Either I don't understand this, or something changed in the latest playtest version launched today.
I bought 4 blocks of 20kg bait, and I have 4 buckets of 500 hooks each.
I could apply bait to only two buckets.
Granted I have only played the game actively for three days, but I don't recall bait being consumed this fast.

Yes. I had 4 blocks after purchase.
Went to the boat, applied bait to one bucket, then I am left with 1 block.

I noticed the same thing when buying bait for my 4 buckets of 2500 hooks. Think they have up'ed the amount needed, but couldn't see anything in the patch notes.

@narrow cloud I agree with you that the bait consumption has increased. Yesterday I wanted to send this error via the in-game form, but it was impossible to send the report.

I think it was increased in V.0.8.2.
Was almost no limit how much You could bait with one bag before.
I mean You need one big 20kg bag to bait 1000 hooks.
So one 10kg for 500 hooks.

Found this when searching for 'real world' answers.
"A 500-hook longline would require approximately 10 kg to 15 kg of bait, assuming a bait size of 10-15 grams per hook, though the exact amount varies significantly depending on bait type, hook size, and target species."
So they probably have made some adjustments, but would be nice to get the official word.

Tested now, and I use one 20kg bag of bait for each 1000 hook buckets.
Have been this amount for a while.

Not sure if that is a real fix. I'm playing on the publictest branch, started new game, after I collected some money, I bought a tier 2 fishing ship, 10 pieces of 2500 hook fishinglines and 100 pieces of 20kg bait (of each kind) and I could only fill up like 1-2 buckets with 100 pieces of 20kg bait. I tried buying only 6 and that filled up 2 buckets aswell. I think there is a bug, that can cause any amount of bait to disappear after you filled a bucket with it.

That must be a bug or something.
I just used my saves from V.0.8.2.1418 when I chose the new Public_Test V.0.8.3, and it works fine here.

As a test I bought 150x 20kg bags of shrimp! I assigned the shrimp bait to the boat, then I asked a crew member to bait the hooks via the crew menu, they only did one bucket and the rest of the bait was then missing.

there is a bug on salmon farm i have sink my nordland in, searching a mooring place. after some try i found one maybe two. the boat sink cause of the thurster lateral with no power but it was lika rock. im sure if i make it on rost pier it wont arrive.. and the bait cost so much is delirious, for me crab and maquerel on tier3. ver 8.2 from august no new start game.

Yes. there is definatley something wrong with bait and consumpion when using it on longlines. I bought 100 20kg Mackerel bait and it ate 90 just doing one bucket of 2500 hooks. I was able to do 1/5 of another bucket with what I had left. I ran back and this time only bought 10 20kg bait. Then I was albe to do an entire bucket of 2500 hooks with only those 10 suddenly! Something is not adding up.

Can confirm this problem aswell... Me and a buddy did multiplayer, bought 4 20kg bags to bait 4 500hook lines, and could only bait 2 of the 4 buckets and the rest of the bags disapared. 4 buckets should use 2 20kg bags. So there is a bug there that makes the rest of the bags u have in your inventory dissapare.
