I had always wondered why the Annex’s frontal 76 mm gun sometimes appeared damaged even when it hadn’t been hit by enemy fire. I recently observed the cause.
The Annex launched an IRM-S2 missile at a target, and immediately after launch the missile struck the 76 mm gun mounted in front of it. What happened was that the IRM-S2 launcher turret, positioned behind the gun, fired while the target was located directly behind the 76 mm turret relative to the launcher. As a result, the missile’s initial flight path intersected with the gun, causing it to collide with the 76 mm almost immediately after launch.
In short, the damage was not caused by enemy fire but by the ship’s own missile launcher firing at a target positioned behind the forward gun, leading to a self-inflicted impact.
