Had Iphones for 10 years since like the Iphone 3 up to a 6s plus
and now I am running a Samsung Galaxy A40
from what I can tell is that Iphone did seem smoother
but that could also be because of me not buying a particular high end phone this time around

It's not a fair comparison imo, one is made specifically for a series of phones to adapt to a very specific ecosystem, hence very optimized and fluently mixed into Apple's ecosystem, other one is open source and is made to adapt in a horrendous amount of phones, I always prefer an Android as it allows you to get most out of your phone on your own terms too, I've worked on several custom ROMs in past and flashed my own phones with it, you can't do the same with iOS
