Can Discord be set to give a one-line message in the channel when somebody responds in a thread?
Looks like starting a thread is the safest way to make sure posts will pass unnoticed.
I'd like more Rocketchat-like behavior.

I'm not sure if discord supports rocketchat-like threads, I think they are going for more slack-like threads. Worst case, you can check on threads by clicking on the # symbol in the top bar

It's just that if an extra click is needed, less people will know about the thread and even less will join. Takeaway is (if you want more ppl to get involved in a discussion) to write in the main thread + contribute to chaos.
