I’ve been trying to mix together some songs recently, but I’ve found this version of audacity to be pretty unstable. it feels like if you so much as look at this program the wrong way it crashes. luckily I haven’t lost any data from the crashes, as every time i reboot and recover the files it takes me back instantly to where I was before it crashed.
yesterday I found that doing some more technical things, like trying to put effects on a track while the song is playing, seem to overwhelm the app and cause it to crash—which is an easy enough fix as I can just pause the song. really, try to edit audio in any way while a track is playing and you’re rolling the dice with a 1/3 chance of a crash. however, just now I’ve run into a new issue which is that I can’t even open certain menu boxes without the app getting mad at me and crashing. even when there’s no playback, I can’t even save a musefx preset without the app throwing a temper tantrum. it seems the crashes have been growing more and more frequent.
the projects I’m working on have around ten tracks, which might potentially be the source of the issue I don’t know if audacity just doesn’t like working with a lot of tracks at once, but the projects are all pretty short at only a few minutes long. I’ve done some research and found that this type of nonstop crashing is common with large project files, but a project with half a dozen tracks at four minutes long doesn’t seem that big to me.
oh and very ironically, the crash reports also won’t even send, so I can’t even help audacity with the data to fix these bugs. in case anyone was curious, the most common crash reason listed seems to be “EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION_READ”. my PC has fairly adequate specs, good enough to run most modern video games. if anyone could offer and advice and help with this it would be greatly appreciated, and if not any recommendations on alternatives to audacity would be appreciated. thanks
