His battleskill states: "... and healing the ally with the currently lowest percentage of HP...". But while trying him in a speedrun he doesn't heal my frontman (Aschesius). Am I missing something or is his initial cast wrong?

looks like aschetius was already so close dead by the time the heals started targetting since there's a short delay between the fireballs hitting and the heal hitting that it defaulted to synarell because it wouldn't have healed anyone if it proceeded normally
if you switch him to a regular tank that behavior might change
From testing it appears that smart targetting uses a sort of prediction so it's likely the AI saw that he was dead already by the time the heal hits and decided not to heal him because of that.
