I made a mistake by duplicating in edit mode, so its all 1 object and now when I duplicate it's the whole thing, but I only want this to be duplicated

Shift + D
that'll separate your selection into a separate object, that you can then duplicate around.

👌 and hover over the duplicate part and press L to easily select the loose part. Useful if you want to delete an accidentally duplicated object
