Case: Opp has ward 1 and merciful retribution. I played an unpreventable card. Will merciful retribution trigger?

I'm just confused with the wording of ward since it says* "prevent 1 and destroy"*. Now since my card is unpreventable, does that negate the "prevent" effect of a ward and since the ward is prevented, it is not considered "destroyed" and the effect of retribution will not take place?

When ward sees any damage event it does 2 things, it destroys itself and it prevents damage. It does not need to prevent the damage to destroy itself. Unpreventable damage will end up with all objects with ward destroyed and no damage prevented
