Basically, effects from the heat of moving fast in the atmosphere and re-entry effects. this will allow visual identification of otherwise invisible missiles from a great altitude.

For them to be this striking I think it needs to be dawn. Still a dark sky, but the sun lighting the smoke because they are so high already. Just compare twilight falcon 9 launch to an average one.

Still, if the game were able to recreate such conditions that would be really nice.
