Stalker 2 had a lot of expectations that people wanted to seen met. Throughout the years, modders have essentially took the old game and quite literally made an entire new game out of it.

And with the current modern modding scene (cough cough escape from tarkov but in stalker cough cough) it was going to be challenging to appease both newer and older fans of the stalker franchise.

And as a person who never player the trilogy and mostly watched it, I can say that Stalker 2… is a decently fun experience.

It still keeps its Original Stalker DNA for better and for worse. They’ve nailed the atmosphere and most times you just take in the moment of The Zone for a while. They’re amazing set pieces and overall they really got the design of the world on point.

Then you reach the halfway point… and it starts to fall apart. The story is… eh… The gunplay is fun at the start until you inevitably start fighting spongy monolith. The mutants are just annoying, repairing can be annoying, making money can be annoying…

Overall, there was plenty of potential of the game. But through the midpoint, you could definitely see the cracks showing that the devs DESPERATELY wanted to finish this game on their deadline.

TL;DR It’s a pretty good experience that falls short the longer you play it. I give it like a… 6.5/10

Just unpack the files into your ~mods folder. If you don't have that folder make one.

It will recognize the mod files in a folder structure but they can't be compressed folders.

Easier to just drop the individual files into ~mods.

general consensus is that the game is slowly improving but still has a long way to go

A-Life is basically the same as launch, but tweaked a bit. Open world encounters happen less frequently and they've made actors spawn a bit further out instead of 5meters away at your blind spots (yet this still tends to happen sometimes, idk why). They also seem to interact with the world more (like stalkers looting dead bodies and such), but it's still not nearly as good as it should be

Wait, it's in "early access" (no alife 2.0, broken ai, broken quests, unbalanced economy without mods, unbalanced game features without mods,...) with no roadmap for "1.0" in sight.

Should i buy Stalker 2 or wait? [as of march 27th 2025]
Stalker 2 got released on november 20th 2024, since then there have been 3 major updates, every one of those focusing on major quest bugs and glitches.
On release several main quests where extremelly bugged to the point of not being able to complete the Main Story Quest.
On top of that, several side quests where bugged with items not being able to be turned in or found for them, With some completely breaking like that one zalissya quest iykyk.
The 3 major updates have fixed MOST of these issues but several critical stuff remains, such as memory leak and bad performance.
The game also runs on 5.1 and some bad software lumen, vram usage is high so sub 8gb vram users beware.

In between the 3 major updates there have been "Hotfixes" i put them in quote since often these fixes don't come in hot, like the awaited 1.3.1 (see gsc answers coldfix)

A CRITICAL MISSING FEATURE STILL IS A-LIFE 2.0 BEING ABSENT, INSTEAD RESEMBLING SOMETHING AKIN TO A FAR CRY SPAWNER/SKYRIM AI.
Albeit the devs have said this is one of the main priorities: we have seen little change in that regard since release 4 months ago.
We also don't really know what the vision is for this a-life 2.0 and the extend of it being broken (modders believe its beyond fucked, devman says dont worry)

To add a cherry on top: there is NO roadmap info (last mention of it was 2 months ago in gsc answers saying "its still being cooked"
There is NO SDK info, NO proper info on the state of a-life 2.0, how it will end up, the ai is broken and dumb, the balance without mods is not there, and a list of other annoying things.

For above reasons i a mod author for this games a-life 2.0 system and several other stalker 2 mod authors and players STRONGLY advice any player to wait it out if they can.
Not only will the game be cheaper in the long run, you can also closely follow development and perhaps updated versions of this comment to see progress.
Right now what is there is a skeleton of what it can be, it can be better but we aren't sure how long it will take and how the finished result will be compared to the foundational elements of this series we all love.

Hi Kel, if my mod as you say makes no difference, then you have some conflict with other mods. I don't have to, but I have taken the time to do a bit of research, something everyone should do before installing something and compromising their save game or worse.

• The Desolation mod has not been updated to version 1.3 and is an overhaul that modifies many different files.
• OXA - Oxide's eXpanded Armory. You can use it, it's OK, they keep it updated and with active support in their thread. It doesn't interfere with my mod ‘Maklane's Better Gunfights’.
• Unrestricted Upgrades - NOT UPDATED FOR MONTHS.
• Dynamic Weather Overhaul - You can use it, it's OK. Another great modder keeping his work up to date and with active support in his thread.

Also, my Better Gunfights mod pairs very well with Shay's and LetsWoolGather's mods.

On another note, check your mods folder, especially if you've used Vortex at some point to install Stalker 2 mods.

The problem is the Engine. They will probably "Eventually" come up with a solution that mimics the alife system but I honestly don't think we will ever get a comparable version in UE5.
