Hello everyone, first time posting here. I've recently been working on my peeks and decision making in general, but I'm not sure what I need to prioritize specifically. Would love some thoughts and feedback. Thanks in advance 🙂

The vod is in japanese and I'm duo-ing with the sova. If you need translations of callouts etc., I will gladly help out.

I just finished watching it and here are some questions / things that went through my mind:

  • First of all, thank you for taking the time to VOD review me! I've been stuck in gold for a while now trying to improve but with little progress in terms of rank. Your detailed VOD review gave me new insights and highlighted my mistakes a lot more boldly than when I VOD reviewed myself.

  • You're completely right; I don't recognize that an enemy COULD BE there and expose myself often + peek really poorly. What are some ways to hone my sense of danger other than by playing a lot? Also, I think I peek a lot better in DM but I can't translate that in to ranked matches - that's one of the things I'm working on.

  • You pointing out the chain reaction of a bad choice in round 16 was extremely insightful. It made me feel motivated to make better decisions and be much more aware of say enemy utility usage.

  • Sorry for me and my duo goofing off in comms lmao.

Again, thanks for taking your time to VOD review ❤️

Glad you found it helpful!

Basically, it's just a skill you have to practice and develop while playing, but make sure you focus on trying to develop the skill and not just play without thinking. Maybe you already understand the concept, but the thing that defines whether you're "in danger" or not is map control and team vision. This means you need to be watching the minimap to see your teammates positions, see what vision they have, and deduce from that all of the places that the enemy could be. Just for example, on ascent defense if you have a teammate watching mid from market, you don't have to worry about someone walking out from link up to cat, but if that teammate isnt playing far up enough to see high mid, you need to be understanding that an enemy could potentially walk from high mid up to short without being seen. And, for example, if you were in short holding cat in that situation, you need to have your crosshair positioned for a peek from the enemy 100% of time (until you reposition or need to turn attention to a main or something).
To work on it in actual matches, focus on watching the minimap at all times that you know you are safe. i.e. the first 10 seconds or so of the round (as long as you arent peeking out lol) And then in addition, if you are holding an angle and want to check minimap, just pull away to the side of the angle for a bit, check the map, then move back to hold position. If you are running into a site and your teammates are in before you, take a second to check the map and you will see enemy positions that you cant see without the map because you have no direct line of sight. You'll find that the more you can look at your map, the more you will feel confident that you understand the situation and can make the best choices possible.

I'd be interested to see a game of DM from you just to see if thats true, because I feel like I might have advice but I would want to make sure that you really do have the basics down in DM before giving it.

Sorry for me and my duo goofing off in comms lmao.

all good lol

Some thoughts on DM and gun fights in general:

  • I play DM without a HUD and without sound. Playing it like this makes it less frustrating for me. I usually play some music while DMing.
  • I feel awkward all the time in DM; not sure where to go or where to keep my crosshair.
  • Recently started using the phantom again as you suggested - thought it made logical sense to do so because I've been shooting through smokes ALOT recently.
  • I play on a 60HZ monitor but recently bought a 144HZ one and it's arriving next week. Hoping that it changes something hoojCopium

Thanks again for reviewing my vods.

I know why diagonal peeking, shift peeking, bad crosshair placement is bad, but like you said, I don't think I've grinded enough DM to ingrain that idea in my brain and do it instinctively.

I've been binding W to knife and DMing and DM feels much better already. Also, I noticed that I should be holding my crosshair on an angle and getting close to it with W and then move my crosshair into the wall to pre-aim. I think I've been putting my crosshair at a wall, getting ready to pre-aim too early - focusing too much on pre-aiming (when I actually try to pre-aim during a match). Correct me if I'm wrong.

Also, do you have specific routes you take in DM? I'm sometimes hesitant to go to places like mid in ascent because I'm almost guaranteed to die. But it also feels weird to, for example, go from A main to A short, then peek B lobby, then go back to A site.
