There should be a timer, but it's on the little box inside the bigger container. And it starts at 1 hour.
As for your Diesel problem: There's a reactor you can build that transforms biomass into Diesel. I have so much biomass that I wouldn't know what to do with it otherwise. Especially the one kind that those swimming / flying leeches drop. They are abundant.

I did the same thing because I thought the little timer was 60sec to get it into a pod. Filled up all the pods and lost them all after stopping for gas thinking there was no more time limit.
