that's cool, but have you thought about real world implications ? Music isn't free, and licensing music to be played inside a game is complicated and costly. Unfortunately, I don't see this ever happening...
I could see it happening as a feature that would let you craft an 'audio tape' of any audio file you put in a specific directory. That puts the burden on the player, without requiring the game to license the media.
can't you just run winamp in the background or something?

Could be done. Some games do it this way because players like to be immersed, even with their own music.
It matters more to some people than others, and that's okay.
I guess so... in any case, it's not up to us. For the developers it's probably safer to just use the music they already licensed (and is present in the credits)
I mean, there's not a safety issue with media they aren't providing. A bunch of the GTA and Saints Row games did this, in the form of a car radio station that played user files.
