When I finished the game, I went back to my last save from Polar Island to see how events would play out if I did not leave Zoë behind, since it seems it made me skip Journal entries. This save was made somewhere after that gate where you can leave her behind, but it seems that point acted as checkpoint, because I indeed ended up right there when loading the game. However, the contents of the savegame seems pretty broken:

  • I'm just outside the door, and yet the next part is already solved; the rocks to the north are already demolished [Edit: The bulldozer moving to destroy the rocks seems to trigger from the moment the savegame loads, so they get demolished after a while]
  • Zoë does not come when I open the gate. [Edit: This only happens if the bulldozer passed the gate already]
  • When I go to Zoë, either by opening the door or by jumping over the wall back into the previous area where Zoë is, it triggers her dialogue, she goes into the cabin, squashes the two clones, but doesn't come out of the crane after I ride the platform.
  • When I backtrack to the start of the level, the gate there is open, allowing me to walk out of the normal level bounds.

The odd thing is, sometimes Zoë isn't at the other side of the wall, and sometimes she is. When I opened the gate after I confirmed she wasn't, she just spawned and joined me normally.

I managed to pinpoint the issue. When the savegame loads, the bulldozer at the end of that part somehow acts as if Twinsen just entered it, and makes its way down to the rocks to destroy them. If you open the door before the bulldozer passes it, Zoë comes out normally, and everything works. If you wait until the bulldozer gets close to the door, Zoë spawns behind the door, and her scripting breaks.

3: Even if I jump back over the wall towards the previous area instead of opening the door (glitchy but possible), there's no way to go through the sequence without the bulldozer doing its thing in the meantime, and again, Zoë never comes out of the cabin, and never reappears.

Note, I have no idea if the savegame was made just after the gate, or after I went into the bulldozer. So either it saved the bulldozer state, or it erroneously triggers the bulldozer on all savegames at this point.

I had some bugs with Polar Island too. Seems I got just one try to use the moving lift, screwed it up, the wooden gate was stuck shut, Zoe didn't come forward, I could only jump over the wooden gate through some jumps that probably should not be possible.

This happened to me as well, I reported before but not as details as this one. Nice caught.
I did notice the bulldozer was not in-place anymore after loading the save game, and I was able to go to the next scene without it.
I haven't seen zoe on that instance.

I just confirmed it, yes:

  • Loading any savegame of Polar Island unlocks the starting door
  • Loading any savegame from behind the gate will start the bulldozer.

And if you're fast enough to open the door and get Zoë back, she still vanishes at the plushie because she won't have hopped into the bulldozer. Though it doesn't matter much, otherwise she vanishes into the prison at the top, and it didn't seem like she popped back out of that.
