There's a duplicate system which essentially means you can only have one of each hero.
Rare, Epic and Legendary will give a soul which can be exchanged for artefacts of the same rarity, Legendary ones can also be used to inspire the same hero for added stats and skill effects.
There are also exclusive souls which can be exchanged with another legendary soul to get an artefact the the hero you got a duplicate of (Flora, Beldelle, Pzul for example)
All duplicates give an amount of Essence too which is used to upgrade the artefacts
