Theodore auto aim seems to require targeting an enemy, while manualky you can freeplace the hitbox.

Not sure if this helps. Stun (and hit) on the first line. Backrow within 3x3 box, but not hit due to none in the middle.
And when it's X shaped, hit is done on all 5
