It really depends if you are going to rig it or not. If you are going to rig it, then using a mirror modifier is really easy, since then you can model the rig so its more perfect!

Also remember to make the character in a t-pose

not sadly. It doesnt matter how you learn something. The fact is, you took the time to learn it and YOU made that character. Take the credit for it, you've done a great job. Because now you can make 100 of these all with a unique look.
