If you can not update, do a fresh reinstall of the launcher

i did a fresh install it puts me to 1.7.8 again, and then i get the same issue when trying to update

If you currently can't open launcher, I'd suggest trying a fresh install again. And when you run launcher make sure it is ran as admin

should i not update then from 1.7.8?

i have done so many times over, i work in IT so i know atleast a bit what im doing, but i just cant update to 1.8.1 without the client failing me

I'd say keep trying, if you work in IT then your probably better at figuring out the issue then me. I'm just a volunteer who reads others issues and how they were solved then suggest that to others if similar.
