What are some ways to hone my sense of danger other than by playing a lot?
Basically, it's just a skill you have to practice and develop while playing, but make sure you focus on trying to develop the skill and not just play without thinking. Maybe you already understand the concept, but the thing that defines whether you're "in danger" or not is map control and team vision. This means you need to be watching the minimap to see your teammates positions, see what vision they have, and deduce from that all of the places that the enemy could be. Just for example, on ascent defense if you have a teammate watching mid from market, you don't have to worry about someone walking out from link up to cat, but if that teammate isnt playing far up enough to see high mid, you need to be understanding that an enemy could potentially walk from high mid up to short without being seen. And, for example, if you were in short holding cat in that situation, you need to have your crosshair positioned for a peek from the enemy 100% of time (until you reposition or need to turn attention to a main or something).
To work on it in actual matches, focus on watching the minimap at all times that you know you are safe. i.e. the first 10 seconds or so of the round (as long as you arent peeking out lol) And then in addition, if you are holding an angle and want to check minimap, just pull away to the side of the angle for a bit, check the map, then move back to hold position. If you are running into a site and your teammates are in before you, take a second to check the map and you will see enemy positions that you cant see without the map because you have no direct line of sight. You'll find that the more you can look at your map, the more you will feel confident that you understand the situation and can make the best choices possible.
