in here in a while
and I am STILL impressed
(the mew is super pretty)
Thanks for your responses, I have been working on a custom GBA sprite for Cubone. And as a bonus a rushed watercolour illustration.
What a chunky lad.
These are fantastic!!! Love the commitment to the medium a lot.
Thank you very much. While ink and watercolours don't allow many mistakes, I think the results are worth the hassle.
I can't do tradtional anymore but try to commit to mistakes regardless. Seeing your improvements from the first post to now is admirable and I hope to see mroe in te future, these are super good. I thought the Golduck one was one of those official cards even.
Today I'll show you some digital art, even if it's not entirely true to the threads title. To accompany the GBA sprite of Cubone, I redrew it digitally and while I was at it, Mega Victreebel was announced, so I had to draw it as well.
You think so? Thank you very much, that means a lot to me!
Does it look like crystal Onix to you? Maybe I should have used a different type of blue.
Charizard is a repost, but it would look odd to just have the first two stages on it's own, right?
Bro you gotta stop cooking we can't eat this much all at once
Sounds like you need to make room for a second course.
I gotta invest in a second stomach at this rate man
Damn, these actually look official, tf
I think my line work differs, but i try to improve it with each drawing.
honestly had I not known that you do these and I saw them in low enough quality (much like the official renders before they all got released) I could've been fooled xp
Happy Pokémon Day!
Damn, some of these could fool me if you told me they're official
Only some though. The line art needs to be cleaner and the colouring a lot more saturated. Time will tell if I can manage those issues.
