Hello !

I have a question about Dash I/O and whether you can look the top deck or not before cranking an item when played from top deck.
I know there is a priority window when you play the item, and thus it allows you to look at the top deck

But Dash I/O release note is saying explicitely that you can't look :
"- If you play the top card of your deck, you may not look at the next top card of your deck until you have finished playing the card. I.e. you cannot use information about the next card to determine how you want to play the card.

  • If you resolve an effect that changes the top card of your deck, you may not look at the next top card of your deck until you have finished resolving the entire layer of the effect. I.e. you cannot use information about the next card to determine how to resolve the remainder of the effects."

And this article http://fabtcg.com/articles/back-alley-oracle-12-tokens-triggers-and-tardiness/ is also speaking about the intention behind the interaction in the following terms :
"The situation we want to avoid with this ability is allowing players to see the second top card of their deck when an effect is incomplete and using that information to inform future decisions of the effect, such as when halfway through playing a card, resolving an effect, or even when shuffling"

And all this confuses me...
I can't find anywhere when Dash I/O release note was overruled... Do you have an idea ?

With Bright Lights and Round the Table come quite a lot of new mechanics and interactions, and we have taken the time to explore how these are integrated into our comprehensive rules. We've also made updates to our rules and policy regarding tokens, triggers, looking at cards with Dash I/O, phantasm, Ultimate Pit Fight, andContinue reading "Back...

so the release notes and back alley oracle specify that the DIO player can't look at the top card in the middle of resolving an effect

#

but playing an item off the top and then looking at the top card while it's on the stack isn't in the middle of resolving an effect, there is a priority window where dio can freely look at the card

#

the relevant rule is

8.5.11d If look is a continuous effect and the object is specified by a location, the object the player may look at are determined as a game state action. If the object a player may look at changes due to a rule or effect, the player may not look at that new object until any player would gain priority.

The back alley article puts this example :

"Tyler is playing as Dash I/O. Tyler looks at the top of their deck, which is a Mechanologist item with cost 1, and decides to play it. First, they announce the card by putting it onto the stack. Because the top card of Tyler’s deck has changed but no player has gained priority yet, Tyler may not look at the new top card of their deck. Second, Tyler chooses any targets, modes, etc.) and pays any costs. Finally, the card is considered played, Tyler regains priority, and may now look at the new top card of their deck."

I guess I interpreted wrong... Crank isn't an additionnal cost indeed... The wording of the example mislead me

yes, tyler cannot look at the top card while playing the card

#

for example deciding which card to pitch based on what is the card under the item they're playing from the top

#

but as you said crank happens later

so according to you
When Dash IO release note says :
" If you play the top card of your deck, you may not look at the next top card of your deck until you have finished playing the card. I.e. you cannot use information about the next card to determine how you want to play the card.".

the crank isn't included between " If you play the top card" and "until you have finished playing the card"

Damn... this sentence is badly written 😄

That's because cranking happens as part of resolving the played card. Not playing the card itself

#

The main 2 moments you stop Dio from looking is. Before they have paid and during spark of genius, where they won't know what they will draw before having to decide on cranking.

Cranking is as it enters the arena, and thus is why you can’t look while resolving spark and deciding to crank the sparked item
