I have created a plane with a custom shape and then applied a solidify modifier to extrude it. If I then apply smooth shade then the mesh gets distorted, I don't understand why.

whats the mesh like?

in wireframe

hmmmm

sudden wraith
#

the small squares are other objects

#

you can ignore them

pine echo
#

idk what’s causing it then

#

it could be because it’s a purely flat objects

sudden wraith
#

weird isn't it

pine echo
#

it’s trying to smooth something sharp

#

make ad like

#

a slight bevel modifier

sudden wraith
#

if I apply a bevel mod then nothing happens, I mean I can't see any bevel

pine echo
#

wow

sudden wraith
#

oh hold on

pine echo
#

uh

#

idk then

sudden wraith
#

now it's applying the bevel

#

let me try to smooth

pine echo
#

ah mk

sudden wraith
#

it worked 🙂

pine echo
#

yay!

sudden wraith
#

I didn't think about the sharp edge

#

it was a recurrent problem

#

thank you for the help!

The reasons I think your mesh got distorted are:

  1. The top face is a multi-sided polygon. Generally try to make it all quads. For this mesh ig you could try deleting the top face and using Gridfill to get Quad faces.
  2. You haven't checked Auto-Smooth. It is under object data properties > normals > Auto-smooth.

Good suggestions I never used gridfill is it an add on?
