Will Buxton interviews Angelo Rosin trackside!
Will Buxton: Angelo, what a moment for Prema Racing! Your first-ever Formula 1 practice session, and you're already turning heads. P7 and P8 with two rookie drivers, Théo Pourchaire and Oliver Bearman. How does that feel?
Angelo Rosin: Will, it feels incredible. We always knew this moment would come, but seeing it actually happen, and with such a strong performance right out of the box, it's truly special. P7 and P8 is beyond what we could have hoped for in our first session, especially with two rookies.
Will Buxton: Exactly, two rookies! Pourchaire and Bearman have shown a lot of promise in the junior categories, but to be this quick right away in F1 is something else. What’s your take on how they've adapted?
Angelo Rosin: Both Théo and Oliver have done an exceptional job. They're quick learners, and their work ethic is unbelievable. Théo brings that bit of extra experience from Formula 2, and Oliver, being so young, has shown maturity beyond his years. We prepared them well, but to come into a Formula 1 weekend and be competitive so soon is a testament to their talent and their commitment.
Will Buxton: Speaking of preparation, Prema has such a strong history in the junior categories. Did that experience help you adapt as a team for this leap into Formula 1?
Angelo Rosin: Absolutely. Our success in F2 and F3 gave us a strong foundation, not just in terms of developing drivers but also in terms of building a team culture focused on attention to detail. Moving up to F1 required adjustments, but we’ve always believed in our methods and our approach. Of course, the competition here is fierce, but our junior success has definitely helped us hit the ground running.
Will Buxton: The competition is certainly fierce. Being in P7 and P8 in your first practice session is an outstanding result. Do you think Prema can maintain this kind of pace as the weekend progresses?
Angelo Rosin: It's still early, and there’s a lot of work ahead. The top teams have the resources and experience to find more speed, so we’re aware that it won’t be easy to stay up there. But today showed that we have a strong car and two capable drivers. If we keep our focus and continue to improve, I think we can be competitive throughout the weekend.
Will Buxton: Tell us a bit more about the two drivers. Pourchaire, at just 20 years old, has been highly rated for some time, and Bearman, even younger at 19, is one of the most exciting young talents coming through. What makes them such a good fit for Prema, especially at this level?
Angelo Rosin: Théo and Oliver are both driven and fearless, but they have different strengths. Théo is very methodical and brings a calm, calculated approach to racing. He doesn’t let pressure get to him, which is crucial at this level. Oliver, on the other hand, is incredibly instinctive. His raw pace is phenomenal, and he has a natural racing intelligence that allows him to read situations well even as a rookie. Together, they bring a great balance to the team.
