Once again: this is not the first event, the game has always been running, there have never been any problems.

The Christmas event and the lunar new year event were separate batches of content added to the game. Upcoming events have only been added to the game shortly before this one here went live. Additionally there have been problems with this event that needed to be fixed, but that all happened during the first day of the event (January 27th). Steam got this update first and the Google play store + iOS store got it a little later - but still the same day I believe.
The way that shamahan has implemented these new weekly tasks aka. Events is using new coding what therefore brought new bugs with it. Some other players also reported that instead of this event, the one before that repeated for them instead. Most of the bugs regarding this should be fixed now, so if for some reason this event has only appeared for you now, the upcoming ones should be more stable.
After this event there will be a one week break and events will continue after that. There's a list for estimates times of events in #🚧upcoming-updates - also note that events start on Fridays (server time), not Mondays.

The event was added in a recent update which was released a few days before the holiday event started. It's unfortunate that you didn't get the update before the event started but there is always the next event
