It's a feedback loop. Nintendo releases a product with games people want to preserve, people learn how to pull the game data off the media source to archive the game (cartridge era). Nintendo gets mad about that, then adds encryption or some kind of copyright protection to the device reading the media, archivists figure out they can read the data directly from the optical system as it's being decrypted (gamecube, wii, wii u). Nintendo gets mad about that, so the Switch has a "phone home" feature that tattles when tampered with. Tinkerers learn that the SOC has a hardware vulnerability accessible through shorting out a few pins in the joy con connector, which allows them to inject their own code and dump game cartridge content to an SD card.

All this because they know that once Nintendo, Sony, EA, Ubisoft, or whoever releases a game under their brand will inevitably make it so that either A.) the game is no longer purchasable, or B.) the game is no longer downloadable since most of the game cards or disks don't contain the entirety of the game anymore.

If purchasing isn't owning, what's the point in buying a game?

preserve games sure but so many were buying switch 1 from year one to be able to pirate to get them free when physical carts existed and all that was talked about online was them bragging about stealing games weeks early and some emu selling patches for them to run better which was really bad. I dont like they got to this point but people ruined it. as of rn pokopia is the first nintendo game that will be lost to time since its getting game key carded for some reason otherwise nintendo games were never in risk like EA Sony or Ubisoft since some ps or xbox disc dont contain all game data

i do know they never liked preserving but i cant blame them when anytime i see something about a switch 1 game online its someone with hours of gameplay bc they got the game 2 weeks early and dumping it online for others to play it early

oh kirby i think also is technically part of it since the game data is on the cart but the day 1 patch is needed to play the game

not sure how playable it is without it since we dont have it yet but i was gonna try when i get it

Yeah, imo, preservation has shades of grey. When the console is brand new and the games are still being sold is when I think archivists and game preservationists should be purchasing stock and sitting on the data until the next console is released or the game is no longer being sold. I still remain that when someone purchases something, they should have the right to own the product, and thus, do whatever they'd like to it so long as it doesn't infringe the copyright and IP of the manufacturer/brand.

Like, I own a Switch, if I want to short the pins to dump BoTW (which I have to own to do) to SD so I can play it on my desktop PC, that should be within my rights, and Nintendo should have no say in that. But, if I were to redistribute the ROM, I feel that crosses the line because BoTW is still being sold in stores (at full price, no less... not happy about that), and still is playable on the Switch and Switch 2.

Now, if Nintendo releases the next console which works "Digitally Only" or with disks again, and move away from the cartridges, then de-list all Switch games from retail stores, then I feel it should move towards public domain

It's all dependent on Nintendo to keep the game library server alive. To their credit, they did keep the DS game store open for several years after the Switch came out. Now, it's not clear if they'll be porting those to the Switch E-shop or the Arcade, but I'm hoping the Switch game servers will stay alive for a while, especially if the Stop Killing Games movement gets some legislation passed in multiple countries

I’m glad Loftia is third person. I’m fine with those. Even though jumping with the glider will scare me for awhile. I got used to using the glider in Palia. So Loftia should be the same.

There were different color choices for the buildings, thought since we're making diff houses lets make em like different "factions" and personalities so I did. Also made sure every part of it logically makes sense if you were to live there-

Green fisherman, Red archer, Blue spellcasters (retired), Purple sisters, Orange traders

Its subtle, but there are little stories in the details too you'll see it when you pay attention~~

I turn one into gems, but what can I do with them?

And why are they expiring?

I think only special cards like summer & winter ones (like the ones you pick up for free as a promotion during sale) expire within a month (?) beyond the sale. but this is old info so I'm not 100% if there's more to it now.

it's really just flavour for people who like to collect sets. but you can trade them for a tiny value, for whatever that's worth to you.

This year I wanted to learn Jgl so I had one year of Tali jgl (also because carpal tunnel issue).
And now, I am more playing Janna on Support but I wish for 2026 to come back on Mid. c:
(One Chall friend told me Janna can have potential to be played as mid sooo I think I will manage to get her Mid too xD)

But for Taliyah I just play her everywhere

I got acnl yesterday and diamond/pearl ogs! now i have my islands, ww, and nl going XD islands are less important to me to check daily though cause it's so much easier to get stuff and villagers don't leave without express permission unlike the older games. and dia/pearl brings me a step closer to recouping my game collection!!!
animal crossing og, city folk, and Dōbutsu no Mori are coming in the mail probably next week.

but i wasn't sure about acnl at first cause the listing on amazon said new, sealed international and there were a bunch of good reviews but the box notes UAE, Malaysia, Singapore, and Saudi Arabia on it so i was concerned before testing but it does work. the comment section for that listing makes me laugh. so many are comparing it to the other games and giving it low ratings when, I think, the rating should be based on the physical quality and whether the game works at all because those low reviews based on whether they liked the game hurts the seller, wrongly.

Very slow game plat is slow but not as slow and I think the dex had 2 fire types. They did some balancing and such too but mainly the new content was the selling point
